Adam
29-09-09, 07:44 PM
Do.
TBH once the tax is ran out its going sit for 6months at least?
In that time i will get sick of seeing it sitting there, and just see it as money sitting on my parents drive....

Iain
29-09-09, 07:58 PM
You could always re-tax it you chump. Get on Messenger so I can annoy you about your silly decisions.

Adam
29-09-09, 08:00 PM
Theres no point re-taxing, i dont want to use it in ice/snow......

Southie
29-09-09, 08:09 PM
So are you getting shut of your nova then? Are you rolling roading still on the 10th?? I noticed your not on here as much so have you bought a metro or something lol

Don't leave your knowledge is needed :)

Spudly
29-09-09, 08:11 PM
Dont break it you plum youve put faaaar too much blood sweat and tears into it to break it all, unless youre gonna build another one?

Adam
29-09-09, 08:22 PM
NBC- Is the RR day still open for booking?? I might make an appearence if i can still pay now, its a bit of a drive for me tho!!
And yeah im hardly on here anymore tbh, usually about 5-10mins a night. Just been way too busy recently with other things in life, basically sorting my flat, working, having a few nights out with a certain girl etc.

Spud, i'll see how it goes mate, no real plans to build another tbh.
Think i just need "get the nova-thing" back, but i have zero motivation to spend time on a 25 yr old vauxhall atm :(
This week is the 1st time ive even unlocked the nova since Combe a month ago lol

Benn
29-09-09, 08:23 PM
Ah dude, use it over the winter you'll still be smiling in the new year...

Southie
29-09-09, 09:39 PM
For the rolling road just send Riggy a tenner deposit and pay on the day. How far is it from you? Must be a good couple of hours I'd have thought.

Women are the route of all evil lol apart from Lynz lol

Spend time here more often, your a font of knowledge especially on the baby xe. Your wip is where I learnt most of my build from :)

As long as ive got net access i will be about on here!!! Just no where near as much as i was a few years back lol lol
Posts per day is down to 11 now! Used to be 14+ at one point when i was unemployed lol

I just come on here now to update this thread, read any WIPs im interested in and have a quick look through the for sale forums, and do some moderating if it aint been done by one of the other mods :thumb:
Im glad my WIP thread proved helpful :)

And definently on for Shakespeare this Saturday, just need two new rubber mounts for the middle exhaust box :thumb:
Shame you cant make it Scott.
Is it pretty much same as Pod? Do you need a helmet?? Show Driving license???

Paul
30-09-09, 05:52 PM
I MAY be there in the Nova....

Adam
30-09-09, 05:54 PM

scott.parker
30-09-09, 05:58 PM
All you need is £10 to get in £20 for as many runs as you can do in a day 11-4.50 the strip open i think? And enough fuel to do them lol

Helmet for cars over 100mph across the line, or running under 11 seconds.
you need your driving license, photo card mainly, but take both in case.

They are very helpful and friendly up there.

WARNING though, it's got MEGA popular of late, and as there is an event on it WILL be busy, so get there early as possible if i were you.

Scott

Adam
30-09-09, 06:00 PM
Hmm, might be worth me taking a helmet then, just incase

scott.parker
30-09-09, 06:04 PM
i didn't the time before last (13.9's etc) as i didn't think i would need it, but was crossing the line at over 103mph i took one a few weeks back, i saw some nob laughing at me when i was sat in the que, he didn't laugh when on that very first run i did 13.5 at 105mph! lol

Adam
30-09-09, 06:09 PM
Might take one, might best run at pod was @ 99.4mph.....

Mazz
30-09-09, 06:15 PM
Ad, if you break it i'll come up to Stokie-land a bitch slap you....!

scott.parker
30-09-09, 06:18 PM
You will need it then, as i guaranty you'll get into 100mph with at least 14.2's here, it's IMO a better track that gets better results, and it's used by APIRA/NSRA top fuel drags, so it's not some crappy track and don't count like some say.
Unless it's at pod it don't count! lol

Adam
30-09-09, 06:25 PM
Will take one then, just incase.

LOL @ Mazz lol

Got the old exhaust back on, just had a quick drive to make sure all is well.
All seemed good, managed get the exhaust fitting better too so it no longer taps the transmission tunnel!!

