i am starting my 1300 sr engine re-build and i am hoping to have a nippy, reliable engine for when i am 17. I am putting a new oil pump on, head skimmed, headgasket, valve stem oil seals, 4 branch manifold, peco exhaust system, weber 32 twin choke carb and a k&n filter. how much power will i get roughly? after a year of driving i am wanting to put a set of twin 40's on and a higlift cam and other mods. What should i do to get a fair bit of power out of it? whats the most common engine mods to the sr's? can i change the heads etc?

I think you would be around standard. You may want to concider new rings and bore hone or a rebore if its looking worn. Rings/ pistons try http://www.allittmotorsport.co.uk/ I dont think you will find cheaper. Dont forget the cam will be worn too.

The GTE\GSI\SRi heads have bigger valves and bettert ports.

you could change the head to a 1.2, to up the compression abit, not really worth it, better off getting a port and polished head or a blydenstien one if you can find one. might be worth changing the cam as well to something like an AST1/2. Theres currently a AST1 on ebay for 125 quid buy it now. Other plans sound good.

cheers, i am going to put new piston rings, big end bearings, valve stem oil seals and get a bit of headwork. I dont want to do too much as insurance wil be a problem when i am 17. I am going to put a weber 32/34 carb, possibly a fast road cam, K&N and a 4 branch. should be quick enough.

Very tired 1300 block
skimmed and re-conned 1300 head
32/34 weber
Piper 285 cam
Standard exhaust
Standard air filter

85 BHP @ 5000rpm

Thats what I had last year, without a cam you're not going to gain much.

You'll probably get about 80bhp on a std cam.
The weber twin choke doesn't increase power too much, just improves throttle response etc.

you could get it bored out & fit some 1200 pistons.
1300 engine number, 1400 high compression engine. result: maybe 85hp but loads more torque. I did it years ago & it flew & was totally reliable.
then tune it when you can.
