Adam
06-03-09, 06:28 PM
Its now finished and ready to fcuk off.
It will be gone for Monday if i can find someone to shift it(with it being just a shell)

New shell should be here next week sometime, and im off work next week too, so have time get some stuff done.

The not so good news is that im moving into a flat, so need deposit money etc for that, so a LET engine is off for the time being! Just going to stick the standard XE in for now, and see whats what. It'll also avoid hassle with IC/crossmember cutting etc etc, and seeing as there hasnt been much interest in anyone buying the xe, i'll just chuck it in..... lol

Graeme
06-03-09, 06:32 PM
Are you seem welding the green one Ad? Iirc John didn't bother did he?

Adam
06-03-09, 06:39 PM
John didnt nope. But its a solid shell, which a lot of people say dont reallly need welding.

But as im going to be tracking it etc, im welding it up whilst the interior etc is all out :)

Graeme

Adam
10-03-09, 09:12 PM
LET power is on future plans, when i have a bit more cash.
Im just chucking the XE in for now though, seeing as its sitting here doing nothing.

Also got these throttle bodies lying about.... ;)

In the process of moving out into a flat atm though, so a bit short of both time and cash.

Just made a list of things to do, and going by my work rate its not looking good for Combe lol lol

*note, the sunroof. When people try and fit full cages into a sunroof shell, why do they not fit? Do they touch the winder or something? This sunroof must be an aftermarket conversion, as its not a gm sunroof, has no winder... Its just a tilt up effort.... So hopefully it'll be fine.

Also, are the rear arches tighter on a mk1 shell? The 15s and proxes rub like fook, even just rolling the shell!! They cleared on the mk2. Shall have to get the grinder out on the arch lips sometime.

Lee H
11-03-09, 11:09 AM
Main hoop doesn't usually fit as the cassette for the sliding part of the sunroof goes right to the back of the car. If it's just a pop up it should be fine.

Adam
11-03-09, 11:13 AM
Sound!
Yeah, its just a pop up type, has no sliding mechanism

scott.parker
11-03-09, 11:27 AM
Sound!
Yeah, its just a pop up type, has no sliding mechanism

IIRRC some of the early mk1's had that type of sun roof?

And as Lee said it's only the GSi type that foul it etc.

Ad i like the two tone Cesaro's lol

And good to see there is some of my Mids stickers being used (not put mine on yet) :p

You'll get it done for combe if Jon, and Christian help you + any other members.

The aftermarket one's were also installed by the dealers when a customer would buy a new car that was already made.
Have fun with it!

Adam
11-03-09, 11:34 AM
Ad i like the two tone Cesaro's lol

Tempted keep them like that for track! lol
I was going remove the mids region sticker lol, as it'll make the front end look better imo
Ive got a mids sticker somewhere though, so could fit that in rear side window or somewhere.

TBH there isnt a load of work to do to get it driveable. Basically just bolting stuff on. The exterior can stay how it is....

Main things to do:
Weld bay/Repaint bay after weldage(altho the bays solid and john drove it xe'd with no welding...), but still probably worth doing whilst the bays empty.

Swap front brakes/brake servo over to mine

Get the Avo's on

Fit buckets in

Get engine/box in, and swap the fuel tank over to mine.

Thats pretty much it to get it driveable, dont NEED the cage in right away.

Oh, and then an mot, which should be fine tbh. Emissions etc aint going be a problem on a b-plater.... It also doesnt need side repeaters, rear seatbelts etc lol

Steve
11-03-09, 11:35 AM
Yeah ive always found the early mk1s cant handle 195s lol I took the grinder on mine and they cleared fine only to discover that they were tthen hitting on the shock plastic cover. I now run 185s and don't have any problems lol

Adam
11-03-09, 12:40 PM
Im going have clearence issues on the inner and outer...
The outer being the tight arches, and the inner being the Avo coilover... lol

Benn-We'll see, but its definently staying std xe for now(bar Sbd exh manifold and Irmy powercap)

Should be off up MachineMart tomorrow to pickup some welding bits!!! And will then crack on with the welding. Going call in Factors/Halfords too to see if they sell spray cans in my colour, but im betting 20quid that they dont. According to paints4u.com they stopped using the colour in 1986...., and its Beryll-Silver Moss Green Metallic lol

Benn
11-03-09, 09:37 PM
Just get a paint surplyer to make you two cans of it, even halfods can do that.

