Got two of the mo's sprayed up in black for a quick test fit.
They look better in black than they in white imo, maybe because im bored of white wheels though.

Plenty of brake clearence compared to Cesaros

Yes mate, off his high spec 1650 engine

Ash-Nah, these are going on the proper xe;) lol . Will be fitting a std xe first though, and then swapping to the bodies later on

Rich
07-11-08, 06:13 PM
changed your mind again? lol

Thought you were building the xe with bodies then putting it in?

Adam
08-11-08, 05:29 PM
Nah, the xe IS going in next week if it passes mot on Monday. Im off work next week.
And then the bodies etc will be going on at a later date.

Better doing it that way as ive got time to check the engine is all good, and have a nice power increase when i get bored with std xe power.

Adam
09-11-08, 03:44 PM
Been sorting stuff for Mot today, MOT is 10am tomorrow morning.
Had to swap the entire exhaust system and manifold back over to a std one, amazing how quiet it is now. Can hear more induction noise though
Checked everything else over, all seems good so hopefully it'll pass. :D

Also picked up a SBD throttle body inlet for the xe today, got the bodies bolted to it, looks cool
Will be test fitting that to the engine this week sometime.

John
09-11-08, 03:46 PM
Where'd you pick the manifold up from ad? pics of the two together?

Good luck for the mot!

Adam

Amazingly mate a wanted ad on a local site came up with a guy with one for sale, 1mile from my house too lol lol
£50 well spent :D, it already has the coolant connection etc too. I just need to remove a air temp sender in runner 4, and replace it with a brake servo union.

When i come round yours i'll compare it to your Jenvey one :)

The who what what?

Benn
09-11-08, 07:56 PM
To get tbs to run well when cold there are is a cold start holes that you pipe up to an idel control like valve, but sadly i've never seen one with them so they all run like crap in the cold/start up.

Adam
09-11-08, 10:55 PM
Nah, no such idle valve on bodies.
Just set the idle with the stop screw and let it be :)

Rick Draper
09-11-08, 11:47 PM
My LET has no idle control valve Benn and ran well when cold and hot. Its all in the mapping.

Benn
09-11-08, 11:55 PM
Yeah?
Every xe on tbs i've been near was crap when cold... Cause none of them had it.

They were wise to the HID's then, maybe the beam was way off (scattered), usual nonsense with rear seats FFS!

Adam
10-11-08, 03:20 PM
Well, three of those are easy :).

How bad is the chassis?
Indeed.
Chassis doesn't look bad at all, been quoted £220 though
Tester says 3-4hours labour after a quick look, more if it turns out worse than it looks.

I would do it myself, but it just isnt the weather to be sitting outside grinding/welding, so im not sure what do. Its the two rails behind the splash guard that are weak/corroded. So quite a tricky place to make plates for too, hmmm.

Craig-nope, he wasnt wise to the HIDs at all. He didn't even know they were HIDs, thought it was just dodgy headlamp lenses till i explained  He failed it because he says the headlamps no longer produce beams, they just throw light everywhere. Like looking at two mega bright blobs he described it as lol lol

For once the tester was a really sound guy! The emissions were sky high so he sat the engine at about 6000rpm for a minute, which then got them down to a passable level. He could if he wanted have just said fail as soon as the emissions failed both the fast idle tests....
But he put himself out to get it to pass
He was also going fail on insecure front springs when jacked up, until i quickly wound the adjuster up to make the spring tight :thumb:

The fixes are simple, remove and bin rear seats and belts. Fit std headlamp bulbs, cable tie headlamps in to secure the bottoms.
Its just the welding that is either going to be a utter c**t to repair myself, or cost me a lot of cash for them to put right.

Mazz
10-11-08, 03:24 PM
Bit of a pisser about the welding dude :(

LMAO lol

You can have some rusty chassis pics instead tomorrow :thumb:

John-Cheers for the good offer mate, i'll be cracking on cleaning it all up tomorrow to see how much platage is needed. Had a quick look earlier and it seems its the splash gaurd to jacking point join thats gone(behind where the mudflap sits), so it'll shouldn't be a massive hassle.
And i'll get cracking sorting the welding myself :thumb:

Just need find some where local to get some steel sheet from.

Basically a bit like this(pic taken from Nova Ian's WIP thread)
But just a single inch hole.

Thought I recognised that pic of the rusty area in question! lol

Hope you get it sorted problem free :thumb:

Adam
11-11-08, 05:55 PM
Cracked on today, and an inch hole turned pretty much into Ian's pic above lol lol
Was not expecting that.
So got it cleaned up, and plated over as best i could
Primered and seam sealered, not the tidiest of jobs, but strength over looks, and it should be sound

Exact same repair on both sides, in the same place.
All painted and waxoyled now.

