Thought it was time i got mine banged up in the Projects section as i doubt it will ever be 100% finished,Lol.

Anyways.

Bought the car in June 2005, back then it was std apart from Koni suspension, delocked doors, smoothed wings, and the SR steelies.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v86/Nova-crew/Nova%20WIP%20pics/2.jpg

Got busy cleaning her and back to blacking the bumpers:-
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v86/Nova-crew/Nova%20WIP%20pics/3.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v86/Nova-crew/Nova%20WIP%20pics/4.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v86/Nova-crew/Nova%20WIP%20pics/5.jpg
Also shoved the obligatory K&N on:-
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v86/Nova-crew/Nova%20WIP%20pics/6.jpg

Then i remembered that i had a set of 16" Masitaly rims lying about in my shed(off my old mk3 astra), they looked quite well-
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v86/Nova-crew/Nova%20WIP%20pics/7.jpg
But being 7J width and a low offset they stuck out from the front arches, and wouldn't fit the rear at all, not without mods, and i didn't want to do that:-
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v86/Nova-crew/Nova%20WIP%20pics/8.jpg

So that was that idea gone.

July 05-I soon got tired of having to polish the bumpers about every week to keep them black so decided spray them matt black, also did the boot grab handle, came out quite well
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v86/Nova-crew/Nova%20WIP%20pics/9.jpg

Aug 05-Having recently sold the masitaly wheels by this point i put that cash towards a nice set of well fitting 15s, when i spotted a set of Vauxhall Cav cesaro wheels(best vaux wheels imo) for sale on Mig, so i snapped them on, and got them fitted:-
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v86/Nova-crew/Nova%20WIP%20pics/11-Cesaros.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v86/Nova-crew/Nova%20WIP%20pics/12.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v86/Nova-crew/Nova%20WIP%20pics/13.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v86/Nova-crew/Nova%20WIP%20pics/14.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v86/Nova-crew/Nova%20WIP%20pics/16.jpg

With it getting more towards Winter i bought a full set of GM mudflaps to prevent stone chips etc, look quite well
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v86/Nova-crew/Nova%20WIP%20pics/18-flaps.jpg

The car then stayed like this for about 2months,Lol, till i spotted a nice ashley exhaust system on the bay, and a cheap 4-1 manifold.
They soon arrived and were painted up, the 4-1 was then fitted with a heated lambda sensor:-
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v86/Nova-crew/Nova%20WIP%20pics/19-4branch.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v86/Nova-crew/Nova%20WIP%20pics/20-Ashley.jpg
But being for a mk1 bumper, the backbox hangs slightly too low for a mk2, oh well

Jan 06-
By now the front brakes were quite worn and needed replacing, so i took this oppourtunity to get some 2L 16v stuff.
The calipers were cleaned and hammerited Silver:-
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v86/Nova-crew/Nova%20WIP%20pics/22-2Lbrakes.jpg
And then fitted right on, much better :D
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v86/Nova-crew/Nova%20WIP%20pics/23-Brakesfitted.jpg

Whilst the weather was quite cold(Feb 06) i picked up a gsi rear spoiler, off Will on here iirc. That was sanded down, primed and sprayed with cans, and then G3'd, the finish was quite good for rattle cans:-
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v86/Nova-crew/Nova%20WIP%20pics/24-Gsispoilersprayed.jpg

Using Nicks guide i then had the job of drilling 8 holes in my boot lid, turned out to be easier that i first thought, once i found metal drill bit to use and not a wood one,Lmao.
So that went on:-
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v86/Nova-crew/Nova%20WIP%20pics/25-Gsispoilerfitted.jpg

March 06-A trip to the scrappy saw a set of rear headrests fitted:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v86/Nova-crew/Nova%20WIP%20pics/25-Mar06-Rearheadrests.jpg

I also bought a set of gsi 6dial clocks and Sri clocks, to make a gsi/sri hybrid(white dials, but oil/batt guages too) Like so
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v86/Nova-crew/Nova%20WIP%20pics/26-SriGsiclocks.jpg

