Thought I might as well start a thread lol

So, this week I have done... absolutely fcuk all. Again. For the third weekend :thumb:

Immediate plans are to ditch the grey GTE dash in there and put in a GSi dash. Also have some new door cards and couple of other bits and bobs. I have a car full of bits - just gotta get off my backside and make a start, except every time I get out there and look at it, I just can't be bothered...

BTW if someone comes up with the right offer they can take the car lol

lol, good start then! I thought about starting a WIP, but im not at home yet to do it, or though i could of done - 'This week i have been mostly buying...' lol

Let me know when you want to put an engine in, we could go halfs on crain hirer. Unless your getting a professional to do it..?

Ash

PS: offering to sell the car at the start of WIP is never good.

Ash, Alex's dad has an engine lift conveniently right next to my car :D If you could get up here I'm sure we could use it.

[edit]For those who want pictures, this is inside so far lol

Replacement GSI dash, from Cornish. Will be removing the old grey GTE dash and putting this in its place

There's another Mk2 dash back there too, triple dash conversion! lol

Ash
11-12-06, 01:18 AM
ummm, getting my car anywhere will be a problem (SORN and No insurance) I think i can sort it tho - Borrow some truss and a chain winch thing off dad, it will do the same job.

I'd like to say good progress but....there isn't any. Interested to see the triple dash conversion tho. It 'all be like the Starship enterprise inside lol

Jack. You have as much motivation as me.

Do you think if we got together (cars) we could help each other or would we dip to new lows of morale & halt any further progress?

Like the idea of the project however. I might come & have a gander soon if you are about.

Jack
11-12-06, 07:58 PM
Yeah, moral support is always good :D you're welcome to come have a nose around, although there's not really much to see yet lol

Plan is to get the GSi dash in, paint the interior trim black (like my old saloon), then either source some black reclining bucket seats or maybe bodge in a leather interior. Externally, I'm undecided yet - thinking either early Mk1 SR bumper valance if I can find one (if not then SR bumper), SR grille, and Mk2 rear all blacked up. Cesaro wheels if I can find any, and a couple of other touches here and there. Engine wise, I'm thinking XE, but I'll need to source fuel tank, lines, mounts, gearbox, loom, radiator, shafts etc.

[edit] Just found a couple pics of my old saloon, now I have motivation again :D Oh, did I mention a respray back to Mexico Red :D

Jack
28-12-06, 09:01 PM
No, red is the original colour. Eventually it will be put back to red :D

The door cards are coming out... I have some replacement ones to go in which I'll paint black, along with the door cappings, rear trim and carpets. Also plan to remove and replace, or recover, the headlining with something black too. Oh and the seats will be going as well lol

Just like to add, thanks to Cornish for supplying the GSi dash :thumb:

Removed the drivers side door card today, tidied up inside and slapped some waxoyl in. Also painted up the mk2 door pocket/handle and capping with some vinyl paint, however Halfords seem to think black paint should dry light grey, so that half empty tin is going back tomorrow for a refund and I'll use some proper paint lol

Oh, also went on an ebay mission last night buying some cheap choice mods :D

lmfao, yes, full set of rubbers from BT. Been putting off replacing them tho at the mo as I might remove all the windows and clean them up a bit, maybe give them a very light tint as well.

Again thanks to CarlosTD for supplying the wheels - fun jaunt down to Southampton on Saturday with the satnav taking us the "country" route..!?! And Rexy, did you weld the n/s/f wheel nuts on? lol

Anywoo, heater is in, dash is in with the ducting and glovebox, although I'll probably take it all out again at some point to sort out the wiring, heater controls and dials. At least its out the way and not shoved in the back looking untidy!

Incidentally, I also fitted the Euro offside rear light cluster. Alex took a pic of it, but photographed the wrong one. So I have a pic of the standard UK nearside rear light cluster if thats of any interest to anyone? lol

Put another couple of layers of paint on the door cappings and armrests, still not happy with the finish from the crappy halfrauds black=grey paint, so will probably end up painting them with proper car paint.

Also removed the passenger side grab handle. After much swearing and bending of screwdrivers, this is the remains:

Matt, its quite funny having the front way up in the air and the back sat right down on the floor lol... BT gave me some std springs to chuck in the back so its sitting a bit better, but me being Mr Mince I haven't fitted them yet. Been mostly trying to fix up some of the rust spots this weekend... looks like underneath the back end will have to be chopped out and fresh metal welded in. Woo :tard:

Also almost finished painting up some of the interior panels. Still not sure what to do with the roof lining, tempted to strip everything out of it and get it painted back to red :D

Hmmm, wonder if its still available...

I was looking at one in Cornwall - at a rather good price. Included all the loom, gearbox, ancilliaries etc. All it needed was an ECU.

Problem with the saloon boot is it slopes backwards, so you either need a high rise wing with high angle of attack, or a low spoiler

Matt2107
17-01-07, 11:17 AM
Custom boot lip spoiler all the way for me :)

Jack
17-01-07, 12:09 PM
I have a bootlip spoiler that I could put on it, but not sure what it would look like. It has big bolts in it too so I can't offer it up to see what it looks like in place.

mikey14sr
17-01-07, 01:20 PM
Clearly a poor design. Saloons were never built to be that fast anyway.

The spoiler was off a primera gt, when I first put it on, the angle of the bootlid made it sit lower at the back than at the front. So with the aid of some longer bolts and fibreglass paste I raised it at the rear so that the top of the spoiler sat level. Sitting at this new angle, the shape of the spoiler created way to much drag, and at higher speeds it was pulling the bootlid backwards, letting water in past the seal at the front edge, which turned the boot into a swimming pool.

The car felt a lot more stable above 60 though, so it must have been working as it should.