In progress pic
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v86/Nova-crew/Photo-0048.jpg

Got the headlamp bulbs back to standard, cable tied the bottom of the headlamps in lol, and removed the rear seats and belts.
Will be ringing mot place tomorrow at 9am for a re-test.
If it fails i WILL burn it.

Makes me think whether this is the right shell to be fitting a big block into tbh.

Benn
11-11-08, 08:36 PM
Get some of the headlight clips orderd.
Good work sorting it.. If where you paint the sealer on your paint is on in a S patton with the brush it looks factor..

And when ever you grind a small bit of rust back it ALLWAYS gets bigger.. lol

Why remove the rear seats and belts?

Adam
11-11-08, 08:39 PM
It failed on rear seats and belts, because i have fixed bucket seats so you cant get out of the back seats, if in a crash and trying to get out of the car etc.

Will get some new headlamp clips, they've been broke for 3years though and never give me a problem till this years mot,Lol.

That amount of rust came from one hole about the size of a thumb lol

Benn
11-11-08, 08:42 PM
Ah i see, and 3years? Christ i've fitted about 6this year..lol not have a bag on 20 in the garage..lol

Sadly it allways starts small. Thats why you never poke anything witha screw driver..lol

Adam
11-11-08, 08:43 PM
Yeah, ive had no clips at all for 3years, and no testers mentioned it till this year lol lol

dhdev (Oli)

Adam
12-11-08, 12:27 PM
Insecure headlamps again- Awaiting new clips of CorsaKid
No beam image from one of the headlamps(possibly a ****ed lamp)
And one side of the welding needs a extra plate adding just to box off the corner.

The rear seats now pass as there sitting in my garden lol lol

Going be a few days wait though now, for the headlamp clips and stuff :(

Riggy
12-11-08, 12:29 PM
gutted , the clips are only a quid from vaux though lol , ive got a couple here still , might have some spare headlights not sure if i sold them , could have a look if you need though :thumb:

Adam
12-11-08, 12:33 PM
Aye, hopefully have the clips for tomorrow.

There looks fook all up with the headlamp to me, so i'll get the tester to see if adjusting the beam will sort it.

Will probably make a start of the welding this afternoon if i cba :roll:

Mike
13-11-08, 12:29 PM
So i take it its big block time after its passed MOT Ad? Or you having thoughs about a reshell?

Adam
13-11-08, 12:50 PM
I have no more time off work this side of xmas :(
Booked this week off hoping it would fly through mot on Monday, and i could then spend this week fitting the big block.
So thats gone for a burton lol

So im unsure what to do atm, nova still has mot and its raining outside so im not doing anything on it

Benn
13-11-08, 07:37 PM
Was it the headlamp? Or the hid?

Adam
13-11-08, 09:28 PM
Well, both headlamps failed on "no beam image"
Fitted std bulbs and now the drivers side passed fine.

So i think the pass side lamp is shagged somehow.

So yeah it was definently the hid's causing the beam problem.

Benn
13-11-08, 09:33 PM
Knew they would sadly.

Adam
13-11-08, 09:36 PM
I had a look in the beam lense tester thing at the mot centre and there was no beam at all lol
The whole box was just filled with light

Got them just mate.
But i took the car down for retest this morning (the garage dont really open today but i persauaded the tester just to open for 20mins as i need the car for work tomorrow), so i ended up getting two clips from Vauxhall yesterday lol lol
Amazed to find they are only 67pence each and they keep them in stock....
So i'll just save the 2 off you for spares.

And its now passed with no advisories :D

Hoping to get Donny booked for 14th December, and hopefully(again) chuck the xe in over a weekend as i want more power for donny this time round :)

Popped over to John H's this afternoon to try my inlet/bodies on his xe.

Trumpets sit about 2inches away from the firewall, and the inlet/bodies clear the alternator :)

So all is looking good.

23-11-08, 08:54 PM
Why cant you fit the old exhaust? or you sold it?

Adam
28-11-08, 05:30 PM
Ive sold my custom Ashley system off the 1600 mate.

Got that brand new Scorpion to fit, but just cba atm......

Hopefully picking a astra runabout up off John at the weekend, sort insurance/tax for that on Monday, and then it gives me almost two weeks to get the xe in before Donny on the 14th :D

Adam
02-12-08, 05:55 PM
Ive now got boost power in the form of a mk3 astra  lol

Just need to sort my insurance, going have to remove the insurance from the nova though and swap it to the astra, but then insure the nova for a day, for donny on the 14th.
Meaning Donny will be the cars first outing with the xe in (hopefully) lol
I can see things going badly.