Parked the car back up after a 20mile drive and the entire sump is soaked in oil
Obviously not the sump gasket then. Thinking crank seal or oil cooler sandwich plate now.
Ffs really starting to lose patience with this car  :(

Just noticed it says on the Shakey site "Cars with Any fluid leaks will not be allowed onto the strip"
Looks like thats out the window then lollol

Take a rag, i just clean mine between each run! lol

Benn
01-10-09, 07:42 PM
They never checked when we went...

scott.parker
01-10-09, 07:47 PM
They check the track for spots, as if it's leaking enough they pick you out and check the car, as they clean the track after you run, so if theres cars leaking loads it just slows the day down.

Benn
01-10-09, 07:53 PM
Oh do they? When we did the speed and show day there there was no cleaning or anything..

Adam
01-10-09, 07:54 PM
If im sitting for any length of time with the engine running you will see oil dripping off the sump...

Might go scrappy tomorrow see if i can find a oil filter thread so i can bin the oil cooler... As thats 3-4 less seals for oil to leak from! lol lol

General Baxter
01-10-09, 08:02 PM
just a normal leaky redtop then lol

scott.parker
01-10-09, 08:05 PM
Oh do they? When we did the speed and show day there there was no cleaning or anything..

Benn it's allot more organized now, and they get quite allot of people there regular now, as it's such good value compared to pod.

Benn
01-10-09, 08:27 PM
Ah shame, its was good how they did it then..lol
25 for as many runs as you want.. That's bloody good.

scott.parker
01-10-09, 08:31 PM
£30 now mate, as £10 in, £20 RWYB lol use to be cheap eh!

Benn
01-10-09, 08:32 PM
Is that still run as much as you like tho?

Adam
01-10-09, 08:34 PM
Yeah

02-10-09, 06:11 PM
Pussy! Mine was leaking like that at Billing lol

MK999
02-10-09, 06:13 PM
My novas first trip out was to work, as there was no buses at the time i agreed to work, and i drove it with oil smoking off the manifold and a bottle behind the drivers seat to top it up at the end lol

Adam
02-10-09, 06:23 PM
Pussy! Mine was leaking like that at Billing lol
lol lol
Would probably be fine if i kept stopping every 5-10miles and topping it up lol

ChrisGsi has just told me tomorrows weather aint looking good anyways and i cant make Sunday due to ****e work

AlexW
02-10-09, 06:39 PM
Shame about the leak, you can get the threaded bit you need from vauxhall btw.

Bad news if its the crank oil seals tho, whatever end it is its not easy :(

Adam
02-10-09, 06:46 PM
The worst area i can see is the timing belt end, so if its a crank seal its that one. The back of the fly looks completely dry.

Going get the drivers wheel off tomorrow and have a closer look.

Benn
02-10-09, 06:46 PM
Fitting the thread bit in the oil filter is a 5min job as very easy.

AlexW
02-10-09, 06:51 PM
Thats what i was thinking benn, get it done adam and get to that drag strip lol

Adam
02-10-09, 06:51 PM
Might take a trip up vaux tomorrow then to order one.

Or is a small block 8v one the same?????

Aw-I aint going Shakey now, few others are going on Sunday which i cant make, and its give to** weather for tomorrow :(

Benn
02-10-09, 06:53 PM
I know its an 8v but cant remember anything else about it... I got my years ago.

AlexW
02-10-09, 06:55 PM
Is it not the same as a smallblock? Theres a partnumber on here somwhere, even a few threads about it, your net up to searching adam? Or is your net too limited?

Adam
04-10-09, 07:55 PM
The nova is back in my good books :thumb:  lol

Benn

Yay!

MK999
04-10-09, 07:56 PM
Stopped leaking/B road run? lol

Adam
04-10-09, 07:58 PM
Changed the sandwich plate gasket, and the oil filter.
And its still leaking, just its not dripping on the floor now, just the sump is a bit damp, no real problem as long as it doesnt get any worse.

And yes, good ole' B road run, with a mates VTS, good times
Gave the car a good seeing to, apparently exhaust was banging/popping like fook on gear changes too lol
Theres nothing like waking the countryside up ;)

Mazz
04-10-09, 08:02 PM

Don't have things planned that you'd always wanted to do with the car but haven't had chance to while it's in use? Not sure what it's like for you as you can always go without it for x amount of days but theres loads of stuff I wish I could do to my daily that I just don't have the time for.

General Baxter
04-10-09, 08:32 PM
iv just reliased something, im going up with 2 xe novas im going to get left behind :(

Theres LOADS of things id do if i had end-less fund's lol
LET, Atb, full respray to name a few lol

But its just money that i would prefer to spend on other things atm lol
Ive got the nova to pretty much where i wanted it, it can do road/track/quarter's and so far as been reliable as fook..., can start it up from cold after sitting for a month and it idles perfectly etc
The reliability is something i think id lose if i fitted bodies etc...... Being a std engine means when it goes bang its only going to be cheap to fix too.....

