I picked up a lovely little flame red K red SiDi off Novarally other week and was only going to be a temporary little run about but I'm incapable of leaving anything alone for 5 minutes so everybody tells me so am tidying it up and hopefully will make a great car out of it.

My plans are to make it a GSi replicar - main reason; theres no other kits for the nova which I like enough to want to get and can't be botherd customising a kit to fit it. Will be fitting a white vinyl roof, this is just one big white sticker which will cover the entire roof similar to what you'll find on a mini... I've never seen it done on a nova before so hopefully I'll be the first to have done this. Other plans include a GTE wrap round spoiler instead of the GSi one as I feel it suits the shape and lines better, the side skirts will be white as will the wheels and then to respray the car in metalic purple!

The car already has fitted to it a full set of GTE seats including front door cards so no real interior work will be done... might get a nice gear knob, handbrake sleeve with some new gators and tax disk holder but that'll be all really.

So far I've orderd the spoiler, skirts and also some -50mm lowering springs which should hopefully turn up any day now. I've stripped out the interior ready for welding to start early next week and have also made a start on the rust problem the car seems to have and have even made a little video with a friend of mine staring the car on YouTube!!

Heres my little prototype drawing... the wheels aren't what I'll be using but the mk2 astra gte wheels are quite difficult to draw... don't think i'll be going for rear disks ether! lol

Heres the only photos I have of the car at the moment which Collin took for me before I went to pick it up

And now the interiotrs out it looks a little something like this

Made a start on getting the rust off those back arches
http://img366.imageshack.us/img366/2251/0116161741qe0.jpg

And have also started referbishing my old astra wheels to look the part on the nova.... should look sweet lowerd 50mm on these 14's!

This is the paint which will be going on the car once the rust has been sorted

And can't forget me introducing the car to the world of youtube! lol

as to your question in the video that second "air box" is just a resonator you wanna get it looking like this
http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/sclurgess/td/DSCN1624.jpg?t=1169038322
it will come on boost much quicker and you'll get a very impressive turbo sound, plus hunt down the guide for turning up the fuel and boost you wont regret it. of course you could just buy my 1.7 lump that has been converted to go in a nova and has already been played with if you want some proper power

what havbe you removed to make it look like that and any chanse of a guide?? also, don't you need a filter on that inlet? don't wanna go getting **** sucked into the engine now do we and if I'm gonna go playing with some real diesel power I'll take the 2 litre cdti out a vectra!

White mirrors as well Simon.

sim0ng
18-01-07, 05:17 PM
you think Matt? I'll get a spare pair of mirror covers and see which I like best...

burgo, thanks for the advice, but I may just leave the engine standard for the time being and I don't see why the cdti engine wouldn't fit as it looks no bigger then a redtop... would just need some custom mounts made up and more then likely custom chafts too but am sure its possible!

as I said elsewhere, my skirts came this morning and have been down to vauxhall to get a new set of clips... 16 for around ?3 so quite a good deal compared to prices they normally tell me! thought I'd go for all new ones and keep the 3 I found already attached to the skirts incase I brake one of the new ones...

Have made a start on painting them white already but the paint I've chosen is really really crap and runs all over the place! Its meant to be white stone guard but I dont think I'm going to ever use it again, once its dry I'm going to rub it all off and go with my original idea of white hammerite! lol

heres the skirts how they arrived this morning. will take another picture once theyre white! :)

whatever you do dont go for cdti lump and i know it would physically fit but the wiring would be a nightmare

Matt2107
18-01-07, 05:30 PM
Make sure you get smooth hammerite in a can.
I'd also recommend plastic primer from Halfords first.
The hammerite goes on fine over the top (just done some centre caps) although I'm not sure if its 100% neccessary.

Suggested the white mirrors as i noticed a new style mini with white roof and white mirrors.

and a chrome badge on the back reading Turbo'D

sim0ng
18-01-07, 05:38 PM
I already have a can of smooth white hammerite, was the main reason I was going to use it in the first place but thought it'd look **** so thought i'd use the proper stuff and that looks crap :(

my get some chrome badges to go on... can you get chrome nova badges? my car didn't come with any badges on it or I may go for Opel Corsa badges instead or maybe Irmscher Corsa??? and slap on an opel badge instead but then that'll make my wheel centre caps I spent ages going will be wrong aswell as the VIN plate and the V5 document! ah who cares... I'll just put corsa badges on and se if i can pull some D Turbo badges off something

The main filter is in the inlet manifold.