Welsh Dan
02-12-08, 06:18 PM
I can see things going badly.

Is it worth dayinsuring a mate on the nova then to drive it there and back incase you need to tow it with the astra?

Adam
02-12-08, 06:30 PM
Thats a good plan mate, might see if i can sort that.

Adam
05-12-08, 04:44 PM
Just rung HIC and they want £160 INCREASE to insure the astra over the nova
WHAT THE F**K, i actually LOL'd down the phone lol lol
And then asked if she meant decrease, nope, increase.
That was the end of the phone call lol

Looks like im still small block for Donny then and the xe's sitting for another 6month doing nothing.

Rich
05-12-08, 06:13 PM
Insurance is a joke, possibly because of the icy conditions this time of year?

Adam
05-12-08, 06:16 PM
No idea mate, but fook that lol

Ive sorted a weeks insurance out through DayInsure.com, so i can use it from tomorrow, till next saturday. Cost £54.
So ive got this week(busy all weekend), and next saturday to fit the xe and pray to god it runs before Donny next sunday lol lol

Rate, quick update.
Set about chucking my new Scorpion exhaust on about 9pm on Sat night lol, luckily it went straight on, so all was good. Sounds cool :)

Did Donny on sunday as most people know. Had a wicked time, car went superbly throughout the day, not one issue.

Still need to sort my full vids, but that will have to wait as im a bit busy atm.

As for where this leaves me engine wise, who knows lol
The XE is still sitting, fully built on a engine stand and ready to go.....
Also got a set of NTR throttle bodies and a xe inlet.

But there is something about suprising people when you tell them its only got a baby 120hp 1600 fitted :thumb: lol

So im going see out xmas & new year and have more of a think in '09.
But a change of rear suspension is definently on the list, could do with a 2nd hand pair of avo rear coilovers if anyone knows of any going for sale.

I also now have a rear roll cage to fit which i collected last night, thanks to Ebay..... :)

Adam

Yup
Just a rear one atm, but it has the brackets on to add the door bars to, so can make it a full cage if i see any front sections for sale. :)

Nice. Now you're a track addict you'll want more..

Adam
16-12-08, 08:24 PM
The more track days i do, the more i want a 100% track car lol lol

With a bit of work it could be much quicker round track, as the shell itself has the potential to shed a LOT of weight (elec winds/rcl/alarm/remote boot pop/full glass/heavy front brakes/dash&door speakers etc )
Plenty of things

So i would have to start a new policy, hence the cost.
They want more than it costs to insure the nova to cover the standard astra... lol

Which part is that for? The bit that runs across the bottom of the door?

I will need erm, the door bars, and the top bars that run around the top of the door frame and then down to the floor.
So thats door bars x2, and a front cage?

Iain

Imagine how it felt when we were asked by the owner of a Ferrari 355 thats used in some Ferrari only race series what CP's 1.4 Nova had under the bonnet! There is something special about those moments that make all the abuse from the big block homos worthwhile. :thumb:

lol

Got back home from work just and got both front wheels off to investigate a very light knock i keep getting over bumps. And it seems the drivers side track end/steering arm must of got damaged in the off :(, as there is a clear knock when you lever the arm up and down. It sounds more central to the car though, and not at the trackrod outer balljoint.
So probably best just fit a new rack, considering the track ends will be seized to fook.

Also noticed BOTH front brake discs are cracked like fook  Loads of tiny hair cracks all over them. How does a 1600 put enough heat into the brakes to crack a 284mm disc? May have to look into some better replacement discs instead of motor factor specials.

Ad good find with the cage mate!

As for brakes lol you'll be surprised, Ive done the same in few of my old cars, it's all about how much you use them, and if they are as you say sh1t lol

Chris Slator (16v) he toasted my old cars rear drums at donny! they were poring with smoke after he cam into the pit lol

Adam
19-12-08, 04:32 PM
Cheers Simps :)

Scott-I did notice that all my brakes were smoking slightly everytime i came in the pits after each session... lol
I think what may have done the cracks is when i slid off though, the brakes would of been red hot, and the discs were then submerged in wet mud and gravel lol ..... So that could explain it.