Baxter, Tina's nova is a 1.6 8v iirc. In no rush anyway, when i say tootle, i mean tootle lol

MK999
04-10-09, 08:45 PM
Doesn't have to be endless funds stuff though, I have a new shell coming to replace mine (next sat all going well :)) and that will be getting a tidied up inside painted all the same colour properly (carefully rattle canned I mean lol) and also all the underneath/suspension etc cleaned up/painted. Just time consuming stuff rather than expensive. I dunno how that would relate to yours as above is mostly fart assing about making it look good rather than performance based... custom/lightweight dash maybe?

Adam
04-10-09, 08:48 PM
Could do with another bonnet or bonnet respray as the laquer is peeling in places.
Was looking at f/g bonnets earlier, but would probably just matt black rattle can it
Not sure if it will look ok though, i still want the car looking tidy.

Ive also got a spare set of early bumpers, but they are white so need spraying. Hurricane grey may be making a return, but i would also need to do the side strips....

Also just remembered ive still got the flat Mo's in my old bedroom, could get on with actually refurbing them i suppose lol lol

General Baxter

Plenty to do over winter then :thumb: MO's ftw :d Why not spend the time prepping it up etc and either drop it into a bodyshop to spray up (can't say I've ever used them but blowing a gun over one panel can't cost too much? about £80 maybe?) or have a bash yourself whether it be a borrowed gun or cans, it's a bit of a gamble I guess but if you funk it up, sand it all back and get it done elsewhere, if you don't well you'll be saving yourself money in future too because apparently you can paint alright lol

Adam
04-10-09, 09:14 PM
Im not using it over the winter.

Benn
04-10-09, 09:15 PM
Why? (if its cost thats fine i get that)

Adam
04-10-09, 09:16 PM
Road salt and crap, cost of re-taxing it, and its just not a car id want to use over winter on icy roads! lol

AlexW
04-10-09, 09:52 PM
Dont blame you for not using it over the winter adam.

Would be a shame to break it after such a short time of the car. Do some things with it, park it up under a car cover, maybe do the little things now and then and by next year your forget that you ever thought about breaking it in the first place.

alistairolsen
07-10-09, 02:51 PM
some slightly softer springs and comfy seats and Id drive it all winter.

I did 10k miles on B road in floods and **** when i had my corsa one winter lmao

Adam
07-10-09, 03:28 PM
Heyup Al, been a while.

If it was fully interior'd etc then i would probably drive it through winter, but nah cba.

Looking for a Astra mk4 coupe or a ph1 172 for a daily :thumb:

Slight difference. Only trouble with the Renault is you might be tempted to get rid of the Nova. 172 is a track day toy with a warranty (when they were sold).

peester

you gonna take a test drive in each one dude??
astra 4's are cracking value..

I just want a nice looking daily driver :thumb:

Ive not ruled out a Z-Let Coupe :thumb:

Peester, not been in a mk4 coupe, nor driven one yet. Been a passenger in a 172 though, well impressed. But i get what CG is saying about making me want get rid of the nova, its about as quick as a xe nova, handles v.well, but is comfy and has modern day toys.... lol

Also been looking at Golf GTI 1.8T's

SRimon
07-10-09, 08:18 PM
Astra MK4's are sooo much better than any 90's Vauxhall!

Adam
07-10-09, 08:25 PM
Yeah.
A set of coilovers and some nice 17s/18s and they can look very very nice too

And a 1800 16v Coupe also will cost me less to insure than my current 1.7D £300 Astra lol

Astra mk4 SRi hatch would make most sense IMO. ZLETs are problematic tbh. Mostly cheaply sourced parts, chocolate pistons etc.

Quick update on the Astra.
Apologies for the toss pics, cam phone....

Not a sight i was hoping to see after owning it for 3days lol
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v86/Nova-crew/Photo194Medium.jpg

Nice water, i mean oil
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v86/Nova-crew/Photo195Medium.jpg

Good to see(well not really good), but no1 piston clean, confirming h/g failure thoughts...
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v86/Nova-crew/Photo196Medium.jpg

Can see the gasket had blown on no.1 between cylinder and water way
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v86/Nova-crew/Photo198Medium.jpg

New gasket in placehttp://img.photobucket.com/albums/v86/Nova-crew/Photo199Medium.jpg

Head is now back on and torqued down, cambelts back on.
Just go to plug everything back in, fit aux belt, and refill all the fluids. Hopefully all will be well.