A CDTi probably weighs more than an XE anyway, so would handle like a V6 with a porcelain toilet strapped on the bonnet!

plans are a bit odd, mainly the white vinyl roof. I thought it was old gimmers that used them on old Talbot's.

I think it will peel off aswell, wont the roof gutters get in the way of making a good job of it?

Fit a FMIC & you can fit the 'Turbo intercooler' badge from a Cav!

sim0ng
18-01-07, 05:52 PM
fit a fender guitar?! lol (FMIC = femder music instrument cooperation)

doesn't the 1.7 TD have an intercooler with it? how big is it and is it okay to paint intercoolers? spray it silver or black and have it hanging out the front bumper if its big enough? lol

the vinyl am using is the same stuff as whats put on roofs of minis and will go from the gutters on ether side then the whole length of the roof and it shouldn't just peel off unless people with little fiddeley fingers attack it! lay spray the clear cote over the roof aswell as the rest of the car which should help to stop it ever lifting??

yes the 1.7 does have an intercooler but its to small imo, get ya self a front mount and paint it black so it doesnt stand out as much

whats that intercooler off? I'd like one about that size but would fit it in the bottom grille... how hard are they to plumb in on the 1.5?

Matt, do you take any halusinajenics to cause you to be thinking about midgets stod on ladders picking at my roof? lol

Sim, I was going to fit a 1.7 isuzu turbo engine but some said that the chassis can break, did you make something to your chassis? and what type of gearbox do you have?

sim0ng

you asking me? My Nova came with the 1.5 Isuzu engine already fitted.... I have no idea what gearbox I have, but I think I may end up replacing it as the linkage for 5th is worn and would probably just be easier and cheaper to replace the box.

Breaking a chassis ? Very strange people you talk to lol

Putting a 1.7 in a Nova isn't easy:
RH-side engine mount is different, (maybe you can put the 1.5 mount(including the drivebelt setup) on the 1.7...don't know as i haven't touched a 1.7 yet)

the turbo is bigger, therefore the alternator sits lower and you'll have to modify both support and alternator(with a grinder) to clear the chassis. (and you have to use an alternator support from a corsa/astra/cav)

The 1.7TD's have an intercooler, try fitting that in a nova with a diesel radiator in the way.

You'll probably have to put the 1.5 flywheel and starter on the 1.7 (different gearbox, flywheel & starter)

and grind a bit off(the block) to fit the gearlinkage. These two bumps are in the way:

have done a few things now but haven't taken pics and some bits is quite hard to picture...

welding underneath has been done, also had a new track rod end fitted, also fitted my laguna splitter and then went to fit the lowering springs and with me being a cheap ******* I decided to make my own axel stands after finding mine have magically disappeard! (can't belive i'm trusting sitting a car on my welding! lol) went to try and get the bolts out which hold the shock onto the rear axel and couldn't get the flippin things out! not even entirely sure as of which way to turn them ether lol feel like such a woman! lol Just bought myself a Tneg breaker bar... thought I wouldn't be as stingey on that and just had a look at my order thing online which says it should arrive in the morning... geat... the 1 day I work away from home its due to arrive! will try and get the rears done at least when I come home though and will also have another rummage around for my proper axel stands as I don't trust my welding as far as I can throw it even though i've done the drop test on them and only little bits of paint chipped off instead of the metal cracking and the support arms falling off so I must be getting better at it which is a bit of a mirical!

I'm STILL waiting on my GTE spoiler to arrive and am getitng quite mad now and if its not here by friday I'll be opening a dispute and reporting them to ebay as its just taking the piss, bought it on the 11th (Jan) Had one email back from them saying they would be posting it and I think that was on the 15th and all my other emails to them have been completely ignored or thats what it seems as I've had no responce from them at all and am getting very peed off! Only little thing is though, I accidentally left feedback for them instead of somebody else who I bought something off as my mouse is playing up and keeps jumping about i clicked the wrong item, left the feedback and then noticed after it was for the spoiler and not the film I'd bought so hopefully ebay will see through that.