March 06-Saw a front OMP brace for sale right here on Novaload, so snapped that up and fitted it, needed a few mods to miss a few engine sensors(with it being for a SR model, but went on fine)
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v86/Nova-crew/Nova%20WIP%20pics/27-Strutbrace.jpg

April 06-By now i was getting a bit bored with matt black, so a gsi front bumper was found, i couldn't decide whether keep it white, but i finally decided on Grey, looks better imo:-
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v86/Nova-crew/Nova%20WIP%20pics/28-Gsifront.jpg
Rear bumper was removed, and sprayed with filler primer to fill the "blobs"
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v86/Nova-crew/Nova%20WIP%20pics/29-Primedrear.jpg

After many nights of spraying and laquering, they were finally ready
Grab handle got the spraying grey treatment too.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v86/Nova-crew/Nova%20WIP%20pics/30-Rearfitted.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v86/Nova-crew/Nova%20WIP%20pics/31-Frontfitted.jpg

So went for a mini photoshoot,Lol
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v86/Nova-crew/Nova%20WIP%20pics/35.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v86/Nova-crew/Nova%20WIP%20pics/34.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v86/Nova-crew/Nova%20WIP%20pics/33-FenC.jpg

Got home, and asked for a few opinions and decided it was lacking something, thats it! Grey door handles to break up the white, sorted.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v86/Nova-crew/Nova%20WIP%20pics/37.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v86/Nova-crew/Nova%20WIP%20pics/36.jpg

Fuel cap was also replaced with a black one after i snapped the key in the old one,Lol.

This month also saw me sell my Fearless rear chrome brace, which i now regret.

May 06-Fancied fitting a single wiper, and luckily saw one for sale on here, off Tiiiiiimmy i think it was.
After spending quite a bit setting the linkage, it was on:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v86/Nova-crew/Nova%20WIP%20pics/38-Singlewiper-May06.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v86/Nova-crew/Nova%20WIP%20pics/39.jpg

By now i got slightly bored of analogue dash dials, so decided find a digidash, thought i'd got a bargain but it turned out the main halogen bulbs had blown, so that was a tenner i hadn't accounted for. Was worth it tho:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v86/Nova-crew/Nova%20WIP%20pics/40-Digidash-June06.jpg

June 06-Planned on fitting a set of clear rear clusters, and found a set on ebay, but the top lense was cracked, but i bought them anyway.
Test fit, didn't really like them personally
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v86/Nova-crew/Nova%20WIP%20pics/41-Clearrear.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v86/Nova-crew/Nova%20WIP%20pics/42.jpg

So instead i got another set of std GM rear lights from Andy Bishop, and after many hours of cutting, heat gunning, tigersealing, cleaning, these babies were born :D
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v86/Nova-crew/Nova%20WIP%20pics/43-Customrears.jpg
And soon fitted
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v86/Nova-crew/Nova%20WIP%20pics/44-Customsfitted.jpg
Much better than clears.

July 06-By now i'd had 1.2i power for over a year, the gearbox had started to whine( i later found out why,Lol)
So a quick trip along the A50 to fetch a F15CR gearbox that I spotted on Corsasport, a bargain at ?15
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v86/Nova-crew/Nova%20WIP%20pics/45-F15-July06.jpg

The original plan was to fit the box to the 1.2i, but i thought Meh, swap the whole engine, the same night i spotted a 1.4sr engine for sale, no g/box, but with my newly aquired f15, that didn't matter
So the engine was bought from John(g88 kag on here, chees mate)
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v86/Nova-crew/Nova%20WIP%20pics/46-1400engine-August06.jpg

I then decided to run it on SPI, not carb, so off came the Weber 32/34DTML, and that got sold on http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v86/Nova-crew/Nova%20WIP%20pics/47-Weberdtml.jpg
As did the 4-1 manifold that came on the engine(i already had one)
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v86/Nova-crew/Nova%20WIP%20pics/48-4bran.jpg

So that saw me with almost my money back on what the engine cost,Lol.