Did you know it had gone when you bought it? :(

Adam
14-11-09, 11:59 PM
It hadnt gone mate tbh. My dad followed me home when i bought it, no smoke etc at all. Coolant level was fine.... Three days later you cant see the back of the car due to the smoke from the exhaust and its done 2L of coolant in 7miles.....

Previous owner said it had sat for a while, so i guess it just let go when i gave it a bit down the A50! lol lol

Adam
15-11-09, 12:27 AM
Yup.
It should be spot on now.
As the cambelt kit/waterpump is brand new too(well a few month old)

You can tell its done fook all miles recently by the condition of the waterpump/cambelt pullys etc

You dont mess about do you Adam, good going and i hope thats the end of the engine bother for you, lucky you can get your sleeves rolled up and do the gasket yourself rather than have to get some garage to do it for you.

Had to laugh about saying you couldnt see the back of the car do to the crap from the exhaust i bet it seemed normal at first till you realised 'hang on i dont drive a weasel anymore' lol

Nick J
15-11-09, 12:31 PM

Had to laugh about saying you couldnt see the back of the car do to the crap from the exhaust i bet it seemed normal at first till you realised 'hang on i dont drive a weasel anymore' lol Yeah, i thought "Fook im putting some fuel/boost through this thing", then "oh bollocks, its a clean petrol lollollollollol"

Its all done now, all back together, sat nervously in the drivers seat with the key in my hand (did i tighten that cambelt tensioner? lol lol)
Turned key, fired up first go, fcuking get in

No tapping, no smoke, no leaks. Good job i changed the oil/filter because when i drained it the oil was white :eek:

Just done 35mile and coolant level has not moved in the tank. The rough idle has also gone, runs smooth as fook again and it seems to pull better too (not suprising seeing as now all 4cyls are burning petrol/air and not petrol/air/water lol.
Temperature gauge sits just under half, and doesnt move

Well pleased :d
Now i can start spending on some proper bits for it! Coilovers ftw :thumb:

Spud-Lucky its a job i can do myself, would probably be £300+ in a garage at a guess.
Its cost me £54 to sort. Ive sold the cd player that came in the car originally for £60, so im still £6 up

Just to prove ive still got the nova, i touched it today lol
First job was drying the car out, the inside was pretty much soaked in damp.

Anyway,
Bought a set of rear polycarbs off Lionel, so started fitting them today with the weather being scorching at 5.5c.
Yep the novas still there
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v86/Nova-crew/B571%20HTV%20WIP/Picture001.jpg

Rear window removed (5min job!)

Polycarbs
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v86/Nova-crew/B571%20HTV%20WIP/Picture004.jpg

Rear fitted into seal, and into the boot. (Need cleaning and polishing)

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v86/Nova-crew/B571%20HTV%20WIP/Picture008.jpg

I then set about fitting the sides but when attempting to remove the window, the force needed was starting to bend the window surrounds(theyve been in for 25year so its not suprising they are in there well....)
Tempted to leave the sides tbh, dont want to risk knackering the chrome window surrounds lol

Whilst i was motivated to do a bit i also got some parts of the cage covered in padding.

Got a bit bored too and remove the silver pin stripe from the side
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v86/Nova-crew/B571%20HTV%20WIP/Picture003.jpg

Also got the battery and ecu refitted and turned the key, fired up first go :d
Was a bit tappy at first, but it aint been turned over for about 2 and a half months, so that didnt suprise me....

Will probably have a better go at the rear sides sometime this week, although the weight difference between glass and polycarb wasnt huge tbh.....

Looking forward to Oulton Park now!! Just need two new rear tyres, and i could do with some shorter rear coilover springs, the rear sits was too high for my liking.

That is all for now.

Iain

Get the sides in you slacker!

Adam
17-01-10, 06:25 PM
I dont want to bend my wikidi bo' chrome window surrounds....
Especially after seeing that wanted thread! lol

Its the surround, it was sticking in the window hole but the glass was comming out of the surround if you get me, hence why it was bending!

Will have another go sometime this week.

