Hello everyone, I'm back!

Well it's been a while since I posted anything on here and even longer since I've actually done anything with Nova but the time has come for me to pull my thumb out of my **** and get going.

The plan is to build me a 1300 SR track toy that I can have some fun with. I know it won't have breath taking speed but that doesn't mean it won't be fun. Please don't tell me to fit a bigger engine, I know it will be faster but I have my reasons for sticking with the 1300 and these will become clear in due course.

So here is how the car stands at the moment:

1300 SR bottom end, bored out to 1330 (ish)
1200 Head with some DIY porting
AST2 Kent Cam
Weber 32/34 Carb
Janspeed 4-1 Manifold
Mongoose Stainles Steel Exhaust system
F13CR gearbox with the standard FD
GSi Suspension (standard)
Polly Bushes
GTE Calipers
Ferrodo Pads
Drilled & Grooved Disks (nothing fancy but they do the job)
Quick Steering Rack

These are the parts I have already bought and will be fitting this week:
Weber DCOE 40s
K&N filters
Facet Fuel pump
Filter king regulator
ARP Bolts
High power ignition coil (still not sure about fitting this, opinions appreciated)
OMEX limiter with shift light
and a 4.18 FD

As far as the handeling goes, I will be stitch welding the engine bay while the engine is out and I will be looking for some decent suspension (probably Spax or Koni) once the engine is sorted. Strut braces will be fitted front & rear and choice of tyres currently stands with Yoko A048Rs.

Anyway, work will be starting tomorrow so I will hopefully have some progress pictures for you by Tuesday.

Sounds nice.

Why not get a 1400 bottom end tho? New rod bolts/shells etc.
So you have more cc to begin with.

Edit-Sorry, thought that was future plans, not as it stands currently,Lol.

What chokes/jets will you be running on your 40s?

Adam
14-01-07, 08:22 PM
I didn't say fit a new engine, i saw:- 1300 SR bottom end, bored out to 1330 (ish)

And thought that was future plans, so i suggested starting with a 1400 bottom end.
But then realised it said current spec.

I really don't know about chokes and jets yet. The carbs I bought came off a 1300 Nova rally car so I'm guessing they are somewhere near the mark anyway. I'll get it all setup on a rolling road once the engine is back in.

Good stuff, carbs should at least run if they came off a similar engine :)

What a crap start to the week. I went to start work on the car on Monday as planned only to find that my Dad had set the alarm last time he moved it, which was about three weeks ago. The car needed to be moved to get in the garage and I had a flat battery and to really top it all off, I had fogotten about the fact that I had no steering wheel! All in all, I was going to have a bit of challenge getting the Nova in the garage.

Anyway, I got the battery on charge on monday, engine fired today, and managed to get the steering wheel fitted about an hour ago. No where near as productive I'd hoped but heres's a picture as promised.

It's probably a good thing that I'm planning on taking the dash out because it looks filthy under that flash.

Next update should have some more interesting pics for you, promise.

At last! Progress!

It's been a busy week so far so I have't had much time to work on the car in the evenings and I'm travelling to Birmingham tomorrow afternoon and not coming home until Friday. So the challenge for today was to get as much work done on the car as possible, making make sure I get it back to a state where I can get the car out of the garage so my dad can work on his while I'm away.

Lets so how I did.

Bonnet off, most ancillaries disconnected, this is how things were this morning
http://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e230/Miko_Gethinsky/IMG_0025.jpg

Front up on axle stands, tie bars & drive shafts off and chains securely attached.
http://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e230/Miko_Gethinsky/IMG_0028.jpg

Heres my engine bay, it's a bit grubby following a blown headgasket but generally it's all quite solid.
http://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e230/Miko_Gethinsky/IMG_0034.jpg

Wheels & tie bars back on, I now have me a rolling chassis (should keep my dad happy anyway).
http://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e230/Miko_Gethinsky/IMG_0032.jpg

And heres my little baby. I should be starting work on it next week when I get back from Birmingham
http://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e230/Miko_Gethinsky/IMG_0033.jpg

All in all I'm quite pleased with my self. I know it's not a massive step but with the engine out at least I'm committed to the project.