Aug 06-Engine conversion started, my first ever,Lol.
Old 1200 coming out
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v86/Nova-crew/Nova%20WIP%20pics/55.jpg
Car looking sorry for itself with an empty bay ready for cleaning up
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v86/Nova-crew/Nova%20WIP%20pics/56-Allgone.jpg

Got the F15 bolted up to the new 1400 engine
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v86/Nova-crew/Nova%20WIP%20pics/57-Neweng.jpg
and got that plonked in
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v86/Nova-crew/Nova%20WIP%20pics/58-In.jpg

Adam
31-01-07, 02:42 AM
Not really wanting swap the engine to gain about 5bhp on my old 1200, i fitted a few "tweaks" to the 1.4 engine.
A c14se cylinder head was found at a local scrappy, and painted up
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v86/Nova-crew/Nova%20WIP%20pics/51-Newheadrocker.jpg

A 1.3Sr carb inlet then had the ports modded to match the head:-
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v86/Nova-crew/Nova%20WIP%20pics/52-Modded1300inlet.jpg

So the original 1400 head was removed, and the head gasket changed, then the new head fitted:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v86/Nova-crew/Nova%20WIP%20pics/59-ChangeHg.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v86/Nova-crew/Nova%20WIP%20pics/60-Newhead.jpg

At this point i noticed my old F10 g/box from the 1200 had hardly any oil in it, hence the whining,Lol. And the waterpump had nearly seized solid. Luckily it held out until the new engine got fitted.

A quick strip down of the 1200 engine, a few of the coolant/oil passages looked blocked
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v86/Nova-crew/Nova%20WIP%20pics/65-Dismantleoldengine.jpg
So it was given to the local scrap man,Lol.

Sept 06-Fitted a universal K&N type filter, as the old one was damaged:-
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v86/Nova-crew/Nova%20WIP%20pics/66-NewKN-Oct06.jpg
Dont really like the look of it, but it does the job,Lol.

With the inlet slightly leaking air(think maybe cracked somewhere) I picked up a rare mk1 astra 1300s inlet off ebay(which has longer runs and a much better inlet hole)
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v86/Nova-crew/Nova%20WIP%20pics/67-Dec06.jpg
It was then modded and sprayed satin black, and fitted with a new 1.8SPI throttle body.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v86/Nova-crew/Nova%20WIP%20pics/69.jpg

Oct 06-The car went to a Rolling road day at Mikeanics in Congleton, where it made 84bhp, not bad, up from 59bhp as std.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v86/Nova-crew/Nova%20WIP%20pics/667-Oct-RR.jpg

Dec 06-By now i wanted more power, and just as it happens i spotted a Kent AST2 cam for sale, so i had it;
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v86/Nova-crew/Nova%20WIP%20pics/71-AST2cam.jpg
Also got a C14se rocker cover, looks nice and curvy,Lol.
Sanded that down, primed it, and its now Satin black:-
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v86/Nova-crew/Nova%20WIP%20pics/68-1.jpg

Kept the cam for a bit until i found some t40 carbs to use with it, i wasn't having much luck tho, so i bought some other bits
A set of half smoked rears, which look cool, but are fooked as one of the mounting posts is broken off, : (
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v86/Nova-crew/Nova%20WIP%20pics/70-Halfsmoked.jpg

So they just sit on my desk,Lol.

Jan 07-Having survived another winter, my cesaro's were looking a bit tired, but having no other wheels to fit whilst refurbing them i bought another set, cheers to John again.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v86/Nova-crew/Nova%20WIP%20pics/72-Newcesaros.jpg
They are currently mid refurb and need finishing.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v86/Nova-crew/Nova%20WIP%20pics/73.jpg

I was recently considering selling the kent cam, but luckily i found a set of Twin 40 weber dcoe's, that looked tired, but in working condition, they soon arrived:

Not looking too well
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v86/Nova-crew/Nova%20WIP%20pics/75.jpg

But a wire brush and splash of petrol works wonders
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v86/Nova-crew/Nova%20WIP%20pics/76-T40scleaned.jpg
Much better.