Bit more work done today :d
Cracked on with the side polycarbs.
Original window out, 2min job.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v86/Nova-crew/B571%20HTV%20WIP/Picture2004.jpg

I then realised why they were being difficult to remove, it seems the early chrome window surrounds have a bonding strip around the window hole. My mk2 ones didnt have this

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v86/Nova-crew/B571%20HTV%20WIP/Picture2010.jpg

Just need some new rear tyres now and im sorted for Oulton!!
Thats if i can afford to tax it!!! lol

Might need bring a 12v heater with me, for some reason these polycarbs seem to steam up a lot quicker than glass, and the cars heaters are pap and dont really help to clear the windows!!!!! Not what you want on track.

Iain
23-01-10, 07:55 PM
Yeah the polys do steam up a bit more but I found they eventually clear if you leave the heaters on.

Adam
23-01-10, 07:59 PM
Yes but thats if you have working heaters lol lol

My heaters work but ive got none of the venting/ducting behind the dash.
So i just sort of get warm air blowing around the inside of the dashboard... lol

Im getting an urge to try some GTE bumpers on it too, hmmm

Iain
23-01-10, 08:00 PM
Obvious solution is to ditch the dash, win win!

Adam
23-01-10, 08:02 PM
I was tempted just cut the passenger side off it today because i got annoyed at it after tw***ing my head on it when trying reconnect the vent/temp control cables

Couldnt find my hacksaw though :(

Dont think id ever remove the whole thing though, will look messy IMO

My window surrounds and any others I've seen had this strip, I've never taken any out of a car though, so obviously it was all non sticky, I thought it was just a one sided bond to the surrounds tbh.

And all fitted
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v86/Nova-crew/Mk4%20Astra/Picture2007.jpg

Me thinks i need some new front brakes, discs are scored and grooved to fook!!!

Onto the rears
The rear dampers on a mk4 are a proper simple design, just held on with two bolts! no pissing about rounding the piston flat off with some mole grips! lol
Original dampers, i touched the n/s and it fell in bits.. Lol
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v86/Nova-crew/Mk4%20Astra/Picture2009.jpg

Removed, hmm, that may explain the knocking when going over roadhumps, bush is sha**ed!
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v86/Nova-crew/Mk4%20Astra/Picture2010.jpg

The rear springs are soo long that i had to use spring compressors to remove them! Compare old to new, as you do

Crap pic sorry, but you get the idea!
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v86/Nova-crew/Mk4%20Astra/Picture2015.jpg

I had to wind the fronts up because i couldnt turn the wheel at first without the tyre rubbing the arch liner lol

So settled with it being quite low, but still driveable. Will try and get some proper pics tomorrow.
Took it for a drive and im VERY happy with these "cheap" coilovers. Yes the ride is harder, but the springs are a higher poundage so no suprise, but it still handles great, but now looks well too!! :)
The knock over bumps has gone too! Two birds, one stone.....
Its still perfectly comfortable for a daily driver even with them set low, so im well pleased and would recommend them to anyone!! :) :) Awesome for £150!

SRi is quite hard even as standard so the before/after difference isnt huge...

Bit of an update just before Oulton park on Saturday.

Picked up two new 195/45/15 Proxes off JohnH, cheers mate.
Got them fitted yesterday.

Also taxed the car yesterday, meaning i could take it out!
Brakes were binding quite badly and the clutch pedal was heavy as fook. Luckily the brakes cleaned up nicely and seem fine, and the clutch is better after it had a bit of use....

So i think im sorted for Oulton now bar checking oil/coolant levels etc :) :)

08-02-10, 04:05 PM
Right, after Oulton ive got some nova motivation back lol
Well pleased with how well it went round Oulton.
But ive got quite bored with the current look of it. :tard:

So have a few plans.
-Need some aftermarket management so i can get the tb's on that ive had up my loft for over a year. lol
Probably going to remove the firewall in the bay too.

-Gte/Sr front bumper, respray standard rear to match front
-Drop the rear because it looks gay atm, thinking of swapping back to a seperate spring/shock setup on the back....
-F/g Bonnet or lighten the standard one
-Sort out the Comp Mo's ive had for a year and half  Thinking body/gold colour for them.
-Swapping to an internal cavvy/astra shifter so i can get the exhaust fitting better.

Does anyone know how my side strips are held on btw? Clips or stuck? If they are stuck on they will be coming off too :thumb:

Iain

Woo motivation, good man. I woudn't waste my time trying to lighten a standard bonnet again, it's still quite heavy tbh.

Side strips, pop off a doorcard and check you lazy bugger.

Adam
08-02-10, 04:27 PM
Skinny bumper is going, for now at least.

Good thinking Iain, will have to check next time im up there.
What internal shifter have you used btw??