When lowering engine and gearbox, it's usually a good idea to disconnect the speedo cable first.

I got back from Birmingham last night, thank god lol

Down to the garage when I woke up this afternoon and started work on the engine. Again, not any huge advances but I got about as far as I had expected.

So heres how my day went.

Split the engine and box and managed to get the engine up on my new engine stand (Heavy Duty Stand from Machine Mart, only cost ?35 :D ).
Believe it or not there's a MkII Escort under all that wood on the right!

I call this Gearbox Corner :)
http://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e230/Miko_Gethinsky/IMG_0038.jpg

Those of you that met me at Llandow or Cheltenham will probably remember the loud ratlling/tapping noise coming from the engine, well I think I've found the cause. Below is a picture of number 2 piston which shows evidence of the valves touching the piston.
http://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e230/Miko_Gethinsky/IMG_0040_comments.jpg

I hate this part! I was almost knocked out by flying springs twice!
http://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e230/Miko_Gethinsky/IMG_0043.jpg

The Monkey Island approach to removing collets :)
http://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e230/Miko_Gethinsky/IMG_0045_comments.jpg

Unfortunatly this is where work has stopped as once I had removed all the springs I started to take the valves out and my theory about the touching valves was reinforced. When removing the valves from cylinders 1 & 2 I had to knock them through with a drill bit and a hammer! Verdict, bent valve stems :(

I'm not completely sure why this happened although I do have some ideas. I'll spend a bit more time looking at things tomorrow and my Dad's mate from Swansea Road Autos is coming down to have a look on Monday. I'm guessing he'll take it all away with him as it's quite possible the stem guides will be ****ed and need replacing. I may see if I can get the pistons pocketed as well if it will stop it happening again.

Plan for tomorrow: Fit the 4.18FD to my gearbox.

The stand is brilliant, I'm dead chuffed with it actually.

Heres a link to the machine mart advert for it. The price is actually ?46.95 (I was getting the inc. VAT and Exc. VAT prices mixed up) but still a bargain in my opinion.

Yeah, I'm from Bridgend so GMF are my local motor factors.

Good luck with the engine rebuild, they're fairly easy, although a little expensive and time consuming if you do it properly.

Tried warming the crown gear up a bit with a blow-torch? to make it expand a little?

Thanks mikey but I managed to get the ******* off about 30 minutes before you posted.

Simular to what you suggested but I poured a kettle of boiling water over the diff instead and the crown wheel practicaly fell off!

Hopefully I'll have the gearbox back together tomorrow (after watching Wales get hammered by the Irish) so I can concentrate on sorting my engine problems out.

mikey14sr
04-02-07, 11:03 AM
Yeah a freshly boiled kettle can work aswell, lol.

You might have to do it again to get it on the other diff.

Geth
18-02-07, 12:22 AM
Despite my efforts it has been a bit slow on the Nova front again. I'm still working on the engine and trying to make sure I don't get any more problems with it when it is running again. I originaly thought that the tapping noise I had was caused by bent valve stems but this theory has since been disproved after checking them at the auto engineers. I also checked the valve to piston clearance on each of the valves to see if they were touching and it turns out I have over 0.120" on each of them (Kent suggested at least 0.070" when I asked them) so no problems there.
I have now narrowed the problem down to one of two things.

I had a follower fall off a while ago and drove about 10 miles before I managed to find the problem and fix it. When the guide for that valve was checked at the engineers it was severely worn and the valve was easily moving around inside the guide. I have now had the guide and valve replaced.
There were some signs of pitting on the block face and head face between cylinders 1 and 2. Apparantly this is usually a sign of the head gasket blowing between cylinders and a common side effect of this is a constant tapping noise. I have now had the head refaced (for the 3rd time) and the block decked (something I have never bothered with before).

