This chap i know seems 2 think that just because he has a "turbo" that his R5 would piss all over a xe. Please post comments so i can show him this thread lol:thumb:

maybe he's right...
Pod opens soon, get ur cars down there and see that its also down to tyres (grip) driver abilities (nerves, reaction) etc etc - all stuff that matters.

115-120ish iirc.

yep, but it is really easy to wind up the boost on them which is all well and good until they explode. What does it matter? Why not play pub top trumps? Take the car to a RR, get a print out, weigh them and work it out from there, and the loser can defend himself by saying that the other wimped out of racing round McDonalds car park, so he is obviously better.

The early ones with a carb are about 115bhp as Jack said.
Which a xe would kill
Sure the later ones(ph2) with Injection are more like 160bhp tho, bigger turbo etc. A much closer match for a xe, iirc the cars weigh quite a bit more than novas tho.

There quite easily tuned tho, bigger turbo etc.

The R5 is made of tin foil, spit, and chewing gum, therefore, its much lighter so will win.

what do standard/tuned let novas run then?

ph2 injection LOL.

A tuned R5 would & could whoop an XE Nova. But depending on the race. Over a 1/4 mile the R5 would have it. If it was a 10 minute race to the next motorway junction, only a Renault driving fool would hold an R5 flat out for that length of time, & that is what makes them crap.

A 1.0 Metro would go further & faster flat out than a 5.

My mates R5 was running just shy of 300bhp. I know a thing or 2 about them.

is it standard? if so an ex(150bhp) would have because my old GTE(110bhp) could keep up with them.

Ditto, apart from the motorway race bit :p

I have an R5 which is running just shy of 180bhp, as long as you look after them and don't go too wild with the boost they are quick little cars! Everyone will bang on about the headgaskets going - down to stupidity imo, if you whack the boost up without taking precautions what do you expect!

Is it a R5 GT Turbo, or a R5 Turbo?

As Cornish said, they can be very reliable cars, if they are standard or modified by someone who knows what they're doing, not winding the boost out on a driveway in a council estate.

fact of the matter is the R5 lump does not like full throttle for anymore than 30 seconds or so. Giving it full beans in 5th, you will watch the temp gauge move like the second hand on a clock.

Fcuk me I'd forgotten how R5s were as ugly as sin lol

Still, fun little cars. Not for me though.

Yeah fun for about 30 seconds until it over heats or develops some mystery wiring fault.

More French than a french thing unfortunately.

They are awesome for 1/4 miles but you dont see many at track days. Proof of my theory!

my mates r5 whuch is mainly standard aprt from a 200sx turbo and has had a full rebuild 15,000 miles ago struggled to keep up with my baby XE

Like i said, if you are going to drive it erraticaly then you need to take the necessary precautions! I would imagine most engines using 20 year old technology would not appreciate full chat for any length of time.

far as im ware no R5 came with injection they were all carb turbos, which are ****e, never ever seen a fast 1.4 R5, all the ones at pod that run silly times are 1.7 injection volvo engines which are about 700 times better.

Sure i was reading somewhere, and it said injection, 160bhp.

Perhaps that was some rally version or something that wasn't sold.

Are you thinking of the mid rear R5 turbos and turbo 2s with the wide arches?

I think bb tuning made an injection conversion for them.

I used to have one, the engine was standard and even with 115bhp it could set off it just spun 1 wheel. so id say if it doesnt have a diff in it there useless.lol

I had a phase 1 R5 and it was a load of w**k. could hardly keep up with a 106 gti. It looked the bo**ocks but what a mistake buying that, my xe would leave it for dead. you need to spend a serious amout of cash to make a R5 slightly reliable and quik. Think if you want a fast R5 put a clio sport engine in it.