The Celica has indicators on the right, and wipers on the left (pull down to activate). Can't be doing with using my wipers to indicate turns, so swapped them round so they operate the same :D

Knowing my luck it'll probably turn out to be dead, but it was cheap so hey ho :D

I think Alex's dad has an arc welder so wouldn't be of much use, my dad has a MIG welder (might be a TIG welder...) but thats at home in the garage - and with no engine, I can't get the car there to weld.

Matt, you're more than welcome to the front struts once I get some replacements. Could be a while though, as I'm looking for some Spax/Bilstein jobbies to replace them with.. and they're expensive! :(

Speaking of engines, I believe this makes Alex's car a 3,041cc 24v Polo:

If you can get me a make and model I'll work out if we're better to shift that unit or one of mine down for it. MIG will be easier than TIG for the bay, I can show you either if your bored.

Jack
26-02-07, 12:18 AM
I'll have a look, its a pretty big unit though iirc. I'll see if Alex can find out what kit her dad has as well.

Cheltenham next weekend; one after that I'll probably be having a good nose round the engine and seeing what bits I need to get hold of; and after that I'm being posted off on a secret MOD mission to some god forsaken hellhole for a week or so. Could be a while til I actually get anything done then, in true mincing style :thumb:

Depends what I do with the front bumper, but I may mount some small indicators in the bumper.

Can't mount indicators in the headlights afaik, I'm sure the MOT says you need to have them separate. The outer ones are H4s and the inners I think appear to be H3, i.e. additional full beam headlamps.

You may be right, just had a look in the manual which states this:

their operation is separate from, and not adversely affected by, the operation of any other lamp.

...which I'm assuming refers to the electrics of it, not the light output.

Stop lamps or direction indicators may be combined in the same lamp housing as front and rear position lamps

"Front position lamps", does that mean sidelights or headlamps?

With ref to the headlamp/indicator combo, you'll need to make sure at main beam the headlamp is not too powerful so that the indicator cannot be seen.

I'd like to really take it to bits and go over the whole thing taking out rust and what not, especially seeing some of the impressive work other people are putting into their projects, but the be-a*sed factor is lacking. Also, as the car is at Alex's, I only get 3-4 hours max each weekend to work on it. Next weekend is the Cheltenham meet, after that the Celica is on a RR, so I reckon it might be ready for the engine somewhere round the end of May lol

Its only half painted at the mo, hence why it looks a bit crap. The car will be resprayed eventually anyway, and tbh its far from being a show car so I don't really care what it looks like... just that its painted and protected from rusting away.

I can't see it happening personally. It obvious:

mincer + mincer = fook all work getting done.

I think the blame lies with all the people that sold RJ the wrong parts lol

Lee
06-10-07, 08:42 PM
lol, that was definately the gayest collection of bits on the planet.

Someone told RJ a set of carb/spi fuel lines would be fine for an XE.... WRONG

Someone told RJ they were selling him a Nova GTe radiator and fan..... WRONG AGAIN

Someone painted up his tie bars at home, but upon removing the bolts and washers i left on them to keep them safe, he left them behind lol

The bolt that clamps the rod to the gear linkage was missing. Could we find a bolt to replace it? could we hell! Ended up drilling out the thread and fitting a bolt instead.

The fuel tank had the fecking anti-syphon ball rolling around in it. Got it out easy enough, but refitting the sender to a tank with an internal swirl pot is a pain in the rectum!

I also have an issue with the engine harness. Ive not got much experience with the standard setup on an XE due to always running carbs, then TB's. However, Im not stoopid, and the loom definately doesnt fit the engine, so probably got the wrong loom (ie, a fecking Dispack loom lol)

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v287/Bottlethroddy/DSC00238.jpg

Theres no plug for the TPS anywhere on the loom lol

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v287/Bottlethroddy/DSC00237-1.jpg

Other than that we got the engine in, the linkage hooked up and the tank in. All in all a mornings work under normal circumstances lol

The car is fecking jinxed!

That was the funniest one. Jack stood there with a standard shock in one hand and a coilover spring in the other lol It just wasn't going to happen was itlol

Someone told RJ a set of carb/spi fuel lines would be fine for an XE.... WRONG

I sold RJ some fuel lines, and as far as im aware they were MPi items. But you can use Carb line's on a MPi as they'll take the pressure anyway :thumb: the new shape Beetle 2.0 16v uses lines identical thickness and diameter as SR items :thumb:

lol how the hell do you know that!

I know it's been tryed and tested, but why would vauxhall fit better lines on the MPi engine if it didn't need them? (just curious)

Mike

lol how the hell do you know that!

Fuel line split on the missus car, so i measured it up, checked what i had spare at home (SR parts) and hey presto lol

Guess what? I ran 6mm spi lines on my corsa up until the beginning of the year lmfao. Still managed quite a few 12 seconds 1/4 miles on them bad boys. Unless your really anal about that sort of thing or going for crazy power any of the lines will do. The metal ones burst more often though as they just rot through lol

The blue one was running spi lines, and one of them ruptured. Now this could have either been just a bad line or it was the fuel pressure that did it. Either way, i'll never run them again as you can imagine.

I agree with you that steel ones rot out, but you get fair warning before they do. This is one of the reasons I made my own fuel lines from aluminium pipe ;)

Its Jacks car at the end of the day, If he wants to run these lines, its his choice. The opinions on this thread are all valid as we all know what we're doing. :thumb:

Jack, check the manifold for a lambda, despite being under the fecking car fro hours, i never noticed if it had one lol

Nuts, just been out and taken the calipers off for tidying up. I'll have a look for a lambda when I go out later, although I'm pretty sure it doesn't have one.