John
11-03-09, 10:01 PM
Lol, i tried that ad, to no avail, lots of place made them for me, but none matched. I ended up having half a litre mixed up and went for it with a borrowed spray gun!

Adam
11-03-09, 10:16 PM
Doh! :(

Its just the bay that will need a quick blow over after its been welded up....
So hopefully you might not notice a colour mis-match, as it'll only be in the bay....

Bit of work today. Removed the sound deadening off the firewall, and cracked on with cleaning the bay seams up. No seam sealer and Nitromors FTW lol
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v86/Nova-crew/Photo018Medium.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v86/Nova-crew/Photo017Medium.jpg

Bit of surface rust by the turret, still nice and solid as fook though :D
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v86/Nova-crew/Photo016Medium.jpg

Hopefully on with the welding tomorrow.
Also bought some "Vauxhall Silver Green Metallic" from Halfords, which looks spot on... Will see how close the match is.
Looks like the whole bay will need a quick respray, especially where the sound deadening has been stuck on for so long.....

AlexW
12-03-09, 07:47 PM
Isnt the sound deading quite rare to find in good nick? i bet you ruined it when taking it off? :(

So cracked on with the new one, weapon of choice. Worlds smallest mig welder :( Converted it to run on Gas, and have to say it welds a **** load easier/better than with gasless wire...

Mike
14-03-09, 08:30 PM
Same welder as mine Ad, mines just got some mods on lol wheels and sheet like lol really good machines TBH. Pure C02 is what you want to be using for seam or stitch welding anyway :thumb:

EDIT: What mask you using? An autodarkening or a old skool pish pot helmet?

MK999
14-03-09, 08:34 PM
I don't know how anyone welds with an 'old skool pish pot' helmet as you put it, just watching the demonstrations at uni I couldn't see fark all that was going on! Didn't even attempt doing it with that, borrowed the auto one lol

Mike

Dude, for how cheap auto masks are these days you may aswell buy yourself one!! I got one a brand new one for £45 something and its fantastic bit of equipment! Mine does TiG though, so its very worthwhile for me like.

I did once use a pair of Oakleys to weld in, didnt even wake up with arc eye the next day lol lol

MK999
14-03-09, 08:44 PM
I would if it was my own welder, doing motorsport eng at uni and one of the modules is materials and manufacturing, obviously go through various processes etc and welding is one of them, just had a demonstration of how it's done and then got to give it a go, apparently the lecturer was surprised it was my first time welding when I asked for some pointers afterwards (they kinda have to say "yep that's good" instead of telling everyone their welding is ****e lol)

Welding looks alright ad, what are plans for the exterior? Keeping it mostly as is?

Adam
15-03-09, 02:31 PM
Mike-Mines only the 90A Clarke welder, yours is 100 iirc? So mine really is a baby, the thermal cutout was on pretty much constantly yesterday! lol

Im using a full face mask, but really need a auto darkening jobbie.

Steve-Ive now got a SR front bumper/grille, so im going try them on and see how it looks. The more i look at the thin bumper/grill combo tho the more i like it! lol
So will probably end up sticking with the current bumpers... There a bit faded though so will probably give them a quick spray in "bumper grey", and then refit the red stripe

The rear bumper side mounts are knackered(hence why it sits dodgy in pics), but i picked up another bumper last week off dougie, which is sound. But its white, so will need spraying anyway.

Went Looms scrappy in Derby today with Iainel, managed to get hold of window winders, door handles/surrounds and a grey rear bumper with intact side mounts.
Got the bumper back home and compared it to mine and then realised this new one has a seperate bottom splitter/lip, whereas the one on the car is "solid" if you get me. So it looks like i'll end up spraying and using Dougies bumper, as thats a smooth type one :)

Yeah mines the 100A welder cheif, thermal cut out has never come on for me though lol I dont use it enough lol

EDIT: Heres my mask, mine came in at about £45 IIRC, does ARC, MiG, MMA, MAG & TiG, very very sensitve (will black out if you look direct at a halogen ceiling light lol lol) Solar powered, so it takes charge from the flash of the arc :thumb:

Adam
15-03-09, 06:20 PM

Im not respraying the whole bay, leaving the slam panel etc...
Going for another look in factors tomorrow for a similar colour that will do for the engine bay, as it seems a lot of hassle getting a compressor etc just to blow the bay over.
Then the cage needs test fitting and plates welding in. Going fit a rear strut brace too.

