So the car is all primed, just needs a rub down and painting, i wish ! Had a half day on friday to prep the body, my fingers so sore after all the rubbing down i have done. Got the roof, qtr's, wings, boot lid and the strut brace rubbed down ready to paint. I did rub down the bonnet and doors but there were a couple of ripples in them so they will be re-primed and flatted again.

PAINTED ! Really starting to get some where with this car now.

After getting up at half 5 every day this week and not leaving work till 6 every day, the body is painted.

Took loads of time preping the car and i think it shows in the final finish.

not at this time, as i dont have to. i only compete at club level on road rallys etc. i would have to get it log booked if i was going to do stage rallys, but i have no plans to do that.

Got my bonnet and two doors rubbed down ready for paint and im not happy with them so there back in for some more high build primer to iron out any rippes thay may have.

The bonnet was a right pain as the sealer on the inside started to come away from the frame and the skin. I have had to remove all the old sealer and replace it. the skin of the bonnet then got a bit messed up so it need some sorting out with a block.

This is the old catch mounts whic were rusty so they had to go.

Mounting seats ! Had a right **** trying to get the buckets in. Managed to mount them in the end tho so thought i would give a little discription of how i done it.

First i removed the brackets for the standard seat, makeing sure not to disform the runner !

http://img1.putfile.com/thumb/4/10012043046.jpg (http://www.putfile.com/pic.php?img=5199897)

How the runner then looks

http://img1.putfile.com/thumb/4/10012042912.jpg (http://www.putfile.com/pic.php?img=5199896)

Then i bolted some angled metal to the bottom of the bucket seats (forza). All i had to do then was trim the angled steel to allow the runners to sit cetral to the seat then tack the runners to the angled steel.

http://img2.putfile.com/thumb/8/22413430564.jpg (http://www.putfile.com/pic.php?img=6294270)

With these seat i could only get about 2 cm overlap so i had to add a brace to the runners/angle.

http://img2.putfile.com/thumb/8/22413430535.jpg (http://www.putfile.com/pic.php?img=6294271)

Forgot to get a pic when they were all welded so i will get one next time the seats come out.

The i had to find a way to mount the harness's. I used the original seat belt mounts and straitened them out.

http://img2.putfile.com/thumb/8/22414053699.jpg (http://www.putfile.com/pic.php?img=6294808)

Then just bolted them to the spare holes in the bucket seat.

http://img2.putfile.com/thumb/8/22413430547.jpg (http://www.putfile.com/pic.php?img=6294269)

All in place

Now the car in nearly in one bit im feeling a bit lost ! Got 1001 little jobs to do, im much better at doing the big jobs. theres to much thinking in all the little jobs.

So i made a start to the fuel system. The whole system will be running on -6an braided hose using jublee clips on push over fittings. I will be using the standard cav craddle:

http://img2.putfile.com/thumb/8/23607250539.jpg (http://www.putfile.com/pic.php?img=6411287)

Got myself a new fuel filter gave the pump and clean and a mod to use the -6an pipe and mounted it in the back.

http://img2.putfile.com/thumb/8/23607250529.jpg (http://www.putfile.com/pic.php?img=6411291)

More pipe work will follow soon when i figure out a way to get through the bulkhead !?!

Also found time a bit of time to mount the extingisher

http://img2.putfile.com/thumb/8/23607250639.jpg (http://www.putfile.com/pic.php?img=6411292)

In this pic what pipes need to go to what connections ? All connections are highlighted in red.

http://img2.putfile.com/thumb/9/24314234236.jpg (http://www.putfile.com/pic.php?img=6476521)

Scene as the hold fixes down on either side headlamp panel there is no need for the middle brace, this is removed to aid the fitting of the rad.

Dont know why the rear wheel lifts off the same time as the front even when im jacking off the very front of the sill, maybe theweight of the engine or maybe the car is very ridgid !

Just wanna check this, fuel from the tanks goes to the larger side of the fuel pump, out the thiner side of the pump, throw the fuel damper then throw the fuel filter to the fuel rail, out the fuel rail to the presure reg, then back to tank !?!

No presure vents !?!

Lee
02-09-07, 05:17 PM
Correct!

ashtal
02-09-07, 08:44 PM
Just seemed wierd that the system has no vent so as the fuel gets used there will be a vacuum in the tank, Which i thought might slow the passage of fuel !

Has anyony had a problem with the cut down pipe on the matrix collapsing ? If so how did you fix it ?

ashtal
05-09-07, 09:06 PM
Sorted the collapsed pipe with a nutsert drilled out and hammerd in for some surport.

Also sorted the engine loom. Have not been looking forward to doing this as i HATE wiring any anything to do with car electrics.

