Well it's started!

Im rebuilding ma nove. It's currently a two lady owner (one is mum lol) 67k 12n red nova, with full vauxhall service history and a spec sheet as follows:

Weber 36TML carb
Ashley 4-Branch and exhaust
Avo Shock and Springs -60mm
ATE 256mm brakes
Goodridge Hoses
OZ F1 Cups with Goodyear Eagle F1's

The Plan:

E16SE - fully rebuilt with lightened and balanced crank and flywheel
Weber twin 40 carbs
Kent AST2 (or similar)
Blydenstein B pack head
RedTop fuel pump
Rose-jointed lower arms
Avo Coilovers
Eccentric Mounts
Smoothed GSi bumpers with mk3 golf GL splitter
Maybe louved wings and bonnet
and a re-spary (maybe a colour change)
2 Corba Sidewinder Buckets no rear seats, plastic panels
Sort the rust/bodywork - New Front and rear panels and repair boot floor (so far:eek:) and seam weld engine bay

Anyway I'm now home from uni for three weeks and going to get a move on. Unpacked the engine crane, but didn't put it together as a mate came round in his new car (Civic 1.6 V-Tec - what do you mean fast!) Went down Vauxhall (Yeovil) and order lots of bits that cost lots lol almost fell over when he told me the price of the main bearing shells and top piston rings... and then that was each! Spent the rest of the day trying to hunt down cheaper ones. Any ideas? can get the top piston rings for ?58 + vat i think for a set. No luck on the Shells.

Plans for tomorrow:

Build engine stand
Sit back and admire work
Get materials to build car stand
Build car stand
Admire work - drink tea, be brave and ring LMF and AutoVaux
Strip front suspension, bumpers, lights, etc
Clean suspension and paint.
Take photos of said mincing and car parts

Hands up who thinks i'll get that all done in a day.:roll:lol

Looking forward to progress on this one and then seeing it in the flesh.

Ash
19-12-06, 06:35 PM
ummm, woke up very late, put the engine stand together and then went to get some bolts to hold the engine to the stand, then i was reminded that i had a dentist appointment, so i went to that and then had to take mother shopping (staff discount) ghey! And now i dont have the van tomorrow it pick up all the engine bits and to top it off there was no, and i mean no, biscuits in the house :( Almost as good start as RazorJack's project.

is that the digi dash you got off me
i can get parts at trade price from vaux let me know what you need an i will get you the price:thumb:

Ash
20-12-06, 01:23 AM
yea, well only the odemeter bit, clocked to the cars mileage. Ordered most bits on Monday, picking them up tomorrow. If you could find out a trade price on both the piston rings and crank shells, please. Would perfer genuine parts, but 300 odd quid for some curved metal is just silly. Part numbers are:

90093813
90234429

might need a few other bits so i'll keep you in mind  :thumb:

Cheers

Looks tidy, future plans sound cool :)

?300 odd for rings and shells? Foook, is that how much they are? Lol

Ash
20-12-06, 02:39 PM
lol thats pretty much what i said, and appearently so do alot of people. Not looking forward to repairing the boot floor, but other panels should be fine. I have a good friend who worked in the trade for 18 years, so he can help me out ;) Just going out to pick up the bits from Vauxhall now so i can get started on the engine

True true, but i've had mine in my garage for over 3 months and not done a thing, so :p
btw Vauxhall are G A Y! they didnt have my parts in that i ordered and now im working till after xmas. It's too cold to do anything anyway, need a heater or a NL fleece.

Ash

woah, i turned a spanner!

Vauxhall are still gay though and didn't order all the parts i asked for, plus nowhere is open so i cant get my crank ground, not that vauxhall ordered any shells. Found a place for the piston rings and going to try another place tomorrow for the shells.