Appart from that I haven't had much to do except a bit of painting while waiting for things to be done.
Anyways, I know you lot like pictures so heres a couple to keep you interested.

Decked Block - Mmmm, Shiney :)
http://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e230/Miko_Gethinsky/IMG_0060.jpg

Repainted cylinder head. I've tried Aluminium VHT this time as the stuff I used last time flaked from heat given off by the exhaust manifold. For those that don't know, the crap on the inlet manifold mating face is grease so that the paint won't stick to it.
http://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e230/Miko_Gethinsky/IMG_0062.jpg

I should be able to get the engine back together this week so I can hopefully start on stitch welding my engine bay next weekend.

[EDIT] Forgot to mention the nightmare I had with the fecking gearbox. I stripped a thread in the box when tightening the bolts on the diff cover plate. Stupid Haynes Manual! 30nm my ****! Anyway, got me a nice new helicoil fitted for free when I got the block decked. I've taken the bolts up to 20nm this time and I might take them a bit furhter if I get any leaks.

Very quick update for you.

Fitted the ARP rod bolts this afternoon.

The engine is pretty much back together now except for the sump which I was going to fit today but discovered that I have forgoten to buy a sump gasket  I should be able to pick one up tomorrow which will mean I can put the engine and box aside and start work on the engine bay.

Geth
26-02-07, 07:41 PM

Adam

Looks like a standard one with the ball chopped off, thats what I did with mine.

Geth
10-03-07, 10:34 PM
I think that is basiclly what it is. It doesn't look any different to a normal cable apart from the fact that it doesn't have ball on the end of it.

I bought the carbs on eBay from some guy in London I think. They were advertised as 1300 carbs so it seems quite likely they are your old ones.

Finally some progress that doesn't involve the engine.

I've stripped the engine bay down and the stitch welding has started.

I've also started to strip out the interior. I'm not really going to get stuck into this for a good few weeks yet but thought I should get the carpets out of the way to do the welding.

Anyway, a few of progress piccies for you.

There's not much to say about it really so I'll leave you with some piccies which should say everything instead.

Engine bay prepped for painting, the grey stuff is a zinc based spray. Apparantly better than copper based red oxide.

First coat of primer sprayed on.
http://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e230/Miko_Gethinsky/IMG_0157.jpg

We should be spraying the paint on in the next couple of days at the latest, that is as long as we don't get any more sand related incidents.

Gethin's Final thought
After sand blasting make sure there is no sand left in the area that is going to be painted.

22-04-07, 04:12 PM
Cheers Chunny, i can't wait to get her on track now. I think all the prepping and painting work is over with now so once the paint is properly dry I can start bolting everything back in. Expect to see a few posts popping up over the next week or so asking what I'm supposed to do with left over nuts and bolts etc. lol

I've still got a fair way to go and probably another ?900 - ?1000 to spend on tyres, suspension, seats and a few other bits and bobs, but if push came to shove I wouldn't have a problem taking her out on standard suspenion again.

I've got some nicies coming from EuroRallye in the next few days too but I won't tell you what they are until I've got them.

Loom
Headlights and indicators
Alarm
Wiper Motor
Washer bottle & Header tank
VIN plate
Bonnet release cable
Clutch Cable
Radiator & Fan
Suspension
Steering

Time for an update me thinks. Again it's been a while since I posted anything on my project but I assure you that work has been on going, but due to the type of work it hasn't really been worthy of posting.

I've spent the last few weeks stripping all of the crap out the inside of the car. The headlining has been a real pain in the 4rse as the glue that held the sound deadening in place was still really soft. I tried numerous techniques to remove it including fingers (too slow), scrapers (just didn't work), Wire wheels (spread the glue around instead of removing it), thinners (worked alright but not as good as my final optoion)... In the end I found that a can of petrol and a pack of scouring pads worked best although it still took me 10 days to finish! Even then I was left with a tacky resedue so had to go over it all again with evo-stick adhesive remover, which is awsome stuff but sends you a bit loopy if used for long periods without a breather.

