looking to build a race spec 1.6 16v from corsa gsi/sport, any ideas of what power can be ahieved for around ?1000 (not including engine).
and also is it true that headwork will put this engine up to around 150bhp as i swear i read this in TV. would love to achieve around 200 bhp form this engine
the C16XE has a very good head as standard, inlet side of things needs sorting first, mantzel do a manifold or theres carbs/throttle bodies
Dont throttle bodies take these straight to 150BHP without any other mods??
Your going to need more money than ?1000 to achive 200bhp and lots more again to build a 'race' engine. If you can find a set then I think throttle bodies or twin webbers are your best bet.
The basic tapered throttle body kit from SBD runs in at ?1,577.75+VAT. I think the QED throttle bodies are cheaper.
Oli would be your man for advice though.
Oli, Lee303, Broster on mig have great examples of tuned x/c16xe's.
?1000 tho isn't going to get you a race engine.
You could go the cheaper way off bike throttle bodies, megasquirt ecu, make a loom etc.
Pocket the std pistons, fit some lairy cams.
You could probably do that for ?1000.
And would probably see 150/160bhp easily.
Just swapping the top section of inlet trunking for a "power box" can give a 25bhp gain.

There is also the fact that before Tuning an engine, you need to ensure its in good nick (bores not fecked etc), so if your after a good engine Id get the bottom end bulletproof first... bye bye a few hundred of that budget lol
To get 200+ reliably, you are looking at ?7-8k
140 ish could be achieved with ?1000, but as Stu said, you should go through the standard internals and replace any worn parts (rings and stem seals are common on these)
Mine runs approx 180, and that is after I have changed everything internally and spent a shed load more on bits from SBD etc...

yea sorry wrong section woops, yea im just after general info on that engine to see if its worth doing the conversion as i can imagine the insurance wuldnt be do bad on the standard engine in a nova. im sure i read that headwork gives 150bhp but anyway would blueprinting,headwork,t45s and cams be ideal, also is the bottom end the same as the 8v cos i can get a cheap lightened flywheel. also msg to will f - what is your 0-60 and 1/4 mile times on yours
pistons NEED to be pocketed to use cams.. and u may aswell uprate them.. then u'l need up rated rods.. thats most of the budget gone..
o-60 time is errelavent as no to cars are the same.. wheel/tyre size, weight, drivers reaction times etc..

?1000 won't get you far towards a 'race spec' engine as already mentioned. If you really do want a race spec 1.6 16v then I'd recommend using that grand to buy a spare engine (with plenty of change), put it on an engine stand and start the build from there. Otherwise just take the advice listed above and get a mantzel style inlet and some cams should see 140ish bhp.
BTW 'Blueprinting' is definately not what ur after, this is the method of achieving the optimum dimensions from within the tolerance of engine components (i.e group N) With 'race spec' you're after replacing components with the best available and going beyond factory tolerances, often sacrificing longevity for outright power.
To sum up then....
Assuming that the labour is free/very cheap...
Rings, shells etc ?120
Re-hone ?40
Lighten and balance ?60
Flywheel lightening ?80
Head rebuild with everyting ?200-300
Mantzel style inlet ?300
Raise rev limit ?200
Which is approx ?1000
Then get a decent (sbd) exhaust manifold and 2.5" system ?3-400 New

the thing with these 1.6 16v engines there that good its hard to say were to stop becuse every little thing changed or modded aids it reliabilty or ups the pony power!! C16xe's rule. (please dont start a small blocks vs big block rant)