They are currently waiting to be fitted, but i have a slightly problem with a cathedral inlet(my head ports are round) so the inlet needs changing/modding:-
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v86/Nova-crew/Nova%20WIP%20pics/77-T40inlet.jpg

And that pretty much brings you up to date, got a few things planned.
Both bumpers need respraying, and i want the rear grab handle completely smoothing.
The carbs need fitting as does the cam and satin rocker cover.
I also have a runabout car, so the rear will now be stripped on the nova, floor sprayed etc.

And the cesaro's need finishing, dont know whether decide hurricane grey(same as bumpers) or White tho, few photoshops:-
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v86/Nova-crew/Nova%20WIP%20pics/Cesaro1-chop-Black.jpg

Been today to see about getting the t40 inlet modded, but no can do :(
He can only remove metal, not add it.

So thats pi**ed me off a bit,Lol.
If i dont find a round port inlet soon the carbs/inlet and AST2 etc will be sold on,and over this summer i'll fit a X20XEV engine(yes 2L ecotec,Lol)

Will put up a few updates when i finish the wheels etc.

Dont you dare, t40s are cool. Yup, but i dont want fit them with the wrong inlet, fitting the right inlet will give "free" power.
I've managed to get almost everything i need to fit the 40s now, and all been done on a budget, just the inlet might push the budget a bit, if i have to resort to buying one new.

Im dont have much to do tomorrow, so for a bit of a laugh im slapping the ast2 in, see how the spi reacts to that,Lol.

Cheers for comments.

The arches were repaired after i got it, and arch/lip resprayed.
Apart from that paintwork is original, but the doors/front wings were new a few years back so the paint on those isn't too old.

2 Winters have taken their toll tho, and ideally both rear arches now need the lip replacing to make it 100% gd. And a few stone chips here and there, all in all, not done too bad for a 15yr old car.

Lol @ draper.

I'll let you know mike if the 40s go for sale

That may soon be sorted tho :D

This is a quality car and thread!! Its quiet suprising how many bits can be "swapped" between Vauxhall's cos i'd of never of thought about a C14SE head and a 1300 carb inlet, its just amazing what can be learnt! I know now who to go to when i need some technical tips :D. And i agree go for the hurricane grey wheels, looks spot on! Keep up the good work Ad!

Also do you laquer them?

did ur (1.2i was it) have a five speed box???
Paul

Adam
04-02-07, 09:05 PM
Yeah Rick.
Normal spray paint from halfords/motor factors.

If you do a colour like gloss black/grey you dont need laquer as its not met.
But i always laquer things like bumpers/wheels to help with stone chips.

So i will be laquering them when there finished.

Just hope tyre fitter dont wreck them,Lol.

Sr_nova_gameover
05-02-07, 11:43 PM
cool coz i would love to find a 1.3sr but its really hard so i was thinkin of a 1.2 and put a 1.4 head on it and high lift cams which pretty much makes it a 1.3 but not if u no wot i mean. and then the box would fit lovely....

how easy was it makin the clocks??? or was it that u just buy them and fit all the sensors?? coz isnt the rev sensor on the gear box on nova's??

this car u have made looks the tits and i would like the one i want like urs but in my own little way..
cheers for helpin

Clocks just undo, and re-fit the white speed/rev.
All novas have the same fuel/coolant etc sensors? so they work fine.

Lol.
If the carb idea goes bad, it will be eco-tech'd
Either a 2L, or 1.6 16v with a manztel type inlet.

So 8v stuff will get sold.

oh yea, 1.6 ecotec - keeping it smallblock!

Whats the 8v tho? 1.4 or 1.6? it's and SE head anyway isn't it? i'll keep my eyes open, took me ages to find mine.

Took the carbs to bits today to make sure all the jets etc were clean.
They couldn't have been running too well previously as one of the accel pumps was completely blocked(just a small dribble of fuel coming out,Lol)
So i blasted that out with a bike tyre pump, and its all sorted now.