This is the inside of the car so far, you probably can't see all that well but I've also removed all of the rear seat brackets.
http://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e230/Miko_Gethinsky/IMG_0217.jpg

My new Avo coilovers arrived today. I've already fitted the rear ones as I wanted to see whether I'd have any clearence issues. Luckily I didn't so it's all good.
http://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e230/Miko_Gethinsky/IMG_0218.jpg

I haven't fitted the front ones yet as I'll need to get some eccentric top mounts to fit them to. The car looks really funny the way it is right now with the back end dropped far too low and the front sticking up in the air without an engine.
http://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e230/Miko_Gethinsky/IMG_0212.jpg

So with PV looming over us for this weekend and Download Festival at Donny the weekend after it will probably be a while before the next update, but I'm confident that most of the messy work is over so things should start progressing a bit quicker now.

Geth

The car is really starting to take shape now. There has been lots of work and money spent over the past few weeks so I am very confident that I'll be ready for Llandow now (as long as all of the parts I've bought actually work and nothing breaks).

Most of the work over the past week or two has gone into prepping the inside of the car. I've had it all stripped down, rear strut brace fitted and then painted. Big thanks to my Dad for the welding and painting here, I still haven't learnt how to do either yet and time is a bit short to learn right now.

This is the strut brace welded in. I've used 5mm steel for the mounting plates. Should be very strong but took a hell of a lot of heat to bend into shape. Good ol' Acetylene :D

I'm having the usual fitting problems with the top mounts so I'll be taking them to be ground down on monday and I'll have to find some 5mm spacers so I can bolt them on to the pistons securely.

Plan for tomorrow is to carry on connecting wires, pipes and ancillaries. I'll keep you updated on my progress.

Thanks for all the comments guys. I'm really pleased with how it's coming along.

As for progress today, just been doing a bit of Sunday afternoon mincing I'm afraid. All of the wires are connected up now and I've checked that all of the lights, wipers and horn work, which they do. Most of the pipes are connected up now but I'm going to have to get down to the motor factors for some new fuel and water pipes which I'll need due to changing to twin 40s and facet pump.

I'm also eyeing up an oil catch tank on ebay so I think I'll get a nice long piece of 15mm pipe to connect up to the crank breather before fitting the carbs as access will be pretty tight once they're on.

I've taken this week off work so I should really be able to really crack on with the car while the shops are open and I can get spares without having to waite for the weekend.

P.S. Craig, I'm not in a huge rush to get the atlas back. I'll send my address to you later but if it's easier we could wait until the next Cheltenham meet, or you could pop along to Llandow and drop it off there if you fancy a day out.

Good car, looks like your making some cracking progress. Engine bay looks sweet.

Keep up the good work

very good topic this. i will be interested to read more.. i have built the same kind of spec engine as yours apart from the ARP bolts..

what kind of power you think you will have?

That's a very good question Greg. I'm not expecting loads of power because it is after all only a 1.3 SR. But the way I see it is that it is built to a similar spec as a Sport which IIRC was 87bhp. So I think I would be happy if it reaches 90bhp considering I do have an extra 40cc over the standard Sport engine.

It was only marginaly slower in a straight than Nova Myth's GTE at Llandow last year when I was running the 32/34 carb so I think that's a reasonable expectation.

Not that I know of mate, his name's not on the list anyway. He seems to have disapeered but I'm sure he'll pop his head up again soon. Never mind though, I'm sure I'll find some other GTE/GSi drivers to bait lol

It's more of a small block track any way so i may struggle yet with my lardy big block.

Doubt it im afraid, gotta cough up a fair chunk of cash for college, plus I need to get one of the sills done for the MOT. And im still here, just not done a whole lot to the car!