Basicly the knock sensor wire had been cut at the ecu and a new wire ran strait to the sensor ! I buzzed out all the original wires and all were intact will no shorts ! So set about joining all original connection back up. All seems cool now, and most of all TIDY http://www.migweb.co.uk/forums/images/smilies/biggrin.gif

Mid maddness !

Right, who knows there nova and c20xe (cav gsi) looms !?!

The only spare wires i have in the engine bay of the nova loom are:

http://img2.putfile.com/thumb/9/24913592718.jpg (http://www.putfile.com/pic.php?img=6533621)

1) black/red (thick wire)
2)black/yellow
3)blue/yellow
4)blue/green
5)blue/white
6)blue

Now i know i have a big postive cable which comes strait from the battery to the started and also spurs off to the alt. but i done knoe what else connects to the other conections on either ?

In the engine bay i also have a long wire which is red on the cav loom, i assume its the positive connection for the ecu loom ?

Its on the same bit of the loom as this dead end connector.
http://img2.putfile.com/thumb/9/24913592893.jpg (http://www.putfile.com/pic.php?img=6533622)

Anyone know what these plugs are for as they are unacounted for:

http://img2.putfile.com/thumb/9/24913592826.jpg (http://www.putfile.com/pic.php?img=6533623)

http://img2.putfile.com/thumb/9/24913592996.jpg (http://www.putfile.com/pic.php?img=6533624)

And on the inside i have on wire for the fuel pump which i know but i have 2 connection block i dont know where they go !

block 1)
brown/blue
black/green
brown/yellow
brown/white
lime green

block2)
black/dark blue
blue
red/white
red/blue (not fuel)
black/brown

Any ideas peeps ?

Another quick question, behind the near side headlamp in the loom there are 4 wires spare. 1 really thick brown which must be an earth, a less thick brown ? a black and a thin green, hopeing these last two are ignition live and rev counter.

http://img2.putfile.com/thumb/9/25007244326.jpg (http://www.putfile.com/pic.php?img=6539038)

What side of the coil must the rev counter be connected !?!

Anyway, got the exhaust sorted on sat morning, went very well i thought.

Started by fingering in where it might go !

http://img2.putfile.com/thumb/9/24913592999.jpg (http://www.putfile.com/pic.php?img=6533626)

This was all the standard cav dimention stuff to this point, bar a little bending upwards for a bit of clearance

http://img2.putfile.com/thumb/9/24913592952.jpg (http://www.putfile.com/pic.php?img=6533627)

I had 2 brand new audi a3 exhaust mounts that i put to good use.

http://img2.putfile.com/thumb/9/25007244194.jpg (http://www.putfile.com/pic.php?img=6539027)

http://img2.putfile.com/thumb/9/25007244180.jpg (http://www.putfile.com/pic.php?img=6539026)

Then i cut the first surport hole to hold the exhaust in position

http://img2.putfile.com/thumb/9/24913593069.jpg (http://www.putfile.com/pic.php?img=6533629)

Then i welded some more a3 bit to the box and got it in position

http://img2.putfile.com/thumb/9/25007244154.jpg (http://www.putfile.com/pic.php?img=6539024)

http://img2.putfile.com/thumb/9/25007244148.jpg (http://www.putfile.com/pic.php?img=6539025)

Think i have a problem with the wiring ! Got the engine loom all connected up fine, got an earth strap and earth points on the inlet fine, got a constant live and the ingnition live, all good but when i turn the ignition on the pump dont start ! Even when i crank the engine the pump dont start, it only kicks in for a couple of seconds directly after i stop cranking the engine !?!
Any ideas !?!
Also there was only one wire from the donor car which when to the fuel pump and i am useing that one. The relay does has ignition live when i turn on the ignition.

I will do a run throw of what i have got and why.
First, there are 2 outputs on the master cylinder for the rear so one needs blanking up. The one closest to the bulk head is a m10 times 1 thread and the output futher away is a m12 times 1 thread, so i will use the bigger m12 output for the rear and blank the m10. To do this i will simply welded up the end of a normal fitting as they are steel (pics to follow).

To the master cylinder i will use a banjo connection with dash 3 pipe fitting

this will go to a 90 degree bend (all fittings dash 3 pipe and m10 times 1 thread)

this will fix to a bulk head fitting with a locknut

travel through the car in the braided -3 hose to another bulk head fitting infront of the the rear seat

through the floor to a tee piece where all external lines will be solid lines.

Just for you vaughanmc ;)

Think its well over due for an update so heres a little one !

