View Full Version : budget basher (trackday prep )
I was just browsing another forum i use and came across my thread from when i first started my last project 2.5yrs ago all the way through to the current day with occasional updates. far to much to move over but here's the link for those that can be bothered to have a looksie of how we did it.

I will update this as there is alot planned in the way of checks and renewing some worn parts so can update here also when i start it

Looking forward to the updates.
Shaun.
lovin the pics dan
nice to see you have used my avatar aswell:D:D
awesome car, love the 140bhp vs 200bhp video at the end. Is that Dar with the camera?
Ash
i remember that thread well dan
tis an ace car :thumb:
Cheers for all the good comments guys,
i know alot of you remember what we did mainly due to our stupidity with deadlines and budgets etc :tard: . just thought i would add it for any recent members. looking back on it all i dont think i will ever be that daft again lol lol but i spose its good to say we did it :D
As per the original post of this thread i have finally got round to starting the check over of the engine.
We were aware the crank seal was weeping so after having built the engine back in 2000 it was decided to take the whole engine apart and see what the last 50k miles of driving has done (bear in mind it has been driven as intended on track etc etc) Another reason was the stem seals in the head could probably need a change as they have done galactic miles since i first bought/fitted the head back in '97
A few pics of our findings
engine bays still clean considering the car has been built for over 2.5 years
http://www2.novaload.net/files/dan/rebuild/bay2.jpg
Again a clean pic considering 50k of miles (always wondered what pipe was weeping water, now know lol)
http://www2.novaload.net/files/dan/rebuild/block2.jpg
Flywheel still holding up well, no sign of struggle from the clutch or nowt, as fresh as when the block was redone
http://www2.novaload.net/files/dan/rebuild/fly2.jpg
http://www2.novaload.net/files/dan/rebuild/fly4.jpg
Clutch is the first initial weak link, still has abit left in it, but best to get it redone before fitting it back on, along with a new cover
http://www2.novaload.net/files/dan/rebuild/clutch1.jpg
So there we have it, not to bad in all fairness, replate clutch and get new cover, fit new crankseal. Out of caution i will be getting new rockers/valve springs etc etc etc as the car really only live on track now, so for a small outlay is worth doing
more updates to follow
i cant beleave it was 2.5yrs ago you built it, dont seem that at all. its still looking good tho
Blimey, i see what you mean now mate when we spoke earlier, that doesnt look like an engine thats done that many abused miles!!
nice thread dan..just had a quick look through..
i guess you had to addapt the rear turrets for the avos to fit the rear?
no the avo rears were a direct replacement, i just took some precautionary strengthening measures with stitching the rear turrets etc which for me personally was ample.

nice work :)

realy..
i didnt think they would fit..
cheers mate looks like i'll be treating my nova now! :thumb:
As per title a mini update, due to being uber lazy last few months i have only just got to the point of putting the engine back together. here's a couple of pics prior to its refit next weekend :)
Fist off the new rockers i got, i was very suprised at the difference in design lol
http://www2.novaload.net/files/dan/newcar/rocker.jpg
once they were fitted along with a new crank seal and some valve springs/stem seals etc we chucked the engine back together and timed it all up ready
http://www2.novaload.net/files/dan/newcar/engine.jpg
After that point all we had to do to finish the evening off was to bang on my replated paddle clutch and brand new uprated cover
http://www2.novaload.net/files/dan/newcar/clutch.jpg
thats about it for now, we also fitted the quick rack, and whilst i was diddling with parts i redid my engine mounts by firming them up a touch by hacking my old poly arb mounts and wedging them in along with dollops of tiger seal type stuff lol
I will update this again after next weekend when we have it in and running again :thumb:
Those new rockers look much lighter, more weight saving ;) Lol
How much were they?
Engines looking good as ever, nice.
vaux dealership 100yrds from my house wanted ?15.50 each, although i haggled for ?12 each so was happy enough due to the ease of getting them
yeh i was happy with how clean the engine seems as the only paint on it is the black on the bottom end and i havent bothered to clean it as such lol
ok as the engine is now in and running i thought i would give the old girl abit of a tidy up, didnt bother with the outside as if it rains when i tax it that will do lol so will worry about that nearer the time
One small thing i did was got rid of the nova stalks, bored of the normal ones and i had some mk2 astra ones kicking around which slotted straight in and slightly got them closer to the steering wheel
some pics taken on my phone again....
Stalks fitted..
http://www2.novaload.net/files/dan/newcar/stalk.jpg
engine bay looking better full up
http://www2.novaload.net/files/dan/newcar/enginebay.jpg
front of car empty of tools and general rubbish
http://www2.novaload.net/files/dan/newcar/novafront.jpg
rear of car empty of everything else like space heaters etc (winter storage shed lol )
http://www2.novaload.net/files/dan/newcar/novaback.jpg
That is quite possibly the gayest magic tree i have ever seen lol
yeh baby ! :thumb: Pink is the new red
And it serves it purpose of getting rid of the stink left by the space heater etc that lived in the car over the winter :D

