View Full Version : Resolutions!
Ive never made a new years resolution in my life! Ever!
Unfortunately, when i started smoking, at the grand old age of 13, i made a pact with myself that if i got heavily addicted, i would give up on the new year after my 25th Birthday, happy in the knowledge that my 25th was a good 12 years away, which at that age, is longer than an Ice Age.
So here I am, the first day a non smoker, and people who know me will probably have some idea what state im in after a day. Ive already sniffed an ash tray, and im currently chewing on 4 sticks of nicorette gum, which, if it gets any bigger' i shall be rolling into a tube, drying out, and atteplting to smoke it!
And unlike the times ive half heartedly given up before, this time, if i dont manage it, i will have broken a promise ive had with myself for 12 years! If i break it, ill never be able to trust muyself again.
On the up side though, if I manage it, i shall be considerably richer than i was last year, and maybe manage to run up to the loo without having a minor heart attack!
So if i get irritable in the weeks to come, you'll know why.;)
Good on ya lee! That's how i did it, just stopped, may not work for others but it certainly did for me! Keep chewin the nicorette!!! Put the money you'd have spent on fags in a pot/bank account everyday for the first 6 months, and you'll soon have the nova finished!
Good luck with it sir,
The hardest part is the routine element, smoke breaks at work etc.
What got me back on them was work being so slow, I literally just had nothing else to do. I shall enderver to quit again now I'm constantly busy.
Only go to the pub when it is raining, having to stand outside will help cure you.
My brother gave up having been a serious smoker, he just got up & never had another fag again, no gum or patches etc.. he has strong will power
fair play, but i'll warn you, in a months time if you are still grumpy it wont be to hard for the other 4 of us or so to remove you from the equation and dig a shallow grave in the woodland and bury you, them rally cars will be going to fast to notice whats going on lol lol lol lol
Dan, we wont need to bury him, you can eat him instead.
good luck, makes sense with this smoking ban coming in as well. As well as health and wealth benifits

Good luck!
I've been stopped since July (i think) 2003 having also smoked from being 13 until i was, at the time of stopping 23. I had tried to stop before but never really wanted to, so soon started again. Once i had a non-smoking lady friend (now my wife) and some serious financial strife to get out of, i soon found the required desire to cut it out for good.
I've had a couple of 'toots' on someone elses when i've been drunk a couple of times, but by now its been so long that it's an unpleasant experience. Your body will always want it back, because its "soooooo good for you" but after a couple of months the taste is horrible, the smell is disgusting and you're better off without it.
I did however find the best way to beat the habbit - don't drink lol
Must've been nearly two years I went after stopping before i got properly drunk again. Think it was my stag do actually ... i was trollied that night to make up for it though lol
lol, well im still going, finding it a lot easier than i was expecting actually. Had a few moments in the van where i nearly knawed a hole in the steering wheel, but other than that, its going better than it ever has before! Im getting my sense of smell back too, which is good and not so good at the same time! lol
Scott, yeah she does, and shes also given up. I give her a week tops before i irritate her to the point of smoking again lol

Try not to get stuck in Traffic... a lot of people light up then as they get stressed and need a hit to calm themselves down.

Keep smoking cant be in hospital dying of nothinglol
Kay has been off the fags 3 1/2 years now and still has the urge for lighting up. Especailly when family trouble hit. But kept ploughing on and hasnt looked back. My car certainly smells fresher.

My dad used hypnotherapy to quit about 20 years ago. He was still getting the desire to light up every so-often a few years ago.
You can never be rid of the addiction, you just get out of the habbit.

I worked with a guy who stoped through hypnosiss,it worked for around five years then he started again,so i guess its down to you wanting to not smoke that dose it in the end.

This is day 4 for me, its hard working on the railway, because i had 3 hours of sitting in my van this morning.
Usually have nothign better to do than smoke all day, but been taking my van to bits and building it back up again, stereo cover off etc lol.
Just trying to keep myself busy.
I quit last new years didnt even plan it, i just quite, lasted 5 weeks then mate asked me to hold his fag while he was doing something and i took a puff, ended up finioshing it.
I endevaour now to spend my ?5 a day, ?35 a week, ?140 a month on somethiong worthwhile.
In a year, avergae smoke smoke over 5,000 cigarettes, thats ?2k a year!!!
Sorry just trying to convince myself that i really do want to give up.
Iv spent like ?10k on fags +
Could own a nice car, or deposit for a house, or 100 novas lmao!

yeah - once you stop pumping tar into your lungs 10-20 times per day they start to recover, and you'll be coughing up little black lumps for a couple of weeks :D All part of the process... as is breaking out in spots as the toxins in your body get forced out.
It's worth it though, when you can breath, look good, smell nice - and can actually taste your food.

An extract from my blog... day three of me stopping smoking.
Saturday night (28/06/2003) at 22:30 was the last cigarette I smoked.
Sunday was easy, a few little irritations but nothing too serious - my body didnt really notice that I was quickly using up my nicotine reserves.
Monday was quite a pleasant surprise - my day at work was much less stressful than I thought it would be, and I even managed to refuse a smoke from someone else and told her "No thanks, I am quitting!".
Actually now I think about two people offered... wow I did better than i thought!
Monday night was a bit of a nightmare really - everything was irritating me, really winding me up! Ended up fitting new taps onto the kitchen sink and having very little room to work behind the sink stressed me out and me and ended up arguing with the other half - entirely my fault... sorted it out and made up soon after.
So there you go - you are now up to date - all that is left to say is that I have awoken this morning and got to work and feel fine, no real cravings yet.
Now skip forward a week to day eleven...
I am now into the 11th day of quitting and I have to say all things are going very well. I had a little lapse last night when I almost went and bought a packet but didn't in the end. http://www.wisew.com/images/smilies/grin.gif
I am feeling healthier already, haven't caughed up much gunk (technical term) from my lungs yet and so far am almost free of spots on my face, although i have had a couple of tiny ones.

w00t.
Well it has now been 78 days since my last cigarette, and aside from the occasional little twinge I have been fine and not really wanted one at all.
I am feeling much healthier, I have more energy and my senses of taste and smell are much stronger than they were previously.
Anyone reading this who does smoke I would strongly recommend that you stop. It's not easy, anyone who tells you it's easy is a liar because it is one of the hardest things you can do.
Worth it in the end though - I now call myself a non smoker, not just "I'm stopping"... I actually say I do not smoke. It's really satisfying knowing that I have actually achieved something which made me healthier.
Im going pretty well too. No sense of smell yet as I also have a cold, but its actually helping me as I have a killer sore throat which doesnt make me want a ciggy at all. Had a really bad craving on the way home, but made do with my assistants second hand smoke wafting around my head. Very pleasent it was too lol
Im getting addicted to Polo mints again! lol

ive not told a single person that im quiting, as it will proberly result in teasing.. yes i have tw4ts for friends. lol Everyone still smokes around me and offers me cigs and im turning them down witch it a good fealing. all is going well!
Well I thought I'd join in on the communal giving up, been 2 days so far.
I'm not anticipating it being that difficult, Lois doesn't smoke and I'm not living next door to 4 of my mates anymore who all still smoke, I've also become the only smoker at work so no one to drag me out on fag breaks. I've been spending my fag break time at home with the cat, he's happy about anyone else that will keep him entertained.
Hows it going with you two?
glad to here your doing good mate!
so theres 3 giving up here then?
Looks that way,
Slight twinge today during a dead patch at work, then the phone wen't mental so soon forgot about it.