Ive still got my mk3 astra that i can rape for bits, so i assume the shifter in that should work?

Mike
08-02-10, 04:50 PM
Ive got a pair of internal shifters here if you need one mate.

Adam
08-02-10, 04:52 PM
Following a msn convo with Lion, as long as the shifter rod is straight after its been cut/welded, it should work fine. So i'll take the one out the astra :)

Paul
08-02-10, 05:51 PM
side strips are stuck on, why you thinking of going back to telescopic's?

Adam
08-02-10, 05:53 PM
I want some shorter springs, but cant adjust my coilovers.
So might just get some low "normal" springs and use them instead.

That way means im not going having problems with the Mo's rubbing the coilover spring, as they are wider than my current wheels....

Paul
08-02-10, 05:55 PM

Benn
08-02-10, 09:45 PM
Why cant you drop the back if its coilovered?

Adam
08-02-10, 09:56 PM
The adjuster platforms have seized solid. So the only way to change the height is guesswork with £60 a time springs....... :(

Benn
08-02-10, 09:58 PM
Un-seize them, dip them in wd40/penetrating fluid then use a funk off big wrench to move them for wards and back wards till they free off.

Then coat the adjuster and threads in grease or copper slip...

If you'll be running shorter springs it wont matter cause the new adjuster will be higher up.

But cutting it carefully and you should be ok. Do try what i said up there ^ grips and a hammer after dipping.

John
08-02-10, 10:05 PM
yeah if you grind em back you'll just have a little round mark to touch up. Nobby is corect though, they are actually rivets. if you grind too far the other end of the rivet will drop out and leave a hole.

Adam
08-02-10, 10:06 PM
If i can free off the adjusters then i dont want/need new springs..... I'll just drop them right down...

If i cant free the adjusters then i'll just buy some shorter springs and leave the adjusters where they are.

I ended up using a hacksaw to get the adjustors off my old Avo's. Just cut through them to roughly where the thread is on the body and then when you try and turn the adjustor with something it will just open up and snap off.

If its anything like mine you will be left with the thread off the adjustor on the threads on the coilover body and they just scrape out with a screwdriver.

THats my last option :(

I got satisfaction from cutting them as they were the worst thing I ever bought for my car, even worse than the LET

Ad, as i also said mate you should be able to free them off with wd soaking etc, and i ALSO looked at your side strips on Saturday and said oh yours are clipped on! lol deff'o..

Glad your back into it, told you you would be..

So they are deffo clipped Scott, yeah you had a good look at them but dont think you reached a decision???? Or did you? lol

Good to hear you have the bug again mate.

Plans for the next phase sound good, leave the bump strips on IMO, you'll never remove the rivets without making the panel look wavey (I made that mistake on my mk1)

Adam
09-02-10, 07:06 PM
If i leave them though they arent going to match the bumpers, colour wise
Unless i attempt to paint them

craig green
09-02-10, 07:07 PM
Attempt then... Seriously I wouldnt remove the rivets.

MK999
09-02-10, 07:08 PM
smooth them and paint them gloss if you're gonna get artistic with it, bit different lol

scott.parker
09-02-10, 07:13 PM
100% they are clipped on and not stuck on, you could un clip them and paint them same as bumpers though, so thats a bonus IMO.

Adam
09-02-10, 07:28 PM
Cool, hopefully i can spray them to match the bumpers then.

Small update today, ripped the rear coilovers off, left them soak for a few hours in oil, but theres no chance they are moving. The platform now has a big groove in it where ive hammered fcuk out of it lol
So its new spring time, but unsure whether get some short coilover springs, or just get some 90mil "normal" springs and use my bare coilovers as dampers... That will give me more clearance and is less likely to bottom the damper out.

For reference, this is the rear end with 60mil springs fitted, IMO it drops my rear end about 30mil due to the weight, or lack of lol
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v86/Nova-crew/B571%20HTV%20WIP/Photo0226.jpg

So if i got with a normal spring setup i will need 80/90mil springs.

Also ripped the shifter out the astra, as you can see its kinked near the box end, useable for an internal shifter setup?

Cut it off! Just do it carefully and you wont damage the threads.

MK999
09-02-10, 07:32 PM
Go careful when getting springs for a normal seperate shock/spring setup as I tried to guess a height with mine and it ended up rather low on the back, they were 100mm so your guess is about right, but if they're high poundage they really will drop it 80mm rather than the 40-50 or whatever you're looking for as the difference between compressed and free length will be smaller.

scott.parker
09-02-10, 07:36 PM
Well if the plat forms are not shifting cut them off and buy new platforms etc..