Right, not much of an update.
But picked up some eccentric top mounts and a nova gsi servo/mc off Olly H the other night.
So set ahead fitting the topmounts today. Not many pics because my hands were too cold to hold the camera steady lol
Coilover off and in bits, old/new top mount
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v86/Nova-crew/DSCN1178Medium.jpg
Spring choice lol
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v86/Nova-crew/DSCN1179Medium.jpg
Top mount loosely fitted (all went on without spacers which suprised me etc)
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v86/Nova-crew/DSCN1180Medium.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v86/Nova-crew/DSCN1182Medium.jpg

And then all removed again due to the fact i cant tighten the top mount upper nut(piston spins after you turn the nut one turn), and because the nuts so big i cant get to the flats on the piston to hold it..... lol

So ive removed the coilovers for now and refitted my old Koni's.

The plan is to drill out the top nut threads, and then use that as a spacer/to keep the piston central, then just use a washer and a nyloc nut to hold everything. That way i should be able get to the flats to stop the piston spinning whilst tightening the nut up :)

Did have a quick test fit though, and the avos drop much much lower with these top mounts on, on there lowest with 7" springs the wing lip is pretty much touching the tyre..... :thumb:

have you driven it with the top mounts on?

I fitted mine, and couldn't get it to drive nicely using eye for the castor. Am i just being special?

Adam
03-01-09, 08:07 PM
No i couldn't drive it as i could only get the topmount nut on by one turn, so there was like an inch of play in the top mount........

Ste L
03-01-09, 08:08 PM
read the post, he said he's had to remove them,. due to not being abel to tighten the top bolt

edit - dam you Adam, you beat me to it lol

Iain

I fitted mine, and couldn't get it to drive nicely using eye for the castor. Am i just being special?

Just give it some positive castor, put them both in the same position and get it to a wheel alignment place. They can tell you what castor, camber, toe it's running and should be able to adjust it for you.

Adam
03-01-09, 08:15 PM
This is the plan, to re-use the std Avo nuts, so i can get access to the piston flat to stop it from spinning.

I never had this problem with my Avo's & top mounts mate. The weight of the car on the ground shou;d be ok to tighten/loosen.

With the eccentrics you should have...

spring - spring cup - lower collar - mount - upper collar - 2 avo nuts.

certain thats how I have mine.

corsakid
03-01-09, 08:25 PM
gary did his to day with no problem what so ever did olly supply the top mount nuts.collars if so i belive that spax have different pitvh thread to avo lead etc as i had to tell them i had spax as they were different collars/nuts needed

Adam

Thats the plan as in my diagram above.....
But the upper collar is threaded itself, so you wouldn't need the 2 avo nuts.
My problem being the upper collar wont screw down the piston thread itself... So im going have to drill it out and just use it as a spacer, and then use the 2 avo nuts as normal..

Corsakid-Yes mate, there the ones off Olly's Spax setup, so that may explain why they dont screw on right.

corsakid
03-01-09, 08:29 PM
i am almost certain spax have different pitch thread etc to leada avo's ie yours so would explain why they lock up after one turn

Adam
03-01-09, 08:30 PM
That would explain it. So drilling them out and then just sliding it down the threads is my only option.
It should be fine :)

corsakid
03-01-09, 08:31 PM
or just pay a few quid for the correct collars lol

Adam
03-01-09, 08:33 PM
Nah, wheres me drill :D lol

The Simps
03-01-09, 08:44 PM
my collars aren't threaded, they're just drill to slide over as spacers, there's no need for them to be threaded imo. they're are there as a spacer.

I drilled mine squiffy 1st time round so had to get some new ones from rally design, was only a few quid tho. Got a machine shop to quickly drill them for me for a drink.

Adam
03-01-09, 08:46 PM
I'll just drill them slightly to get rid of the threads. If it fcuks them then i'll buy some new,Lol.

Adam
04-01-09, 05:58 PM
Got back from work today and cracked on with removing the insert threads.

Right, back at it. And all went well, fitting wise.
Old Koni setup off, and coilover built up with 313lb 7" spring on, complete with alloy topmount
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v86/Nova-crew/DSCN1195Medium.jpg
Both sides done, and top mount set roughly to "11 o clock and 1 o clock"
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v86/Nova-crew/DSCN1197Medium.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v86/Nova-crew/DSCN1196Medium.jpg
(Ignore the 2nd set of holes, they were to sort the camber on the old suspension)

And who said Avo's dont go low
This is with an inch of thread left (jack is still holding the car up slightly as i couldn't remove it from under the crossmember, so its not fully down in this pic lol )
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v86/Nova-crew/DSCN1199Medium.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v86/Nova-crew/DSCN1198Medium.jpg

And then went for a drive and thats where troubles started, pmsl.
Basically it drives/handles shockingly. The steering wheel is no longer straight, the car dives harshly to the left when you accelerate hard(nearly put me into a kerb), and it just seems to skip about all over the road. You can also feel every bump in the road through the front end of the car, and you seem to be fighting the steering to keep it in a straight line. It also seems easier to turn the steering wheel left, than right, if you get me.