Nearly had a nasty accident tho, didn't realise how fooking far fuel shoots from the pump jet.

Any fuel in eye gen lol

Also have a Round Port T40 inlet on the way :) Big thanks to MikeySR who pointed it out on ebay to me, the auction wasn't titled very well, so it had one bid in about 6days.... :)

Awesome write up there.

I love this car, it looks so clean & unique. Major hats off to you for doing it on a budget as & when bits turn up.
In hindsight it must be so much more fun like that than just waving a chequebook at demon tweeks or whoever.

looking at the pics I'd almost accept a swap with mine...... really is a nice evolution though. The simplest Novas always look the best. A lesson to the fibreglass brigade at how to attract the right attention IMO.

Got two the wheels sprayed up today, colour came out quite well.
Need do the other two this week. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v86/Nova-crew/Nova%20WIP%20pics/P1110002Medium.jpg

Also planning on removing the rear interior tomorrow, with the rear carpet etc. Cleaning the sound deadening off the floor and spraying the floor up white. Plan on getting a pair of buckets/harnesses in the future sometime for the front. For now tho, std sr front seats.

Round port t40 inlet turned up today, in very good nick too.
I've smoothed the inside of the runners down with 60grit paper, let it nice and smooth, but rough enough so fuel flows through correctly.
Quick pic, compared to cathedral shape inlet-
I guess the round head larger valves make up for smaller port sizes.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v86/Nova-crew/Nova%20WIP%20pics/P1140001Medium.jpg

Turns out and may be selling all the t40 stuff tho and fitting a 16xe, not decided yet.

craig green
15-02-07, 12:43 PM
mmmm 16XE.

Is the cathedral type to fit a 16SE head type?

Adam
15-02-07, 04:24 PM
Cathedral fits 1200/1300 carb.
Round fits 14se and 16se.

Really tempted sell the lot and fit a 16xe tho, about same power as t40 1400, but good mpg all day long. And a lot of scope for future mods, bike tbs etc...

Do you do all your painting with rattle cans? Also am i right in thinking they are the halfords cans or not? (just when i use cans it never comes out that good) lol

Adam
15-02-07, 04:34 PM
Yeah, all with rattle cans.
I've never visited a bodyshop in my life lol

I used Holts paint from a local motor factors, halfords are way too expensive(?5 for 300ml can), Holts are ?2.74 for 300ml, the factors owner puts them as Trade price for me tho :)

Carbs are ready to go on, bolted to inlet etc.
Word of advice to anyone with a round port inlet, it seems the cast that the manufacturers make them from isn't really a direct copy of GM heads/inlet.
So bolt the inlet up and you get a "step" as the runner meets the head, could cost a few bhp, and afterall its free power.
pic:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v86/Nova-crew/Nova%20WIP%20pics/P1180001324234Medium.jpg
All four runners are the same.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v86/Nova-crew/Nova%20WIP%20pics/P11800063242Medium.jpg
Got to wait for me dad get home give me a hand bolting the carbs on, i use m8 bolts instead of studs/nuts so have to hold the weight of the carbs, line inlet up, put bolt in etc, bit difficult with two hands. lol

Sirnixalot
20-02-07, 01:38 PM
any news?

Adam
20-02-07, 07:46 PM
Yep there is.

Its Alive and Running :D

Took a while because of a lot of unexpected problems, like the spi coil having 2 ign live wires, but one splices into the spi ign module(which is now unused), so i had no 12v at the Sr coil. That held me up for a bit,Lol.
Also got to run a new wire for rev counter, as spi one is ran through the ecu.

And the lowered alternator bracket jammed the alternator fan blades :wtf: Good job i noticed that before trying to start engine, may have snapped the cambelt/alternator shaft. So i had to get the grinder out(again) and grind down the edge of the bracket.

