steering column/rack help please

after a failed theft attempt on my nova it appears the little scrotes have well and truly fooked my steering, the steering wheel is just spinning freely (not moving the wheels at all) so im just wondering what needs to be replaced?

and also would it be best to do this work whilst the engine is out of the shell?(c20xe conversion coming soon)

the column will have sheared, or the rubber donut at the bottom of it. Take the front parcel shelf out and get your head under there while turning the wheel, you'll be able to see what isnt moving then.
