Found on another forum.

What happens when you fly your 727-200 into a hailstorm?

On 10th August 2006, the aircraft was en route from Calgary to Minneapolis. Whilst in the process of climbing to altitude, it hit a thunderstorm between 30,000 - 35,000 feet. About half the landing lights were destroyed by the ensuing hail, and although the nose has been severely compromised, the radar remained intact and internal cabin pressure was upheld.

This aircraft is operated by Capital Cargo, and returned to service the following month!

Saw this on the news. pilot was giving the old "oh yeah, you just remember your training and it gets you through it"

Yeah right. At which point during training did they throw balls of ice at you at 400mph.

lmfao, like they do with frozen chickens and windscreens? Thats another story though! Engines were unharmed, but then when developing them they have various things like nuts and bolts thrown at them :D

Read some comments from the pilot on another forum, he seems a little pass? about the whole thing now but I daresay he must have let a windy pop loose at the time.

When I flew to Prestwick, the co-pilot did the return journey - he was also the local Flight Safety Officer. Took longer coming home than going up as he was flying around all the clouds lol

has anyone else ever looked up when a 727 flew over (I live near the eastmids flightpath) and thought that thing is at least 30 years old & made of thin aluminium & glue?

erm - if its flyiong horrizontal and the hail is falling down how the feck are there impact marks on the underside?

Was he flying upside down or summut?

Depends on angle of attack, and if he's going along at 400mph he cold catch some even if its falling - bear in mind the ice is suspended in the cloud as well before falling
