Not been on here much over the last year or so, hadn't noticed this projects section.

I'm building a class 2 autograss nova for my girlfriend to race. It's all stripped out with some very dodgy boot floor welding lol and we'll be fitting the cage ASAP.

Here's photos (taken on a phone obviously) of the day it arrived, I will take some with a digicam of how it is now in the next day or so, then take some more of the build :)

people say their car goes to heaven when scrapped. Wrong

The scrapyard is hell, when a nova goes grassing, then it is in heaven lol

I'm near Tenby btw :thumb:

it's all about the brownie points lol

The car is staying Navy blue, the gold wheels are staying put too, and I'm painting the cage yellow. Has anyone got any suggestions for what colour to paint the screen mesh? neither gold or yellow seem right

it's an option! but then again it'll clash with the yellow. Might settle for Navy blue, with a yellow or gold strip at the top.

1st one at Pendine is March 25th. Easy to find the track, head for Tenby, follow the autograss signs from st clears onwards :thumb:

this is my second race. Note that sh*t car + sh*t driver = driving straight through the wet patch coming out of the first bend and watching everyone leave me for dead, then I ended up in the middle of the track lol (carried on though and scraped a fifth)

I'm the red nova at the back of the pack lol

Pedals that came on the car (we'll soon find out if they're easier or not compared to standard pedals lol)

Fuel tank (designed for a mini, stainless not aluminum, but it does say BUDGET lol, I swapped it for a MPi fuel pump with a mate)

Need to cut these puppies down...

http://members.lycos.co.uk/magburner/nova/08.JPG

So they end up like this... (with some 25mm box along the tops)

http://members.lycos.co.uk/magburner/nova/13.JPG

http://members.lycos.co.uk/magburner/nova/14.JPG

Have to fit these:

http://members.lycos.co.uk/magburner/nova/09.JPG

to these:

http://members.lycos.co.uk/magburner/nova/11.JPG

then paint these to match for the other sets of tyres:

http://members.lycos.co.uk/magburner/nova/12.JPG

Need to get a battery box and move it here:

http://members.lycos.co.uk/magburner/nova/15.JPG

Still got to fit battery cut off switch, 32mm restrictor plate, get a seat etc etc, but the cage is the next big job. I've already made/cut most of it, so it just a case of welding it all together in place, and painting of course.

It already has -40mm springs and uprated shocks which is good, but I'll be swapping the delco brakes for some later ATE ones.

Need to get the wings cut for more clearance, although I run saloon wings on my class 6 OK and that has bigger wheels, decisions decisions lol

Some updates from today. Seat is sorted but only rested in place in picture, hence the slant! Also fitted a smaller steering wheel:

I've cut the windscreen mesh out, I'm gonna paint it tomorrow then weld it on. Think I'll go with bottlethroddy's on the colour, black it is!

been working alot so haven't made much progress until this week, but it now has a 1.3 engine and a gearbox ready to go in, the windscreen mesh is in and painted black, will take some pics in the next few days and upload them :)

Looking good! Whats the regs in regards to chopping out the spare wheel well?

Yellow cage stands out well lol

_JH_

don't think you can remove it, but you can 'modify' (that's autograss speak for butcher) it to house the silencer providing it's extended to the rear.

Thanks, pretty chuffed with how the cage looks :)

It works well with the gold alloys, and once it's got it's numbers it should look pretty mean lol

Picked up some 2nd hand Vauxhall masterfit overalls for ?2.50 at a show so she'll look the biz (almost lol)

too true, every nova owner likes to quote the GTe vs the sierra cosworths in the 80s, then some cover them in fibreglass and drive around tesco car parks on fridays:wtf:

they need competition to keep them healthy, my flawed research shows that racing reduces rust lol

(although unlike some grassers, I'd NEVER put a mint shell on the track, it's criminal lol )

Great stuff, I grew up whilst my dad was competing in autograss he had a class 5 mini at the time. They were brilliant days:) I've been to a few meets since and its still as good as ever:thumb:

Good luck with the car and the racing:cool:

OK, a couple of pics of the small progress I have made recently

Windscreen mesh in and painted (could do with another coat though)

http://members.lycos.co.uk/magburner/nova/class2006.jpg

1.3 engine is in and purrs like a kitten although I need to set up the ignition timing. The Mod list extends to a piper cambelt and that's about it lol. It still needs a restrictor plate fitting, and the cam is absolutely ****e. The max cam lift in class 2 is 6mm on both inlet and exhaust, this is only 5.1
http://members.lycos.co.uk/magburner/nova/class2007.jpg

http://members.lycos.co.uk/magburner/nova/class2008.jpg

Harness is good to go, used original belt mounts in the rear, and fitted new ones under the floor (you can just see where near the top in the pic)
http://members.lycos.co.uk/magburner/nova/class2009.jpg

Drivers view complete with DIY switch panel. Need to fit a water temp gauge and a rev counter next.

http://members.lycos.co.uk/magburner/nova/class2010.jpg

Battery where it's supposed to be, but I still need to get her a battery box

http://members.lycos.co.uk/magburner/nova/class2011.jpg

And that's about it. The Ladies and Juniors National Champs is on this weekend just down the road from us, so I can pick up the gauges and battery box there.

I'll finish it, one day... lol

Well last night we finally finished it - bar spraying the wings - and she raced for the first time today :)

A few teething problems to sort out before the next outing, but overall it went well, and she drove superbly :D

ill give you credit for that but it pisses me off when people go grassing and stuff in novas!! i could have had it lol

_JH_
29-01-09, 04:12 PM
oh, thank you so much for your credit lol lol lol

That car, no matter how highly you rate your repair skills, was well beyond going back on the road!

It pisses you off people using Novas for competition? Gutted for you :D

Every single nova doesnt need saving - the more that disappear the better off the ones left will be.

At the end of the day theyre all worth sod all in the grand scheme of things anyway ha ha.

When mines back on the road dont get me wrong ill look after it, but im going to enjoy it - so wont wrap it in cotton wool or cry if it breaks....

EDIT - anymore recent pics for this?