As for shifter, you need to measure it and cut it to take the kink out of it, look in Dar, or Olly Hewitt's WIP's, or PM Dar.

Scott

Adam

Cut it off! Just do it carefully and you wont damage the threads. I have now drilled out the grub screws so MAY have damaged the threads that platforms are sitting on, and i would need to screw the new platforms lower than that bit of thread. So probably will just go for a seperate spring setup.

Mk-I need some custom wound springs of about 200poundage rate, and 80/90mil drop height to hopefully drop my rear end 60/70mm :thumb:

Hmm, saying that though, new platforms is a cheaper option. I dont want the dampers bottomed out though when i lower it down for the height i want!! AVOs are toss for anything more than about 40mil lol

MK999
09-02-10, 07:54 PM
That sounds about right :thumb: Although fairly low poundage, don't forget they will need to be higher than your coilover springs due to the mechanical advantage of the wheel over the inboard position.

Lee H
09-02-10, 08:18 PM
The Avo coilover bodies are too long so if you ran seperate springs they would bottom out at about 70mm. I got them for mine and sent the whole rear setup back in exchange for seperate shocks and springs and the normal Avo rear dampers are shorter than the coilover ones. Pretty toss.

that'll be about 4.5-5 inch free length/height..

Benn

With a short spring the platform will be above the damage tho.. 200lbs a bit soft aint it.. I run 300lbs.

he only needs short springs if he can't free the adjusters, otherwise he's just gonna wind it down.

MK999
09-02-10, 09:31 PM
But he says they wont move...

he's going down in height, so either winding it down or shorter springs will achieve that, or he'll try a seperate spring/shock setup with a reasonably well "known" drop although that last bit I don't quite get as he can have 3 guesses with coilover springs before it gets more expensive than customs!

Benn
09-02-10, 09:33 PM
lol i know, having a shorter spring will mean the platform would be higher than now...

MK999
09-02-10, 09:42 PM
lol i know, having a shorter spring will mean the platform would be higher than now...

Platform stays in the same place, as it's seized solid, and the shorter spring sits on top, dropping the car down...

Adam
10-02-10, 08:14 PM
What have i started here lol

Both of you are right.
Benn, Mk means if i leave the adjusters where they are it wont matter, a shorter spring will just make the car sit lower than it does now, just due to the spring length....

But yes if i fit new platforms and shorter springs i will be able wind the adjuster up above the thread damage........

Oh and 200lb aint really soft tbh, standard avo are 175, and thats for an interior'd nova, theres NO weight at all in my rear end, and it currently handles v.v well on these springs. I do have some 7" springs spare, but they are 420lb rate!!!!!!

It doesnt matter now because i went mental with a hacksaw, pics on the way lol

Good to see you've still got the MK1 - sounds like it's heading for a rebirth into a proper track slag (although I notice you've still got some interior knocking about :gay:)

About your side strips, I know there's 4 years between the reg's (B vs F) , but would it not be the sames as Oli H's?, if so they're just stuck on with the usual GM double-sided gunk:

Got bored of the "sleeper" look, so removed the rubstrips ready for my white door squares for my race number, and removed the badges and the "NO INTERIOR LEFT..." sticker

Yeah i thought about this today, but you wouldn't wanna buy new springs at say 90quid, for say one inch off. That's 90 to lower it 1inch more. Where as you'd wanna say but 2-3 inch shorter springs then adjust to suit. But yes and good lad!

Adam
10-02-10, 08:32 PM
Ahh yes, doorcards and a dash lol
For what they weigh, they might as well stay! lol

No other plans for the engine tbh, unless i come across a cheap set of cams!!!

If was going to start properly spending, engine wise, id just fit a LET

Yeah Benn, get exactly what you mean. Im fitting new platforms :)

Anyway, todays tiny update, its a good job i gave up with the hammer method because those platforms were never going to move!!!
So i sawed them off.

One done
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v86/Nova-crew/B571%20HTV%20WIP/Photo0227.jpg

Both done
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v86/Nova-crew/B571%20HTV%20WIP/Photo0228.jpg

The thread off the platforms was left seized to the coilover,i.e. inside the platforms is now smooth where they came away from the thread :eek:
No wd40/oil was going shift that lol

Going get the wire wheel on the grinder out tomorrrow and get the threads back nice and shiny, and order two new platforms from Avo. Im hoping they screw down ok. Might even shove the tiny 7" springs on and just run them adjusted quite high... The only reason i had to remove those springs was due to the damper bottoming out, which wont be as much of a problem if i can now adjust the height :thumb:

Christ they've rusted badly! I had to take mine apart and paint copper slip on the insides of the adjuster, as all it was doing was pushing it out of the threads.. Can you paint the rest of the threads?