Anyway, started after lunch and mounted the engine up:
http://img125.imageshack.us/img125/1139/dsc00360vp3.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
seem to be missing a few bits....

then clean up the rocker cover, starter motor and alternator and a few other bit that took ages. and i finally fitted my first new part! a washer/gasket thing:
http://img117.imageshack.us/img117/8869/dsc00359qm4.jpg (http://imageshack.us/)
Its small i know, but its progress

couldn't do much more on the engine so i turn my attention to the car, or rather rust hunting now remember all these panels are 15 years old (original) so i dont think it's too bad:

http://img117.imageshack.us/img117/4182/dsc00364el2.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

just rust fallen down, fairly solid panel

http://img117.imageshack.us/img117/5361/dsc00369bk9.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

I think i might just need a new front crossmember and slam panel, on top of a new rear panel, boot repair and if im being picky a new wing and rear arch, oh umm. Anyone in the area what to teach me to weld...? anyone?

03-01-07, 05:36 PM
Ash. I doubt its any use.

Ive got 20k balanced & deseamed rods with ARPs, Mahle pistons etc. came out of my turbo bottom end that developed a crack in the block.

Good progress though. Should be a cracker when done.

staggy_gsi

i paid 5o quid for my rings and 18 for the shells. either mine are made of cheese or youre getting skanked!!

good luck anyway, looks a good car!

Ash
03-01-07, 06:46 PM
cheers for the comments guys, i've just finished deseaming my rods, i should weigh them as well, i suppose. Craig arent your pistons for a bored out block (1650cc) and low compression? Just wondering, im keeping standard pistons and already have bought some arp bolts, doh. cheers anyhows

Where did you get your shells from staggy? I've got piston rings now (?60 - lmf, plus another set of GM lowers) but struggling on the shells, john perate was meant to be getting back to me today with a price, but no word yet.

05-01-07, 10:34 AM
is that a 2.0 8v head they sent you?

Jack
05-01-07, 10:34 AM
Mmm... I'd have thought even if you'd told them it was for a 1.6 they should have at least assumed it was for a small block engine.

draper
05-01-07, 10:40 AM
unlucky about the head, nice to see progress tho - i started stripping an XE engine months ago and still not finished !!

surely there gonna swap the head tho ??

craig green
05-01-07, 12:11 PM
Damn that sucks. Not the 1st time its happened on here recently either.

Who did the head actually come from? (supplier)

Ash
05-01-07, 12:48 PM
no, i came off ebay, sort of. i missed the auction and then emailed her offering monies, and it was sold that way. But in the auction she did say it was for a nova, and she owns/did own a GSi. The head was bought for her by her ex, and she didn't want it any more. It is brand new tho, so i suspect i can sale it on easy enough, it just trying to find another one. I am trying to keep to a budget so that kind of rules out a new one at 500 odd quid.

Also my new nitro rc car still hasn't turn up :(

On a plus note, i had a 30 min phone converstion with John Perate which was intresting, and he's also sorted my out with heavy duty shells and some 32mm chokes for my webers, ideal

Ash

Ash
05-01-07, 12:51 PM
is that a 2.0 8v head they sent you?

Yea, well its a 1.6 8v bigblock head, which fits the 1.8 and 2.0 8v's as well, guess it might up the compression on it as well, hence why bill used a 1.6 not a 2.0

Ash

Matt2107
05-01-07, 01:22 PM
You might even make a little profit on the resale if it was cheap enough to begin with.

craig green
05-01-07, 01:51 PM
Sounds like the same scam as what was pulled on Chimp007 re the head he bought, turned out to be unsuitable for a 1600 small block & after I reccommended it to someone for a 1600 big block, its not even suitable for that! Its for a mk1 Cavalier 1600, not even a relative of the OHC engines as we know them.

I think you have been scammed!

Ash
06-01-07, 02:59 PM
ummm, blox, where can i find out which head it is? it appears to be for a j-series engine, same layout and every thing but bigger than my e16se head. anyone got a photo of a bigblock 8v head? i'll pm Chimp007, see what he did.

Ash

Bad news about the head. It must be from a 1.6 (16sh) engine.
How much did you pay for it? If you dont mind me asking.

Progress is sounding good. :)

Ash
16-01-07, 03:32 PM
mate is hopefully buying a mk2 2.0 8v astra at the weekend, so i'll try and work the head in to him :D no progress made as im away at uni, sould be home 3rd - 12th Feb so i'll get some work done on mine and my mates GTE then. Anyway here is a rough PS of how it might look, with sport side skirts, smoothed bumpers and vynal.