Now all is good, they fired up quite easily, and sound fookin insane compared to the spi system.
Got to hook up the throttle cables tomorrow, and set the idle mix/balance screw, then go for a drive

Few pics(t'd the return line in, and have the spi pump running from a switched 30A relay, seems to work fine, altho im a bit confused about whether i should turn pump on then try start the engine. Or start the engine(it should fire up from the fuel in the carb bowl, then switch the pump straight on. As with pump on and engine not running where will the fuel go thats being pumped through the line? Down the return?):-

All done now, throttle cable arrived from FastRoad Cars today, top guys there. The 1m cable is plenty long enough.
Took a bit of getting used to with the throttle pedal as its opening 4barrels compared to 1 originally, alls good tho, easy to get the hang of after a few miles of driving.
Going to booking it in for a RR setup soon.

Also fitted my satin black sri rocker cover.

Adam
07-03-07, 07:09 PM
Piece of piss on the carbs, i got lucky and happened to find a set with almost perfect jetting for my engine.
Just set the idle mix by watching the rev counter, set the balance by ear,Lol.
And all is good, idle is quite steady, and it pulls well.

Tiny flat spot just before you go onto the main jet(about 3k rpm), but you can hide that with the accel pump jet.

I get no spitting back through the carbs, no exhaust popping etc, so they must be set up quite well.

Ideally it needs setting up(running a touch rich in i think the prog/idle circuits), but i'd quite easily say i could live with how it drives atm, even drives well at low speeds(pulls in 5th from low revs)
5 throttle pumps to start first thing/in cold weather seems to do the trick on mine, fires up first time, and idle's on its own within a few hundred yards.

Just need replace the camshaft oil seal, i must have nicked it when i was sliding the cam in and its leaking down the back of the cambelt cover slightly. So will get that changed asap.

Adam
07-03-07, 07:11 PM
O, and i need a new top seal for one carb too, its slightly damp with fuel.
But i'd have to buy a complete service kit for just one gasket, so might do that soon and fit new gaskets all round.

very nice thread, very interesting, how did you solve the port mismatching on the inlet manifold in the end then? did you dowel it to the head? and also when you had the engine running on the 1.8spi throttle body were you still running the engine on the 1.2spi ecu? i'm just asking out of interest that's all, i'm well impressed with the 84bhp you got on that set up, was it economical?

Maccas If your referring to the inlet not quite lining up with the head with the 40s, i just opened the head port out slightly.

I had a 1.8 throttle body on both my old 1.2i engine, and the 1400 engine.
It was the 1400 engine that made 84 ish bhp. It drove great and was very economical, 35+MPG driving foot to floor everywhere, about 40mpg on the motorway, even with a CR box.
It had the std 1.4i ecu, and 1.4i injector. Seemed to fuel ok.
I was planning on fitting the AST2, a 1.6i injector, and getting a "chip" to raise the rev limit(as it made 84bhp on the limit, a higher limit could of seen 90+), but decided go for 40s instead.

Cheers for the comments :)

Burgo, i wish you had mentioned that before i started the refurb! Lol. Sounds like a top idea so you can get paper/masking tape under the lip of the tyres.

Right, carried on with the cesaros today.
Got the centre caps smoothed, took fooking ages, many skims of filler, hours of sanding etc,Lol.
But they came out quite well, not 100% perfect smooth, but ok for me, and the time it took.
Ive not seen a set completely smoothed before, so i hope its a first :p :)
As std they have a badge, under the badge is a 1/4" hole, and a 2inch recess where the badge sits.
Im hoping totally smooth will make the wheels look bigger than they actually are.

The other set may be for sale one day,Lol.

Andy-Not bad at all mate, saying they aint even set up properly, i get about 27mpg.
That includes some floored B-road action, no motorway driving.

I drove a mates XR2 which is on 40s the other week, that aint setup either, but it drives ****e compared to mine, loads of flat spots and idle all over the place(my idle is as good as it was on spi). So amazingly i seem to have got lucky and got a set of carbs almost perfectly setup for my engine.