Nice hacking tho..lol

MK999
10-02-10, 09:36 PM
I still don't get Benn's explanation lol Nicely sorted though, hacksaw/angle grinder fits all bolts lol

Adam
10-02-10, 09:41 PM
Benn means if i fit new adjusters with new springs i can get a lot more "use" out of the springs, without them being stuck at a fixed height.

Yeah the hacking went well, only marked the thread in one bit and that will clean off with the wire wheel imo.
Yeah im going paint all the exposed threads.

MK999
10-02-10, 09:46 PM
ahhh he was on about going for new adjusters the whole time, makes sense now, but I did say you'd only need new springs if you can't move them... nvm, obviously just missed each other in the middle somewhere there lol

troops to stop them rusting get a motorbike tube in cover the threads, seen it done on a rally car..looked to have worked fine..i,d use a warm wax on the adjuster once set to allow it to run through the threads..........worth a try i,d say:thumb:

Ordered the new platforms directly from Avo yesterday, dont know if theyve turned up yet though because i send all my post to my parents place lol

Cost £15.88 :)

Adam
12-02-10, 07:17 PM
Awesome service from AVO, ordered yesterday at 4pm, on the doorstep at 9am this morning!!!!
Two new platforms, with NYLON grub screws, i think someone mentioned the seizing problems to them previously lol :d
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v86/Nova-crew/B571%20HTV%20WIP/Photo0230.jpg

They are a newer design, and as such wouldnt fit on mine until i took a grinder to the top mount plate on the piston rod to take a mil or two off it!
No issue though, easy job.
Got the threads cleaned up and greased too, and they screwed right the way down to the bottom of the thread
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v86/Nova-crew/B571%20HTV%20WIP/Photo0233.jpg

Got the springs on, im trying the 7" 400lb springs, and having the platform wound up, see how they feel on a light rear end.....
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v86/Nova-crew/B571%20HTV%20WIP/Photo0237.jpg

Just to show how toss Avos are if you want a decent drop, with the platforms just over half way down with these springs, ive got literally inch-2inch damper travel before they are bottomed out! Thats before they are fitted too.....
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v86/Nova-crew/B571%20HTV%20WIP/Photo0238.jpg

So i'll set them to the height i want and see how much travel i have, with such stiff springs i cant see there being much "drop" in the spring when the cars weights on them. Hope they arent too stiff tho.

Also, got my new discs out the loft that ive had for 11months lol
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v86/Nova-crew/B571%20HTV%20WIP/Photo0235.jpg

Getting some M1144 pads for them too seeing as the brakes on the car atm are annihilated lol

That is all for now, Avos back on tomorrow and see how it sits :)
Oh, and to anyone with seized coilovers, just cut the platform off and fit new ones, so much easier tbh!!!

Ali-284 Fiat's mate.

Got the coilovers back on today.
Did the obligatory "i wonder how low it'll go" pics lol
This is as low as my avo's can physically go, sitting on the cut down bumpstops

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v86/Nova-crew/B571%20HTV%20WIP/newadjustersfitted002Medium.jpg

The adjusters still have 2inches to go in those pics /\ Lol
This is the height id run it at if i still had enough damper travel, sits the car level, nice and low.

Wound them back up and settled with this height

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v86/Nova-crew/B571%20HTV%20WIP/newadjustersfitted006Medium.jpg

Looks quite good imo :)

Compared to how it was sitting last weekend.....
http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k155/asa_037/Oulton%20Park%206%20Feb%202010/IMGP3964.jpg

And a problem i really need to solve, hopefully when i get the internal shifter in i can mod and fit my Magnex system and get it sitting tight to the car. Current system sits stupidly low as it doesnt sit in the tunnel...
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v86/Nova-crew/B571%20HTV%20WIP/newadjustersfitted007Medium.jpg

So im going cut the front silencer out of the magnex system, and weld a straight tube where the original shifter currently sits..... And then join it to the SBD manifold. :)

Got a new thermostat too because the current one must be a bit fooked and is running the enigne too cold, temp barely gets out the blue!!!!!

That is all for now.

Nice one ad, still loving the retro colour!

Although not as low as i've seen some Avo's go - think Wilsons GSi.