Got the nova home after a year at work but its come a long way in that time !

http://img2.putfile.com/thumb/12/36312223548.jpg (http://www.putfile.com/pic.php?img=7382184)

Now its home the windows are all in but the front 2 need finishing off. The drivers side has the standard nova rubbers in but there going as soon as i know what rubbers im going to use. This N/S door with a modded pug 206 3 door rubber.

http://img2.putfile.com/thumb/12/36312223567.jpg (http://www.putfile.com/pic.php?img=7382185)

Not taken the plastic cover off yet as i got a plan to stop the rattle and improve the slider. Only problem i have is this part of the rubber dont sit quite right, not sure what to do about it yet.

http://img2.putfile.com/thumb/12/36312223583.jpg (http://www.putfile.com/pic.php?img=7382186)

Another little job was the induction filter. I refuse to pay 33 quid for a foot long piece of silicone hose so spent 15 on 2 bits and joined them with a stainless tube. Plus the id stays at 70mm, better flow http://www.migweb.co.uk/forums/images/smilies/nod.gif

http://img2.putfile.com/thumb/12/36312223693.jpg (http://www.putfile.com/pic.php?img=7382187)

And last but not least, the track rims. Not sure to refurb them of just throw on some slicks and leave them as they are.

Mint car mate, i really like how you've done the boot floor, what stonechip did you paint the floor with? was it out of a spray gun or an aerosol?

Think i might paint the cesaro in white to stick with motorsport theme, might have to be r888 tyres as well, might need to use them on the road at some point.

Anyway, had a mate over today who has got his own nova 2.0 16v. His car has got 16 ich kosei sniper, which looked perfect to show off some of the brakes and suspension http://www.migweb.co.uk/forums/images/smilies/rolleyes.gif

So we trial fitted each others wheels

http://img2.putfile.com/thumb/12/36411041260.jpg (http://www.putfile.com/pic.php?img=7388308)

Think i prefer the bigger 16 inch wheel, even tho they need refurbs. But they do have t1r tyres on ! So we swapped wheels.

Big improvement on the red car.

When i run the nova the tank build up a vaccum and it makes it well'ard to egt the cap off the tank. SHould i put a breather on the tank of just leave it.

As it is just a vaccum should i put a one way valve in the cap !?!

Got my cesaro wheel into work at the start of the week to give them a full refurb. I think i will be painting the cesaros glasier white and fitting them with yokohama spec 2 tyres (195/50/15)

http://img2.putfile.com/thumb/1/912204969.jpg (http://www.putfile.com/pic.php?img=7457063)

Got the tie bar brackets spare. They also have been powder blasted, perfect for welding for extra strength if anyone wants them ? I can push the bush out if someone wants them.

After jonlem said i would hate the noise from the sliders and i know i would also hate the scratching that happes also i have tried to improve the window sliders.

You cant really see in the pics but i put clear stone chip foil on the inside of the window and slider to tighten it all up and to avoid scatching

totally agree wtih CG above, much harder looking wheel with no caps, i too sold mine on...

more importantly as it's a track car, having centre caps just adds unnecessary obstacles.

should you have to rush in the pits mid session for some reason to whip a wheel off, all you want to be armed with is a 17mm, not fiddling about with a centre cap/ extra unsprung weight aswell.

They would be removed for the track to avoid them flying off and as you say ease of removing wheels. But still have them on at other times.

Been a while since i done anything to the nova, but last weekend i got evicted from my garage so i had to find the nova a new homw (which is sorted for now). Anyway, after taking some advice i have decided to splash out on a tank and swirl pot, and to go with them i have also upgraded from 8 mm id braided hose to 10mm. This is only really between the tank, pump and pot as the feed to the rail and the return will remain 8mm id.

http://img2.putfile.com/thumb/5/13011020537.jpg (http://www.putfile.com/pic/8124517)

Got a 8-10mm reducer so the return pipe will fit on the swirl pot
2 1/8 rpt fitting for thge lift pump i will be fitting
3 meters of braided 10mm id hose

Should be completing a few jobs over the coming weeks like: Fitting tank/pot setup, gsi tiebars, ecu chip and general finishing touches ready for pv.

Got my new tank and swirl pot ! There perfect.

All the oulets are 10mm and the tank is about 35 litres (9.5 gallons !?!). It has got inlet, outlet and a breather. Plus 2 outlets for a sight tube, plus a splash bowl with a run off !

Well, its a sad day :(
I drove the nova to work for the last time. Finished at 4.30 pm and worked on the nova doing finishing touches until gone 11 pm. Trimmed all the inserts for the front suspension buches to tighten up the bush in it housing. Cut and welded the exhaust in numerous place, it now sit right up inside the tunnel
Made some brackets to hold the poly windows firm in place and thats about it !
Got a bloke coming to buy it tomorrow and he sound like he might use the nova as i intented to. So hopefully will keep this thread going with what ever mods trackdays, shows etc etc the car is at. Shame i cant afford to keep it
Sad to see it go :(
