If its a carb engine, clean the carb.
or fit a second hand weber 32/34 and consider a cam change.
or fit a bigger engine.
nitrous or throw it away....
As said, clean the carb, get it set up correctly and make sure the timings ok, change the oil and air filter (keep this standard) and change the ignition components (correctly gapped plugs, new leads, new dizzy cap and rotor arm) This should make it run as good as its ever going to be!
Then leave the engine alone.
You aren't going to get any more power out of it unless you spend money and even if you did, the gain will be pathetic (in terms of pound per bhp/ft lbs of torque)
I have a 1.2 carb Nova and found that you can make the most of what you already have by uprating the brakes, uprating shocks and springs and losing a bit of weight (or keeping the weight down at least - no stupid bodykits). It will hold its speed through corners, come to a halt quicker and will improve your point to point time.
weigh it in and buy a sr engine