Also picked myself up a mini-disc head unit so I can finally get a bit of music inside the car so quite happy about that.

Will get some nice pics soon and glad you liked my vid... :)

Glad your getting on well.

It sucks when people don't send you things... I'm having a load of trouble with my posty at the minute.. think he's tea-leafing my parcels.

Interesting choice with the mini-disk head unit... I've got a portable one that I don't use any more with a load of mini disks. Looking to sell that though as I bought it a few years ago just before mp3's really took off.

I've had mini discs since they came out really and have hundreds of them and personally prefer them over cd's but onfortunatley they never really took off... is kinda like the old betamax and vhs storey with the two! vhs sucked compared with betamax but it wasn't to be!

I have a little update...

Made a start on lowering my car the other day, did the rears a peice of pie, then came the front... had to search all over the place to try and find a strong enough point to jack the car from and then to let it down onto an axel stand in another strong point... wasn't too easy to do imo that but managed to find a good strong spot where the underside had been welded up and new bit of steel had been put in. hooked my spring compressors over the coils and retardedly did the same thing to both of them which was turn them the wrong way! I've not buggerd the damn compressors and can't seem to get them loose so the cars slammed at the back and like a rollerscate at the front! lol

I also went over to my folks earlier to pick up my Astra wheels so decided to fir them then had to stick the car in their driveway to inflate one of the tyres as it has gone a little soft and looks really good already I think! :) Once the fronts lowerd should look even better still then I'll get round to painting the wheels white and the little holes in them black!

You did take the front struts off the car before trying to remove the springs didn't you?

sim0ng
02-02-07, 09:06 PM
yes, i undid the 2 18mm bolts holding the bottom of the suspension strut to the hub, then loosend the nut on the top of the strut about half a turn with a 19mm swan neck spanner and a 9mm socket... i then removed the 2 13mm bolts holding the top of the strut to the car but then i cocked up once i had them out and I turned the compressors the wrong way on the spring and locked the top of each up and can't free them up...

sim0ng
06-02-07, 03:09 PM
50mm really doesn't look like a very big drop at all! the original springs were shorter then the new ones I put on aswell but it has actiually lowerd it but only about 1 inch rather then 2 but the rear looks quite nice but I still don't think thats a 2 inch drop ether and for some funny reason it looks lower on the drivers side... may be down to a worn damper but it does give a firm smooth ride and whilst I was at it I thought I'd pop over my rents and pickup my astra wheels but may be swapping them with novalicious for his tsw alpines so will hold back on painting them white for now...

True that! :)

I still use MD even now, awesome format for handling the abuse from being thrown in flight cases / bouncing around in cars lol

I'm on my 2nd MD HU (old as now, but does job - in nova) Still have my MD deck in my seperates (8/9 years on and going strong) Would still have my walkman MD if some crack head? Hadn't broken into my Ford Mondog (runaround at time) and took it as well as my Sony active black HU and tape converter lol

Damn... I used that fella to record digital MD - MD too!

But yeah, good plans for car dude, vinyl roof - intertesting *strokes chin* awesome vids too Youtube FTW :thumb:

I was expecting it to be a fair bit lower, would live the look of the arches resting on the wheels but guess I'll only really get that with coilovers which I don't really want and are too expencive but it handels really nice! just need to get the tracking done now as I've noticed the steering wheel doesn't sit centeral since I've had the new track rod end fitted.

I still have my old MD walkman... I've had that a fair while now seems weired to think how old it is, it seems like its quite new yet i got it about 8 years ago now! still works but a couple of the screws on the lid have somehow come loose and dropped out but the ones from a glasses repair kit fit nicely and good as new again and quite often listen to it when I go for walks and the MD player is the only part of my old stero which still works! lol

I've got a nice new angle grinder with adjustable speed on it so thats going to make tackleing this surface rust much more fun! just gotta wait for the snow to go now as theres no way am i doing that out in the snow... have been out building snow men with my boys today and feel crap now...

I NOW HAVE 1 RUST FREE ARCH!

still needs a little filling and shaping in a few places but I just sprayed over a quick coat of primer to cover the exposed metal away from the eliments or it would probably start rusting away again before ya knew it!