Is a lot of that going to be down to the tracking needing setting up? Both topmounts look to be mounted in the same position.
Or Overstiff springs(altho i ran the same springs on std topmounts and they weren't half as bad as they are atm)

Think i'll be having a slow, calm drive to work tomorrow morning lol

No idea mate, couldn't even see into the arch to check lol
Was just interested in how far they'd come down.
Ive got them wound right the way up now anyways, the spring platform is sitting about 2 inches or two above the tyre :thumb:

Where abouts do you have your topmounts sitting? Did you hack the edge of the turret???

Si-Its a 100k miles shell mate that gets driven hard daily, with an original engine bay,so bits of rust like that dont really bother me ;)
When the engines out sometime i'll see what i can do. With it being white, any spots of rust always look terrible anyways.

My top mounts are the old TAS style with the circlip on the other side, so there like yours but upside down. This means for me, no turret mods were required.

Surely having the topmounts like that will have given you a lot of camber, I have mine off centre the other way slightly to try and save tyres a bit.

Any pics Lee?
You mean yours are more central, and back in the turret hole?

When i fitted my eccentric top mount son my coilovers, i had the exact same problems fitting them int he exact same place... would pull tot he left when you accelerated and right when you deccelerated... Removed them as i didn't have the time to get it tracked up, plus i got quoted £80+ for camber caster and toe :(

Like nathan, i fitted mine the other way round so the smaller extrusion was on show and ment i had better adjustment :)

Yep, but running them the other way is an arguement i cant be arsed with!! lol lol

I might give them a spin round tomorrow and try them more central.

I have used exactly opposite holes on the top mounts and have them at about 11 o'clock and 1 o'clock looking from the front of the car. Similar distance across to where you extra holes in the top mounts are for camber.

Mine mount the other way up though so have more adjustment.

Right, so yours are back but at the other side of the turret holes. Basically giving neutral camber?

Yes, gives me about 1 degree negative camber, where you have them will be about 3 degrees I reckon.

I had my avos that low when i first got them on, awful drive! Used to skip on everybump that wasnt there, so bad i would be bounced off my seat and couldnt control the clutch on some roads lol

Would them up so that the piston had some travel and they were spot on!

And hes drove Pod/Billing etc and back, from Scotland lol

lol

Doesnt handle very well like that either! Have no grip to put your foot down because it skips on the bumps and just spins

You're running a 7" spring aswell remember where as the normal ones are 8". So you're really running with the platform right at the bottom if you have an inch left.

Adam

Aye true.
I didnt drive them that low this afternoon though :)

Have just wound the platform right up near the top of the thread to see if they drive any better when i try again tomorrow. With the spring wound up to about an inch and half from the top of the thread the car sits at the same height it used to with the platform 3/4s down on the standard top mounts lol

Mine drives nice wound right down. Doesnt skip at all.

It'll be your tracking being out mate. As you lower and move the car it all changes.

The stronge poundage will give a firm ride. Maybe you need to play around with the shock firmness settings too? I had too on mine.

You have the "shorter kit" though don't you Benn, pm me details :thumb:

Very true.

Adam

Must be because you have the uber low Gaz setup Benn??

Simps-Yeah the tracking is no doubt a mile out causing the steering issues. The dampers are set almost fully soft

Yeah must be. Forgot about that sorry.

I found them bouncy running soft and used to have it halfway. I was running 300s but obviously had the extra weight. Any reason why you've gone for the 313s?

Adam
11-01-09, 10:29 PM
Just thought id chuck them on, as im going big block asap.
Have some 300s, and 250s spare i could try.

Might be worth adjusting the damper setting and seeing if that helps then :)

I'd put the standard 250s back on to be honest and save the 313s for next time you're on track.

Right, had a play with the top mounts just after work. And set them to this position which should be pretty much no camber/castor.....

As even as i could get them within the turret.

And it drives miles better :wtf:
Steering wheel is still off slightly so the tracking needs doing, but it doesnt pull you across the road now, and it just feels like its driving miles straighter than it did before (doesnt feel like each wheel is fighting each other). Also noticed before, that the drivers wheel had a lot of neg camber with the mounts in the previous position (enough to easily see by eye), it now has none (that i can see by eye).
So i might just get the tracking setup now, and see what if any camber/castor its running, and leave it at that...... :wtf:
