... to clean the lower half of the engine bay (not around the electricals) with the 'softer' tip of a pressure washer (the attachment thats ok for washing the car with) or am I just being daft/far too lazy?

I guess it would be ok but you'd have to be careful of rust otherwise you might make some new holes.

I'd consider investing in a decent priced steam cleaner... they work very well on grubby engine bays.

if you want to clean it a steam cleaner is the better option. also, keep the engine running.