Was a good little battle last time even with the rubbish tyres and brakes I was running. (excuses, excuses!!)

Car looks good though matey should go alot better once the carbs are setup.

Time for a progress update. I've been working pretty much flat out on he car recently and haven't time to write anything up yet, so I'll try and break down what I've done over the past few weeks.

First of all, Suspension. As I've previously I'm using Avo Coilovers with Eccentric Top Mounts from Comp Brake. I'm sure most people who have fitted these components will know the problems with fitting these so I'll quickly run through the fitting.

The usual problem with eccentric top mounts is that the bearing recess is too big to have full adjestment of camber and caster. To fix this I took both top mounts to a precision engineers and had them turned down on a laith, reducing the wall thinkness by 3.5mm and overall diameter by 7mm. The engineer told me I would probably be better off getting them cut on a CNC machine, but then realising he was about to lose ?20 decided to have a go anyway, and to be fair he did a good job too. You can see in the photo below how much it has been tunred down by.

the next task of fitting the coilovers to the top mounts also causes a poblem because the bearing in the top mount is not tall enough to tighten the nut down securely (shown in post 49). Easilly solved by dropping 3 washers down the piston to pack it out.

And this is the end result with the suspension fitted, and as you can see I've also got my new wheels and tyres fitted.

To be continued...

The engine fitting has gone pretty smoothly. This is how it stood a few days ago. The only additions since I took this photo are coolant, gear oil and drive shafts.

I also gave the 4-1 manifold a clean up with a wire brush and sand blaster before giving it a few coats of black VHT paint.

Would really have liked to have started it up today but we are about 1 litre short on engine oil, so I'll be getting some more tomorrow after work and hopefully jumping with joy to the sound of T40s tomorrow evening.

Interior, feeling pretty pleased with this now that it's done, (well, kind of anyway).

Fitted seats, harnesses fuel pump and relocated window switches to the stereo aperture. I also decided to fit a small fuse box on the transmission tunnel thing as I was starting a little collection of in-line fuses which I'm sure would have got annoying in the future.

Six points are very snug on the groin area, but I think I like it.

As I said, I will hopefully be starting the engine tomorrow so I'll post the obligitory crap camera phone video of it running as soon as.

After that all I have to do is fit front bumper and grille, then replace my brake drums and shoes and I'm ready to rock and roll :D

Woohoo! Definately some good news! Click below and turn the sound up :D
http://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e230/Miko_Gethinsky/th_MOV00003.jpg (http://s40.photobucket.com/albums/e230/Miko_Gethinsky/?action=view&current=MOV00003.flv)

It's not the first start as filming that would have been the ultimate jinx.

However I still have a few problems. If you've already watched the video you will probably have heared that it doesn't sound quite right at idle (high pitched squeek). I think I've narrowed it down to the water pump, as when I stuck a piece of hose over it the noise reverbarated right through the pipe. So it's down to the motor factors tomorrow for a new water pump.

Also having a bit of trouble with the horn which you probably have heared in the video as well. I've had quick look and it appears that the spade connector on the live wire isn't insulated and is creating an intermitant earth with the boss. So it's wheel off and fit insulted spade connectors.

The final problem is that it appears to be leaking a little bit of oil from the Sump. For some reason the sump bolts are no where near as tight as when I origanly fitted them a few months back. They've all taken at least another 360 degrees before going tight.

Apart from those few minor problems I'm happy as Larry :D

More good news!

Loud squeeking noise - Fixed - Fitted new water pump

Horn randomly sounding - Fixed - Fitted spare earthing ring behind hub to replace broken one and put heat shrink tube on spade connectors

Oil leak - Fixed - Sump bolts tightened

So now with no squeeks, rattles or beeps the car sounds beautiful. The plan is to MOT and Tax on Saturday morning and then get my **** up to Cheltenham.