That is one VERY professionally turned out car, a credit to all those involved.
Dan, shame we couldn't see your driving style, you were too far in front of the car with the camera!
Thanks for all the kind comments :) , with a small windfall coming my way within the next five days the trackdays will be booked soon i hope which will only leave some tyre softener needed to freshen up my inters (possibly). Maybe this is the year it will let me down at some point as its long long overdue lol lol lol lol
Only if you run out of Pixie dust mate, which i doubt. And not much can go wrong bar the engine can it, and thats now fresher than a pair of balls after a bath!
Cant wait to whoop your ass on a circuit bigger than a carpark lol lol

I hope not mate. Its all looking sweet and ready for the year ahead:thumb:

Pah, no fun racing on the M5 tho is it :p
when you built this car did you have problem with fitting the alternator:confused:
Non at all jedi, we built the actual engine back in 2000, and i used the correct alternator lowered mount due to the forties and butchered my own elongated adjuster bar to allow it to sit back more when adjusted.
when you built this car did you have problem with fitting the alternator:confused:
You need a lowering mount mate, simple as that.
well just abit of text for this one, i took the old girl out to the cheltenham meet today, everything is spot on. I set the tracking abit different which i thought might be abit ott for general road use but it drove really nice, the quickrack coupled with my baby steering wheel felt really good.
Many would say it would be far to heavy but i prefer my steering like that and i wont be changing the steering wheel like i had originally planned, it completes the package even more so when coupled to the rack, the feedback is awesome.
I took it steady for a few miles and ripped it a new one after 10 miles or so once everything had warmed up and nothing essential fell off, pulled like a trooper for what it is and cleanly from 1k right through to the limiter without backing off at all.
I have noticed a new rattle appear though since i made my engine mounts almost solid but that is easily fixed so all in all that tiny negative compared to everything else i have ripped apart and rebuilt i am one happy bunny and after its first maiden voyage of 2007 its ready for a proper raping on track :D
as missus is away with the kids i though i would start my first day of peace in typical man luxury. So i got a spare sheet from the bedroom my inters from the hallway and a rasp.
Thanks to dar and abit of info i had decided that my inters were looking very sorry for themselves and were in need of some tlc. I spread the sheet around the floor and started to grind them down a touch with a rasp removing all the dead crap off and gently exposing the good rubber under the dead stuff that had hardened and formed.
Here are the results, due to the state of my lounge currently i grabbed my phone and took the pics in the hall but i think you'll agree they have come out ok
http://www2.novaload.net/files/dan//rebuild/before.jpg
http://www2.novaload.net/files/dan//rebuild/after.jpg
http://www2.novaload.net/files/dan//rebuild/mess.jpg
I shal give them good scrub in to even the treads out again but the results seem positive, and even if they are a touch off now i can easily apply some softener to them now they are smooth again :thumb:
lmfao at that carpet dan!! she'll kill you
lol as said that was just the porch/hallway bit where i emptied the sheet out, the lounge was alot worse lol lol
Quality bit of mincing there lol
As per the budget theme to the car this also followed along the same lines but i am happier with this than some flimsy thing for 100 notes from tweeks and its a tenth of the cost. I'll let the pics tell the story
Firstly a secure mounting required..... (originally for my bigger camcorder)
http://www2.novaload.net/files/dan/newcar/holder1.jpg
http://www2.novaload.net/files/dan/newcar/holder2.jpg
Now with the smaller model a better base was required......
http://www2.novaload.net/files/dan/cam1.jpg
http://www2.novaload.net/files/dan/cam2.jpg
Using original bolt hole attached the new base With an allowance of an extra eye for a safety strap aswell as off the main mount......
http://www2.novaload.net/files/dan/cam3.jpg
then its just a case of fitting the quick release section and mounting the camera (safety strap still required but an old camera one will probably do)
http://www2.novaload.net/files/dan/cam4.jpg
http://www2.novaload.net/files/dan/cam5.jpg
Probably not to everyones taste, but its massively solid, cost next to nothing to build and works a treat after my quick test drive and review of the footage :thumb:
Class bit of enginering mate. Not as bodged up as mine tho.
Take 1 slam pannel cut from a nova. Bend it drill a hole in the right place then use some hose clips to strap it down good and propper.
Here is 1 i made earlyer lol.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v617/chunny01/novajack.gif
is it not too boncy for the cam corder? i want to make a mount but even down santa pod rob from here was having trouble filming due to excess vibrations...
mine works fine. but need to get a better camera as this 1 is a bit poo.
As i have castle combe tomorrow i did a few small checks with the car as its only covered about 40 miles since last august. once the checks were done i went about putting a rear view mirror in as although i have tried one in the past it was only a suckerpad one which forever fell off lol and because of the cage it was abit awkward, as I also wanted to keep it fairly high due to me trying out my new camcorder mount tomorrow and not wanting to film the mirror lmfao. After quick call to lee he annoyingly gave me a good idea which i put to practice......
http://www2.novaload.net/files/dan/newcar/mirror1.jpg
http://www2.novaload.net/files/dan/newcar/mirror2.jpg
Sorted a few cable ties and jobs a good un :thumb:
Then onto another old creation of mine the dreaded tyre rack. I initially designed it around my old khumo track tyres so was not looking forward to having to modify for my inters. As luck would have it they fell straight in nice and snug so come wet or dry tomorrow i can have some fun :D
http://www2.novaload.net/files/dan/newcar/tyrerack.jpg
It is crude but serves the purpose well and holds them a treat
Love the tyre rack!:thumb:
Works really well.