Hmmm that looks spanky Ash... nice twist with the side skirts and graphics.

Ash
16-01-07, 03:51 PM
yea, i thought the side looked a bit plain compleatly smooth, even with the skirts, wanted a bit of a retro racer look lol well not try and make it look modern and try an keep it looking as if it's from the late 80's/early 90's.

Simular idea to my mates GTE, he's going to make it into an Astra Sport, much like the nova sport, graphics and all, retro is cool!

Ash

Up for changing the wheels Ash?

Maybe for something a bit more retro..?

Ash
16-01-07, 04:18 PM
cheers craig, i'll check that head aswell. i'll run the numbers though EPC.

Matt, thought about it, I almost bought RMD52R's (who ever) 15" revo's but then something else came up at the wrong time. but i do love my wheels, spent alot of time on them, i only payed 60 notes for them :D

Is that with the insides of the wheels painted red?

oh yea! it was soon after RTTS i did the PS, so it was abit V-Dub/rat-rod inspired

Ash

Oh, i was never going to do the black one, just saw it in the smae folder as the wheels and thought it was funny so i posted it :p

Cheers for the comments again, i have now found two set of these side skirts for sale on this site so hopefully i'll get one set (cheers matt)

right, just been watching lots of track vids and 'ring vids, and im thinking of changing my brakes, currently ATE 16v items, but not amatching pair (gave one to a mate to get his car out of my garage) and pull slightly to one side when braking hard. not ideal. So do you recon i can get V6 items under my 15's? or just replace the ATE's with a matching pair. TBH the ATE's have never inspired confidents. I've had new M/C, 2 rear slave cylinders, new pads (mintex replacements), GM disks, Goodridge hoses and about 5 fully flushes with DOT 4. So i believe the problem lies with the calipers. Any way heres the wheels with the ATE's fitted:

http://img149.imageshack.us/img149/3856/dsc006115xn.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

or maybe a better pic:

cheers in advance

personally for me the 16v discs set up has been fine. No fade at all on trackdays and plenty of bite when i want to anchor on. The key factor is your disc/pad choice imo

Adam
21-01-07, 03:54 PM
I'd rebuild the ATE 2L calipers, and get a good disc/pad combo.

Ash
08-02-07, 11:10 PM
Rite, been in the garage all of today (without reliesing it lol) and made some progress, the whole front end is now stripped, wings, bonnet, etc and engines almost ready to drop and i've found more rust! yay! but its not too bad or on panels im replacing anyway.

Avoid at all costs if you ever want to remove your panels again

Talking of replacing panels i won an ebay auction last night for a front panel, two wings and two rear arches for ?30 - ideal, i only need the front panel and maybe a wing (dunno if there mk1/2) so the rest is for sale, along with a few other bits in the for sale forum (good plug)

Will post pics when back at uni, forgot the cable for the camera.

The Plan:
Drop engine, bug John about my crank and flywheel, make car mobile again - go get scared at the price of bodywork these days, go pick up the panels and go back to uni.

Ash

craig green
09-02-07, 10:53 AM
Sounds like its coming along nicely (slap yoself, for forgetting camera lead) LOL

You should have a firmer pedal with the 16v setup because they have a smaller slave cylinder than the V6 calipers. Everything tip top & as said some really good (expensive) discs & primarily pads will ensure the best stopping power.

Keep it up mate!

Stanley
09-02-07, 11:51 AM
Personally i wasnt bowled over by the 2.0 16v setup i had. Very vague feeling.

Mintex discs and pads which faded so easily and eventually warped them. (not even on track driving - just heavy road use)

On went a set of drilled and grooved discs with greenstuff pads and to be honest it wasnt much better. Less fade but still not much 'bite'.

Looking for a better setup for the Corsa im buidling..... Any ideas??

Ash
09-02-07, 02:02 PM
wa hoo, my crank and flywheel is ready, plus with new heavy duty shells its come to ?168! I thought the ?203 orginally quoted was fair. Just going to pick it up now.

http://img267.imageshack.us/img267/411/dsc00412rt8.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
Can't real see much but a very good job, very happy :D

Brake wise, i think im just going to buy a new/refurbished set of ATE's like i got with DS2500 pads, dunno about discs tho - brembos maybe, also is a GSi servo any differant to mine (1.2)? worth changing?

Cheers for the comments again, sorry for lack of pics

Ash

craig green
09-02-07, 03:28 PM
GSi servo is bigger but that is of little help. What you want is a bigger bore master cylinder. Could try and make a Cav turbo one fit the Novas bracket, or track down a very early Astra GTE16v m/c. It needs to have horizontal mounting holes.
Ive always found GM discs to be good quality, have them drilled & use dot5 fluid.

Adam
09-02-07, 03:39 PM
Just keep with the 1.2 servo.

I've never had any problems with 2L brakes, and 1.2 servo/mc.

Ash
12-02-07, 12:39 PM
now i've got the crank back, i could start rebuilding, but John gave me some 1.6 16v pistons, is it worth fitting these? he thought there would be because theres more meat between the piston rings, there also flat top, unlike the dished 8v ones, so more compression. Only thing holding me back is, i resently bought a full set of rings for my 8v pistons (at ?60) of which only the top two fit the 16v piston, so i'll have to buy yet another set of lowers, so i'll have two sets of 8v's spare and have to wait till mid march to fit anything.

Also when fitting the new shells, shall i run a smear of oil over both sides or is there a special lube for this?

Cheers

Ash

Ash
18-02-07, 07:13 PM
rite ive decided to use the 8v pistons and if they break i got spare :D

just order lots of stuff for my carbs as well, all the jets, tubes and chokes etc. Almost sold them again and bought some GSXR 1100cc carbs, but then what would i write on the vinal, so i kept the T40's lol plus i just sprayed my inlet red, and who would want a red inlet manifold :tard:

sorry to intrude on your build thread, i forgot to say wat i was also going to say...

car looks sweet, and with the spec it's going to have will be quick fun. i like the retro look of the red with the vinyl graphics to the all black and red hints.

keep up the good work!

Ash
02-03-07, 06:22 PM
WAHOOOOO!!! i got a Blydenstien B+ pack head, so big exhaust and inlet valves. So happy been waiting years to find one and it was so cheap for what it is. normally i see 2nd hand ones advertised for ?500 - ?575 this was half that *Dancing*

Anyway i've been polishing my carbs up and will be fitting all the new tubes and stuff soon, but i might spray the carbs black and leave the brass showing. Just need an AST2 now and the engine will be fully assembled. Also got my chassis plating kit through from Chris and my Sport side skirts are being picked up from Scotland today. Life is good

After a PM from bieransri about 16v pistons, i thought about it more and is an 8v bottom end with 16v pistons any differant from a 16v bottom end. I know the rally boys use the 16v bottom end so, do they have to do anything? i worried about piston/valve clearance, as 8v ones are dished and 16v are flat topped.

As always thanks for the comments, and special thanks to Greg1.4 (Greg) and rallyman (Chris) and philsnovaboot (eBay man)

Good news on locating the side skirts Ash & even better on the cyl head. Those heads are sweet!

I like the sound of having the carbs done black. It'll really set off some nice fuel hose unions & the brass etc.

Ask Rallyman (chris Astley) about the engine/piston issues. I think you'll need the 16v rods too.

Ash

if i find a place to do the shot peening for a good price then yeah, not really looked into it.

Deseaming is removing the casing seams with can be points of stress under high load. Shot peening i believe is firing 'shot' at the rod to increase its strength.

Haven't done anything for ages as im finishing of my degree. Expect some big updates after 1st June tho ;)

Looks like a good build !

Whereabouts you at uni ? A friend of mine in huddersfield lives in the same private student accomodation as a guy who's well into 106 Rallyes.

Suffice to say, a corner of the car-park is covered in oil stains and has a bare shell sitting on the floor ROFL

Im in Reading, but studing at TVU. Thats impressive to have a shell sat around at uni.Lol if i had the car up here i would not get any uni work done FULL STOP.

Now i've kind of finished uni I can play with the car again. Time for a big-ish update:

Engine - So today I rebuilt the bottom end of the 1.6. Crank was already done, so just piston rings, shells and ARP bolts. Surprisingly easy to do, have a few issues with the piston ring compresser, but it was user error, where it didn't sit flush with the block the lower ring was popping out. Once that was done i started cleaning up my new cam cover (cheers 45_CB) and painting up other random bits and pieces. Then got bored a fitted more 'stuff' to the block such as starter, alternator bracket, pipe work, etc. whilst that was drying I started to try and remove my standard cam to clean the cam carrier, but i was being a muppet - should be sorted tomorrow. So all i need now is a cam, lifters, rockers, trust pads, 2 gaskets and the headbolts. Then i can finally fill it with oil to stop it rusting away. Next on the cards are rebuilding the carbs.

semi-polished rocker cover

http://img112.imageshack.us/img112/3694/dsc00708cc8.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
Random painted bits.

Bodywork - I've now got a new front panel and rear panel (GM) just on the look out for a full drivers rear quater. My welder is itching to get started so i better start stripping and preping soon-ish. Finally got the irmscher/sport side skirts and started preping them (cheers greg 1.4) along with starting to smooth my bumpers. Still trying to decide what cage I want, I'm thinking of just a rear one at the mo, but one i can upgrade to a full cage later if i want.

http://img112.imageshack.us/img112/89/dsc00709yt5.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
GM rear panel (note the dynamat i have to remove)

Interior - To early to say, looking at cobra daytona's, but i like my standard SR ones. The rear is going to be paneled out now with maybe a 10" sub behind each seat. when i get a proper car (daliy) then the sub will come out. Also trying to find the guy who said he would make suede roof linings, any ideas?

Random bits - the wheels i've got are being powered coated black and then a red vynal lip, but im also on the lookout for some comp MO's for track. All the suspenion is off and will be sent to a mate for powder coating soon and nova's are gay and i don't have a job or any money

PS: PHOTO'S WILL BE ADDED TOMORROW, DON'T WORRY

Nice work Ash.

There are products you can get for putting in an engine to inhbit corrosion. Better than oil.

try looking on www.frostauto.co.uk (http://www.frostauto.co.uk)

Look forward to seeing the shell prep started.

I was having loads of fun (and cuts) from removing my dash and looms then set about the steering rack. One side was a nice simple nut and the other side had this wierd errr 'thing' (see pic) I can't see a way of undoing it, or am i being stoopid?

You could try hammering a cheap socket onto that bolt, that might be enough to turn it. Failing that you could grind the head off.

For That Shear Bolt, Just Use A Hammer And Chissle, Had To Do This On Mine, A Few Whacks With The Hammer/chissle Combo Then It Just Undoes With Your Fingers.

Started removing underseal, rust hunting again. Found a few spots so it was worth doing, but fook me it's hard work! and i've only done one corner :( lol Didn't finish all of it so sprayed zinc primer over it till next time.

Don't worry theres a new front panel going on

http://img522.imageshack.us/img522/5137/dsc00814vy7.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

As I'm still unemployed after finishing uni I asked my nice bank manager for some more money today so I can now finish the engine :D
Few questions though:
Are there and is it worth fitting uprated head bolts?
If I have a Kent AST2, is it better to used new GM rockers, etc or Kent ones?

Adam
24-07-07, 10:38 PM
Std headbolts are fine.
Standard rockers are fine.

What are you using to strip the underseal? I found a wire wheel on a grinder works well.

Nick
24-07-07, 11:26 PM
The GM Units are actually stronger than the ones with the Kent Kits..

But if you've got em, put them in. You're unlikely to beable to tell the difference.

Ash
25-07-07, 12:51 AM
Cheers, I haven't got either yet. Might pop down Vauxhall tomorrow morning and order them up. Been using a drill and wire brush, think I will be buying a wire wheel for the grinder soon tho :)

My welder guy just has to get this next week out the way and it should be all go.
I need (want) a new rear quater upto the window, I've been waiting out for a GM one for ages but haven't seen one yet,
how good are the fit of the Beever ones?
Should really order the cage....

Ash
27-07-07, 02:06 PM
Well... i'm angry. Just picked up the parts I order from Vauxhall. I ordered the rockers, lifters and thrust pads as well as a new back cam cover and head bolts. Came to ?86.02 with my discount. The cam cover doesn't fit - it's the square top and theres only one thrust pad, one lifter and one rocker! The head bolts didn't come with the washers either dispite me giving them the correct part numbers and the EPC saying how many of each where needed. If I add that up its ?217.52 for just the rockers, lifters and thrust pads. I could buy a whole short engine from Vauxhall for ?600, sell the brand new head, cam, bottom end and get the parts I need free  :wall: To add Kent and piper sell "uprated" ones for much less. A cam kit cost ?300 and includes those parts and a cam. GGRRRR

/rant

craig green
27-07-07, 02:12 PM
That sucks. I cant imagine Vauxhall are that expensive for the lifters & followers are they?

I've lost patience with our parts guy @ Rowcliffes ages ago. So unhelpfull. I'm usually really short with him when I go in. I usually act surprised when he gets a good price.

btw a ?600 short engine is only the bottom end if the definition of 'short' engine is to be beleived.

Ash
27-07-07, 02:20 PM
I know the guy you mean, right grumpy ****, few of them are OK tho, this was a new guy who order it tho.

I thought short meant just the engine, no ancilleries, etc. Well Charlie, the older, sound guy said the whole engine was ?600 maybe crated.

Just to add:

Rear cam belt cover - ?22.55
Lifter - 13.65 each
Thrust pad - 2.07 each
Rocker - 14.80 each

On a side note to people in the south, my runaround pug is going to die at the end of the month so i'm on the looout for a nova saloon, cheap and standard. PM me if you find one

craig green
27-07-07, 03:06 PM
My turbo Diesel hatch is for sale, needs MOT though.

Adam
27-07-07, 03:10 PM
Fcuk me, ?14 each for a rocker, screw that.

Buy a cam kit off ebay, they usually come with lifters, rockers and pads.

Why doesn't the cam cover fit? Early 1600 engines had a round cover, but i dont see why the fitment is different?

Ash
27-07-07, 08:46 PM
well its only the rear part and all the front parts I have are for a round one, not square, plus its all one piece where as the old one had a seprate piece round the water pump.

Good plan on the cam btw :thumb:

see for scraping underseal off

if u put the area ur taking off near a heater......or indeeed on a sunny day..........get urself a 1 inch or 2 inch wood chisel................and start scraping

that'll take the most of it off easy enough

then possibly use a wire wheel on yer grinder for the last we tidy up..........but ive done 1 arch on mine without to much hassle

its theraputic even ha ha

Ash
27-07-07, 10:23 PM

Time for an update then....

I scrapped the pug 305 runabout

http://img505.imageshack.us/img505/7283/dsc00840oj8.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

and gained a F*** Fiesta runabout - it's mint tho, 28k, one lady owner, ffsh, ideal.

http://img250.imageshack.us/img250/8884/dsc00858dd6.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
(ignore my dad and his mate)

Then on to the nova, I've prepped the engine bay ready for stitch welding and plating. Also I have been removing more underseal, which is fooking boring but needs to be done. Also as the car now needs to go fast and I have removed the install, I started removing the sound deading, the standard stuff came up a treat! Plus under the passanager side there was a ?1 coin!

http://img516.imageshack.us/img516/4676/dsc00873cc5.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

It from 1983 and must of been in there since it was made in Spain, there was noway it could of fallen under there as the sound deading was stuck solid all round it. Only how did a british coin get under there when it was in Spain...?

Once the standard stuff was removed I set about removing ?120 worth of Dynamat, what a bi*ch of a job that is! The stickyess stuff know to man, my mate who was helping actually pulled skin off his finger before it came unstuck.

This is how it looks now:
http://img105.imageshack.us/img105/7589/dsc00876un6.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

http://img210.imageshack.us/img210/7469/dsc00877sz7.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

http://img212.imageshack.us/img212/7777/06092007016xm8.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

Part 2 coming soon...

Ash
06-09-07, 08:36 PM
Then I got bored a moved on to investigating the drivers side rear arch which has bugged me since I removed the rub strip as it had a ripple through it. Also when I removed the rear beam the bolt fouled on the body work, so something dodgy has happened at some point. This is what I found:

http://img212.imageshack.us/img212/8748/06092007012wj3.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

http://img212.imageshack.us/img212/4999/06092007013yp9.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

http://img206.imageshack.us/img206/1058/06092007014gy3.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

It appears a new sill has been fitted at some point, but over the top of the old one, looks a right mess - so new full quater will be ordered as soon as I get a job

Whilst I was down there with the grinder I thought I'd have a look at the inner arch/chassis leg....

http://img212.imageshack.us/img212/1310/06092007010ab8.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

http://img206.imageshack.us/img206/8913/06092007011eu5.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

Oh dear, hopefully an easy repair tho, need to speak to my welder bloke, he's not too happy with how much I want done at the mo (front and rear panels, stitch welded, plated, boot floor repairs, flushing slam panel, rear wiper and plating over the gear stick hole)

Finally I've had a go at making one of these rose jointed gear linkages, as per Dar's guide :thumb:, just need to borrow a pillar dill and tap and thats another job done.

Woohoo removing the sound deadening is an amazingly annoying job lol Worth it in the end though. That small hole in the rear arch should be an easy fix, mine were way bigger than that.

Ash
06-09-07, 08:45 PM
Yea, hope so. They look to of been repaired before as well which I wasn't to happy about, I've your going to do a job, do it right! (Unless it's sound deading, then don't press it to hard so you can remove it easier lol)

Ash
12-09-07, 06:47 PM
After taking away more and more underseal in the rear drivers arch, I reliesed the wheel house isn't really attached to the chassis leg that well any more...

http://img529.imageshack.us/img529/2227/10092007039oj1.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

http://img514.imageshack.us/img514/498/10092007041hi1.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

and the spring seat is not looking to happy:
http://img120.imageshack.us/img120/1033/10092007044ye3.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

So I've decided to replace this panel, and whilst I had the grinder in my hand I thought i'd look at the 'bodged' panel, which turned out to be a huge scrape:
http://img205.imageshack.us/img205/9483/10092007037zk9.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

http://img209.imageshack.us/img209/9634/10092007038om4.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

I found these new discoveries quite upsetting as I can't afford to buy the panels atm, so out came the spray cans!

Take one dirty fuel tank, and drain the petrol.
http://img520.imageshack.us/img520/698/06092007021sz3.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

Next take an angle grider with wire wheel attachment to the metal, and finish cleaning with white spirit.
http://img520.imageshack.us/img520/3599/12092007047fc2.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

Finally add a few coats of silver hammerite and leave to dry for a few hours:
http://img525.imageshack.us/img525/3271/12092007049mo8.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

Whilst waiting for the paint to dry, apply the same or simaler method to other parts:
http://img503.imageshack.us/img503/1355/12092007053cz0.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

Incidentally, whats the N95 like? I fancy getting me one.

Ash
14-09-07, 12:07 AM
umm, N95 - confusing I think is the word! took me two days to work out the buttons and im meant to be good at these things lol Didn't help having Sony Ericssons for the pass 5 years tho. Only problems i've had so far; Theres no timer, no light, there's two menus/menu buttons, and it's a bit slow... Everything else is great tho, the camera (or though I thought it was crap) is wicked, videos are perfect as is the sound (rec, phone, mp3), oh the head phones have been designed to fit a moose tho. The screen facing camera isn't great, but unless you video call lots i doubt you'll use it. Battery life is fair, or though being a new phone I haven't stopped playing yet, which eats the battery. Comes with a 1Gb mini SD card (smaller than my thumbnail!) Last thing, you have to look after it, it's not the strongest design.

My dad pointed out the only person that would see my fuel tank would be the person I run over, in which case they probably wont be bothered, but it was a bit rusty and I know its their when im driving around... all in the detail, all these small things add up :thumb:

Yea, the weldings a shame, but it will be re-done in GM panels so should be worth it. You got a link to your project novaco?

Cheers CG, R/J TCA's are probably the first thing i bought when the car came off the road, it was eating tyres as the camber was about 7mm out, thought this mite sort that out and tighten things up a little in the process. I remembered you recommended them when you picked up the head.

craig green

5 stud is cool though esp with a small block installation....

my thoughts exactly - call me a tart but I want lightweight bolts as well, seen some dead shexy 'spoon' red ones :)

eh, I didn't relieze i was going 5 stud lol I entertained the idea for a bit tho, couldn't get my head round the shafts and CV's. Plus it's changing wheels, etc and I got widened SRi steelie on the cards (4 stud)
My next nova (oh dear) will probably run 5 stud with Vectra SRi twin 5 spoke wheels, I recon that would look damn cool on a big power nov'

I know, I've seen one, and only one, at billing this year. Thought I'd do it properly tho, hubs, brakes and wheels. I think the 4 stud ones look a bit strange for some reason tho.

Hmmm depends on the pitch of the thread on those Spoon items compared to UK thread sizes.

Ash re PM (inbox full)

That Mocca brown car I saw for sale is now sold. The local college bought it for the automotive dept.

So its destiny is in ruins.

^ Noooo :-(

I was planning to have TonySR's blue shell from him, but for my own reasons i've had to let him down, which I wasn't happy about and didn't take lightly, but it was for the best... I think. As has been said to me, there's alot to be said for knowing your shell, so I'm keeping mine and have just ordered a few more GM panels to complete it. Still looking for a cage tho.

In other news;

My billy head is at John Perrett's having it checked over, ultra light skim, valve stem seals, but now before I cleaned it up. Check out the size of my valves! (ignore the blue crap, it's the old paint + nitromortes)

That dash looks like it could be made to look pretty trick in a custom mk2 binnacle top. Fibreglassed maybe.

Not interested in Dans shell? Or Chris Tunnicliffe's?

So it was loaded up and is now sat in my garage waiting for me to pull my finger out and swap FD's on my gearbox's so i'll end up with an F13CR with a 4.18FD :D

Going to start a fully history WIP soon.

Nice one Ash.
I dont think you could have bought a better shell for track use than Dan's.
Will it be up and running for next years days?

Good to meet you the other day too :)

Dan

as said earlier all the best with it ash, going to be strange out on track alongside it now. When you have all the bits bolted to it if you need any coilover settings or geometry tips just give me a shout as i know various settings for differing setups with that shell to make the most from it :thumb:

^ and you :)

Could be 'running' before new year if I really wanted, but wouldn't put me in a good financal situation lol The deadline to have it MOT'd, tax'd and rolling is end of March. Many many changes will keep happening thought out the year. Then next winter I plan to fit an AST3, solid lifters and a SCCR Diff'd 'box. Looking into equal lengh drive shafts for a small block, can't be that hard, can it? lol

At some point it will look like that P/S back on page 3/4. Or thought I like the old skol cool of a mk1, I'm searching for GTE bumpers ATM which will be mounted with bonnet pins, already got headlights and also on the look out for indicators

Awesome shell Ash!!!

Good luck with it mate, see it soon at a SW meet?

Ash
18-12-07, 10:37 PM
Cheers Dan, didn't see your post before. That will be a great help, Gaz or AVO coilovers are on the top of the list once it's running. I have those R/J'd lower arms for camber as well. Don't know what you used to run? Strange that it will have a very similar engine and gearbox with the same tyres. I might have to learn to drive soon, people will be expecting results lol

Cheers Si, hope to do it proud and YES it will be attending many SW meets... as long as it's not raining ;) or cold for that matter lol

SRimon

ideal!

Dan

with the standard setup on the front lower arms etc at my chosen settings i ran -1.5 degree's negative camber :)