And from there its just bolting things back on off the white one.... Avo's,front brace, front brakes, fuel tank, buckets etc
When im using it on the road im probably going keep GSi rear seats in too, as im not a big fan of the look of a stripped interior.

Really wanted do Combe action day in it, April 25th, but realised that might be pushing it a bit. As ive now only got weekends to work on it, and im going be mega busy over this next month with non car related stuff.....

So probably just aim for National Weekend..... As ive got to tax/mot/insure it too....
Theres still quite a bit of money needed to go into it too, need 4 195/45 tyres etc

You've got it all wrong Benn...

Welded brace FTW!!

Cheers people :)

Tom-Ive done a few stitches around the x-member/tie bar double skin plates yeah, but left it at that. Both sides now have a plate over the crossmember where the tie bar brackets bolt on too.

Most of the bay is now im primer, sanding down/removing the sound deadening glue was a nightmare!!!! Can still see some of it through the primer, so going sand further and then get some filler primer on there...

Steve
15-03-09, 11:33 PM
Went Looms scrappy in Derby today with Iainel, managed to get hold of window winders, door handles/surrounds and a grey rear bumper with intact side mounts.
Got the bumper back home and compared it to mine and then realised this new one has a seperate bottom splitter/lip, whereas the one on the car is "solid" if you get me. So it looks like i'll end up spraying and using Dougies bumper, as thats a smooth type one :)
Yeah the early ones had those bumpers without the cutout for the gte rear lip, (obvious really as the gte hadnt been invented then lol)

What bumper spray you using? Ive got the same problem with my rear bumper having knackered side mounts got a decent one but that needs spraying.

Adam
15-03-09, 11:38 PM
Im going use some "dark grey trim" paint that my local factors sells. Ive seen it used it before and it looks a perfect match for the original plastic colour... Plus it'll never fade :)

The smoother rear bumper looks nicer imo, so i'll respray the white one

Steve
15-03-09, 11:41 PM
Ah right, mayhem was using some bumper paint which looked almost factory, not the same stuff is it?

Nice welding Adam, looking good dude :thumb:

It inspires me to try welding the bay up on my own car myself!

What are you doing regards the exterior, are you having a respray dude or going with the current paint?

Good progress though!

Adam
17-03-09, 05:25 PM
Keeping with the current paint. Its in great condition considering its 24years old, but does have the odd mark/dint that ideally i want sorting. But it'll be sound for this year at least.
Could do with rear arch repair panel on the rear pass side too(the worst bit on the car) where theres rust just starting to come through.

Just tried the paint i bought from Halfrauds, which looked and is called the same colour as the car is....
Does it match, does it bollocks lol, completely different colour.

There not HH plates mate, there just plates that have been added due to a hole in the top x-member plate, due to a leaking rad :thumb:
But should still help improve the strength :)

Rich-I carried on doing some of the bay just incase it looked a closer match when dry....... No issues anyway, i'll just sand it back down....

The colour is Vauxhall Silver Green metallic, and the car is Silver Moss Green metallic..... But tbh the car looks more champagne/gold than green...... (a bit like ollys old shell?)

If i cant find a close match, i'll just do it anthracite.

The Simps
17-03-09, 08:41 PM
No worries on the plates :D

I had a nova in the colour a few years back and recall having problems matching the colour.

Do you have an APEC up your way? There's one here in Norwich that if you give them your paint code they can mix it up into an aerosol for you. Fair price too iirc.

bowman
17-03-09, 08:50 PM
yeah, most paint shop suppliers will be be able to match and rattle can it for you.....usually £10 500ml tin.... or reckon the 1999ish vectra champagne will be very similar...

Halfords codes are crap, they have never matched any paint code i've ever given them. Always come out random colours.

Steve
18-03-09, 12:01 AM
Really? The three different colours ive had mixed up at hellfords have always been a good match!? Fukk knows how they came up with that, its not even close! The plate on the tiebar is probably a good idea though ad, mines rotted through there on the passenger side so its always good to give it more strength.

MK999
18-03-09, 12:36 AM
It's alright if the code they have, is actually for the right mix, i've been given burgundy as flame red, and yellow/cream as honda championship white though, and they didnt even have the dark grey code i found on their system!

