I would like to clean my sr engine and get the bottom of the engine black/silver and the head/rocker cover in silver. What paint should i use and where do i get it?
When i am putting new spark plugs and leads on, how do i know what order they go in? if i buy brand new leads will they tell me what plug to put them onto or can you tell by the length of the leads? (this may be a silly question)lol
I would like to paint inside the arches but want underseal stuff on them and to protect my new splash guards. What paint/underseal should i put on? where do i get that? Also do i brush it on or spray it with a spray gun or will i need a special underseal spray gun?
Thanks
Greg
Just replace one ht lead at a time.
You can just brush underseal/waxoyl on, all motor factors sell it.
As for the engine, use a wire brush to remove corrosion/dirt etc, then just paint it with hammerite.

my friend just ripped the leads off the sr engine and i didnt think to mark what one was what? if i get a new set how will i know what lead goes where or do i shove any lead onto any plug? i dont know what order they go on, on the dizzy or the plugs? is there anyway to find out or put them on? Surely someone will know a order or what to do?
Do i not have to have a special kind of paint that will take lots of heat? I will probably pressure wash the engine with gunk , then wire brush it and get it rubbed down then paint it with hammerite. Is it ok to do the whole engine/box with hammerite?
My block and head/cam housing is done in hammerite, been fine.
The leads go on, 1,2,3,4 from the Timing Belt end.
And 1,3,4,2 in a anti clockwise direction on the dizzy cap.

Get the brush-on version of gunk, work it in well and leave it to do it's stuff for 10mins. It should rinse off well enough with just a hosepipe. Hammerite or proper engine lacquer will do the job next, I've just used normal cheapo silver spray on my head and gearbox, the paint on the head has lasted a year so far without burning off.

Greg
I think mikey just used normal silver spray paint, that you get from motor factors etc.
I used brush on hammerite on my block and head.
Heres my attempt, personally i prefer the head etc just super clean bare metal, but i got bored trying to clean it so just painted it,Lol.

Yes I have painted the mounts since I took that pic, lol. LLTN's right, I just used some aluminium spray paint from the local mo-fo's, with some black hammerite smooth brushed-on for the block.
Engine all back together,

i have washed the gearbox and then scrubbed it with a wire brush then primed it today with cheap paint from motor factors. Only 95p per can! I will spray it silver tommorow with the final coat.
My dad is going to get me more cheap rattle cans for the head and rocker cover tommorow. I presume the cheap silver paint will be fine and wont burn off for a while. Is there a chance the paint could go on fire? My dad says it will probably stink when the engine gets really hot. Is this true?
I will get brush on hammerite black for the block tommorow aswell. Hope the brush on hammerite or tin of paint i get will do he job fine and not burn off. I am painting the gear linkages and engine mounts etc aswell.

easier way than using a manual wire brush is to get one of them circular wire brushes that attach to a drill. works a treat.
Im painting my block and head with silver hammerite

If you've got the surface clean enough I doubt it'll burn off. The head and 'box dont get anywhere near as hot as the exhaust. For example, the paint I used on the block hasn't been bothered by the temp that gets up to, but when I used it on my repair to the down pipe it only took a few minutes of running to burn it off completely.

will probably just end up putting the heat wrap stuff on my manifold/downpipe. makes it look alot cooler than a rusty old pipe!
The paint does smell for quite a few miles till it "burns" in.
You might get some smoke too,i did when i first started mine,Lol.

I painted the block on mine with some of that Halfords engine lacquer, but quite honestly I reckon hammeite prob gives a better finish! I did my cam-cover with standard spray paint and that has been fine. :thumb:

didn't get any funny smells off mine, painted the engine about 2 months before it was put back together and started up so the paint had plenty of time to harden up.
I started mine up 1hr after painting, that may explain it,Lol.

well thats the engine been completly stripped down and i have spent 6 hours in total cleaning it and getting rid of the dirt and grime! So about half an hour ago i gave it a coat of grey primer all over the engine and the gearbox, engine mounts and odd wee things. Looks alot better already. I will get rid of the odd bit of dirt i have missed tommorow night and then give it a final coat with hammerite.
Cheers for your help guys! Much appreciated.:thumb:
