Right here goes!! 195 is the distance accross the tread of the tyre (19.5 cm's is the bit that touches the road)
eg 195/50/15
Then the 50 is the length of the sidewall (5cm's) and the 15 is the size of your alloy,(15") Hope this jibberish helps!!!!!

205 will rub like buggery, so go for 195's,and even then they might rub without arch work...depends on car, and tyre brand.
45 profiles are the best, i.e 195-45-15s

i thought the 50 or 45 in 195/50/15 was the percentage of the width of the tyre...

I have 195/50/15 yokohama's and they rub a bit on the drivers side and the other side if I screw it round a rounabout.

I have 185/55/15. As far as I am and concerned, and many others, this is the optimum tyre size. There is no scrubage, but more importantly it is the best surface area for the weight of the car. Any wider and you dont have enough weight per cm. The only exception would be cars with heavier engines such as valvers.

True MC...very true, but there's not a lot in it really, and my 195-45-15 are a heck of a lot more grippy than my old 175-64-14s were. Maybe 185-55-15 would be even better, but I'm not going to change my tyres to try it! ;)

It depends on the tyre brand as well though, 'cos you could have 185-55-15's with less grip than 165-64-14's, if they are a crappy compound, and the thinner tyres were decent stuff.

The 45 profiles will also have a much harder/stiffer side wall...I know mine do...which helps cornering a huge amount
