View Full Version : headunits with built in screens
has anyone got a headunit with fold out screen there mk2 nova ?? i want 1 but was looking at the stereo space and im not sure if the screen will foul the dash when it slides out. i know you can get screens with multi angle but im not sure if this would still give a good enough angle to view the screen ?? i dont want one stuck somewhere on the dash either or in the vents as i want the dash to look original

I've done one before, had to space the unit like fook to get it at a decent angle, looks good when its out, looks **** when its in, best bet is a seperate screen mounted somewhere else, i.e, sunvisors!
yeah i thought as much, prob go the sunvisor route as i can get them trimmed leather to match the seats. cheers pal

do ya know how to get them wired up there okay? if your feeling really fancy re locate the h/unit facia somewhere else as well.
ive seen that done, with the face plate in the visor ?? dunno where to put it tho without it looking tacky or bodged

An old mate of mine had one in his gsi about 6 years ago, he fitted it in place of the dash vents because it was different at the time. Only took a few hours to work it out.
yeah but i dont like them just stuck there, plus if some twocer looks thru your window, sees youve got a screen its pretty obvious youve got something else there

i dont know how much room is on the mk 2 dash, but would a double din fit? a lad at work just fitted a smart one in his scooby, double din touch-screen bolt in jobbie. just a thought...
but i want the dash to remain standard so NO cutting out holes/losing vents :wall:

Re loacting stuff is easy, you need to be able to solder and ideally have a second source of music, i.e changer or i pod, oh and lots of telephone cable.
Looks good tho when done proper...
but where could it go and look factory fit ??

Dont! go proper stealth.
Standard h/unit in the din position just so it looks original, screen in one headrest, h/unit fascia in the other
headrest, would be fun changing tracks lol could put it in the sunvisor ?? or in the drivers doorcard

Problem with drivers door card is that its constantly opening, puts alot of strain on the wires, i know a sunvisor opens as well, but its not as much distance...
yeah i see what your saying, surely if enough slack was on the cable it should be ok. how many cores are needed ??

depends usually between 12 and 16, look at the pins on your fascia and you'll see!
good idea lol i could try and get some flat multicore cable from work, its designed to be used on cranes and movable booms so should be ok - ill look into it since im wanting the doorcards trimmed in leather anyway

Sounds like a plan! lol
Either that stuff or 2 lengths of phone cable is pretty good.
lol i was wondering about this some time back , but didnt know if it would fit so i bought this one

plus it gone down from ?500 to ?350 now lol
yeah, ill practice on an old headunit ive got lying around - is just a simple case of soldering the cable as a extension of the pins (if ya get me lol)

Its an okay unit but there are a few things to consider, the screen is about the same as a mobile phone and if you think of the postioning, who wants to crane there neck to watch a film the same size as a phone???
tbh i wont be using that screen as ill be having screens in th evisors (thats my choice now) and i think the face is gonna sit in the doorcard
any other recomendations for headunits luke ?? around the ?300 mark ideally

Depends what ya want really, the best suggestion is the Alpine 9857R, with a Ipod input plus is a manual flip down not a motorised one so no issues there!
Retails around the ?200 mark on car audio security.
Just remember that you cant really use the cd drive in it.
Get a separate DVD player and run the audio into the h/unit.
why cant i use the CD drive ??

Cos it gets a bit complicated cos the cd drive only eject and will let you insert new discs when the flap is down so you'd have to find a way of operating the pin that senses it without the facsia on.
i never thought of that, makes sense really. im either gonna have a ps2 or dvd player anyway so now a major concern i suppose - just that i wanted to add to the set-up as and when i could afford it rather than buying it all in 1 go

Yeah, the alternative is to connect a disc changer to the unit as running the audio via a ps2 or seperate dvd is gonna sounds rubbish. Best bet is to connect an ipod