I still wouldn't say no to a RR tweak tho, just to get a bit more low end power, but the money it may cost i'd probably rather put towards another engine tbh. Maybe a 1600 8v and bolt the carbs on that, or mpi with aftermarket ecu. Again, money i dont have atm tho :(

The 1400 engine has developed a weird misfire that seems to come and go, but im hoping it lasts ok till June time, when my insurance runs out, so i can fit the 1600 16v. It will be entirely std for the minute, apart from a set of kent cams.

Mike.

17-04-07, 07:00 PM
how come you chose the x16xe? and not the c16xe?

Adam
17-04-07, 07:02 PM
Because this x16xe came up for sale.
Not really much difference between the two.
Both have the same potential.

O, and x16xe is ?80 less insure ;)

bieransri
17-04-07, 07:10 PM
cool, got everything, transponder, chip key etc?

if so might aswell for less money overall, looking forward to seeing it go together as ive considered the c16 for mine

Adam
17-04-07, 07:55 PM
Aye mate got everything.
The wiring looks entirely straight foward too
The entire engine loom just undoes from the engine in about 20secs..

Just about 6/7 wires to the ecu to wire, and a few at the transponder pickup.
And ive got the SAI and EGR to block off, which a c16xe wouldn't have. But thats nothing an alloy sheet wont sort.

So if you want a 1600 16v i wouldn't particularly hold out for a c16xe.

all looks good ad. bet you cant wait to fit it! will be nice and quick!

but defo get some carbs on it in the future, i heard mine for the first time in a while yesterday and tere awsome as you no!

Adam
05-05-07, 08:44 PM
Cheers Lew.
Yeah, i'll deffo miss the carb noise, hence why i might save them for a rainy day,Lol.

John
05-05-07, 08:56 PM
Lookin good ad! i reckon you'll be wel chuffed with it.
On the inlet front, i once had a mantzel powerbox on the 1.4, and tbh the quality imo was shi*e. It fitted poorly, and the casting was crap. I reckon you could easily make one out of say, 4mm steel, and see the same results a a mantzel.

Adam
05-05-07, 08:59 PM
I was thinking of maybe going to a local engineering works with some drawings and seeing if they could make one up.

I'd probably see good power gains with 40s, but im back to the lower mpg etc situation then,Lol.

SRlew
05-05-07, 09:05 PM

I've heard of bulkhead fouling issues too with carbs/trumpets on the x14/x16 too.
Have a go at the powerbox fella, i'l weld it up for you if necc, plus you can't beat the "having a go yourself and netting 20 bhp" feeling!
I ran an astra x16xel inlet pipe on mine, much smoother/direct than the oddly shaped corsa/tigra item.

Adam
05-05-07, 09:08 PM
My sell the 40s on then, and make plans for a inlet box.

Adam

Cheers mate.

Just ordered some new number plates(the old ones are fooked, and mouldy(nearly failed mot on them,Lol)

Also got a Flat F13 type Flywheel to replace the hefty pot one that came on the 16v, saves about 4kg in weight.

Ive also made up a wiring loom, using the car side of the corsa ecu plug(so it plugs in), also spliced in the immobiliser pickup. Now just needs to be wired into the car(6wires), and everything should work. Might do the wiring sometime soon, as thats one less job to do when engine goes in, and it'll then just plug in :D

Just got to have the tyres put on the white Cesaro's and respray the bumpers, and it'll be sorted for pv.
Ive just refitted both wipers back on too, in place of the single wiper, got a bit annoying with the wiper half way up the screen. I might refit it if i can find a nice looking single wiper arm.

Adam
24-05-07, 12:04 PM
New plates have arrived, look much better than the old original ones.
Front bumpers been resprayed(haven't really got the weather to do the rear one :( ) So that'll stay as it is.

Got to get the mobile tyre fitter out here in a bit to get the tyres swapped onto the new rims.

Also, engine is completely built up, sorted the alternator situation, so it now runs a single V setup :)

Just need a gsi exhaust system now to make the downpipe hopefully bolt up when the engine goes in :)