Adam
21-03-09, 01:28 PM
Another weeks gone, progress=zero lol
I need some motivation :(
Its just basically the bay spraying(waiting for some custom spray cans to arrive), and the cage holding things up...

If i didnt need fit the cage i could crack on with the interior/wiring to get it looking more like a car....

Test fitted the cage earlier, any opinions of the right sort of position to have the cage feet sitting? Still having a dash fitted etc.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v86/Nova-crew/B571%20HTV%20WIP/DSCN1380Medium.jpg

Gap under B-pillar leg(normal iirc), so it looks like im going to have to make two box feet if you get me(and weld the foot plate back onto the cage. Previous owner shortened it slightly to get it to fit in with a sunroof...

Got to remove the sound deadening where the spreader plate needs welding to the floor(not removing all the sound deadening, as A-I cba, and B im having carpet fitted so you wont see it anyway.

Looks cool

And another exhaust, pic of the backbox.... Chrome tip binned and matt black tip welded on, stealthy
Just hope its not over track sound limits...

And Ive never even thought about sun visors, guess you could fit them to the bar??

Scott

Adam
21-03-09, 06:10 PM
Not sure mate, they definently wont flip down with the windscreen bar...
So you either mount them elsewhere, or have them permanent flipped down infront of the screen bar.

I can sort the doorcards with some mk1 cards, as they have no bottom handle bit(that will hit the doorbar)

peester
21-03-09, 06:23 PM
woah.. wheres the cage from, and whys u not got the 6 dial clocks that car had as std..??

Adam what i was kinda saying was, IIRC the sun visors are fixed with small screws, into plastic fixtures?? Can these not be drilled/screwed to the bar?

As they are small screws it should not weaken the bar any. ;)

Had a bit of time today, but didnt get much done.
Got the tiebars/tca's off, removed the old bushes. Got new Yellow poly's to fit.

Wont be seen anyway, and any paint will protect it :)

GSi brake servo and MC fitted, had to recut and reflare the ends of the brake lines though as it seems for some reason the early MC have double flared unions, whereas all the late ones have single "point" flares.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v86/Nova-crew/B571%20HTV%20WIP/DSCN1401.jpg

Then went to hoist the engine up and get it mounted when i noticed that the drivers engine mount has a 1" inch crack through the metal of it
Not sure whether the crash caused it, or the weight/stress of the old engine did, but yeah its fcuked and has been binned.
So i need a new drivers mount, will probably buy a set of solids though!

lol good to see progress. I know where your coming from about not knowing where nuts/bolts go. Ive got 3 buckets worth of nuts/bolts/washers/more bolts mixed together from 3 different cars lol

Whats that inlet hose from? Do you know if the plastic pipes going to fit between the engine/supsension strut. The standard hoses are squashed into place

Adam

Its off a V6 i think, with the air temp sender in...

I think it fits as it came off John H's engine, so i assume it fits.

Ive got an original SRi airbox to use too, if i can get it to fit the xe inlet hose.
As the old induction cone is fitted on the astra, and looks a bit chav imo

Yeah the bolts are a nightmare, spent about 40mins today trying remember what a xe starter motor bolt looks like, then randomly found a bolt lying in the grass next to the car, which fits lol lol

Yep, mine never ran one before, but i am on the new one, as the oil dose get very hot while on track, so the temp rises quicker, any things worth it to keep the temperature down eh.

Cool, good work mate. :thumb: Can't remember if you said, but is this a pure track car or road use as well?
Mostly track/pod.
But i will use it on the road in summer too.
Cant beat country lanes, windows down, in the summer

Benn-If vauxhall fitted a cooler to a xe in a std cav/cally, then fitting one on mine is definently a wise move imo
As i plan on caining the tits off this engine just like the old one :thumb: :D
And thats just what pipe came with the inlet.....

Ali-Ive got two SFi boxes spare so could try it with one, probably wont be that arsed about it though and just leave it as is now.
And yep, airboxes ftw.

Scott-Aye, i was suprised to see the mount fcuked, properly cracked straight through and would of probably fallen in two if i had used it

Got some solid mounts on the way off Ebay, £89 delivered
Once they arrive can get them bolted on, and the engine lifted up and bolted in. Then hubs/tie bars etc all back on, fuel tank on and get the car back on the ground. Its just the cage holding things up atm as i just dont have the time fit it.... Might even chuck my buckets, and the dash in, and just run it cageless for the time being. Want it at Nat day next month if i can.... Might be short for time though.

Actually i never took the old engine above 2500rpm :)

Baxter- At the most ive got like a couple of weekends to work on it. Busy this weekend(well, sat at least), and next weekend. And it then needs taxing/insuring/mot'ing before it goes anywhere....

General Baxter

Adam

Exactly, wayyy more than me. :(
I usually make a plan to get up here early on the weekends, but then get too tempted to go out fri/sat night up town, spend stupid amounts of money, and then feel too rough to do anything the next day.... lol lol

Bit of progress today, engine is now in.
Excuse the ****e pics as i only had my phone with me.

The solid mounts are an absolute nightmare to fit!!!!
How do people usually fit the drivers side mount to the engine mount? as originally the mount is threaded, but solid ones aint..... I ended up having to put a bolt through from the inside of the chassis leg
And the rear mount hole was way off, meaning ive had to cut a slot where the hole was to open it out, so i could get the bolt through. Bad news being its weakened the bracket quite a bit imo, will have to keep an eye on it as its even weaken than it was originally. And plenty of people find the bracket twists......

Cheers lads.

It seems having to elongate the hole in the rear mount for solids is normal...

Good work dude, and pfft glue mounts rule!

Mounts sound shonky tbh.

Adam
02-05-09, 08:40 PM
Meh
The weight increase is made up for with the superior power and TORQUE :p

It actually fits in easier than a std baby valver due to not having the huge inlet etc hitting things.

Are you using std mounts on your let

I am. I have some solid mounts but when I slot the hole in the rear mount the engine obviously sits slightly different and then my linkage hits the steering rack and I can't get all 6 forward gears!

Benn

Yeah, having to slot mounts just sounds like they are badly made tbh, plus how much they cost for funk all really..

Im running solid mounts on mine and had to make the hole on the rear mount longer as you would never get it in with out doing that.
A friend has done it on his turbo as well.

Adam
03-05-09, 01:11 PM
Sounds like its the only way to do it then... As the original hole was miles off.

Benn-Yes they cost a bit, but i really wouldn't want a 200+hp engine sitting on mounts designed for a 1L/1.2? lol
Its going jump about everywhere.

bah im sure jack runs the v6 on std's lol

Not knowing how 'out' the mount holes are, but I would suggest slackening off all bolts with the engine/box supported on a jack. Then tighten them all up together paying attention to align the engine where you want it. If most of the bolts are in & you have trouble with the last bolt, there is little movement or tolerance to align things. With it all loose things should go together nicely before final tightening.

Keep at it Ad.

Mounts are the same tho on a cav turbo, rubber with metal in the middle..
And the soild mount over have less rubber really..

Already tried that mate, it wasnt going go.
The holes are out by about 1/2-3/4 of an inch....

Update on its way :D

Pic of how i had to mod the rear mount
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v86/Nova-crew/B571%20HTV%20WIP/DSCN1408Medium.jpg
As you can see ive had to make quite a bit slot..... But i think it'll be sound. Will keep an eye on it though.

Alternator chassis mod that was done by John, no ugly cutouts here, just a nice neat cut, press back and then reweld... Loads of clearence, and i even fitted the alt belt after fitting the engine..
BTW for anyone wanting a single v belt for a xe, Halfords 925A fits spot on... ;)

And how i left it for tonight
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v86/Nova-crew/B571%20HTV%20WIP/DSCN1421Medium.jpg

Tomorrow if i get a chance to do anymore, im wanting the starter/alt wired up, driveshafts on and tie bars etc fully tightened.
Can then get the Avo's on the front, along with the brakes and get it back on the floor

What oil cooler/pipes are people using??? The one ive got fitted, the rigid pipes seem way too long and want to sit the cooler over where the rad fan is. Ideally i want it sitting central, behind the bar between slam and crossmember if you get me....

Looking good Adam, do you think it'll be done for PVS ?

Adam
03-05-09, 07:05 PM
Should be yeah.
The bodywork wont be as good as i would want it to be.
Ideally i want the pass rear arch replacing, and a few other bits on the car(laquer peeling etc) sorting.
But wont have time for that before PV.

Dont think the cage will be fitted either unless i get another full weekend spare....

It should be there though :)
