You can do it without mesh and paint the front panel black. I did and it looks okay IMO

What is the obsession with cutting up perfectly good bumpers & then using mesh wherever possible?

Mesh = Mess.

Mesh doesnt mean fast. Where on an F1 car or WRC car is there any mesh?

I HATE MESH

Matt2107

Mesh is ok on rad grills.... to prevent little birdies making a hole in your rad.

Yes I've seen it before, but usually only by traders who stick trade plates in temporarily; people who's numberplates just fell off and they're driving to halfords to buy some sticky pads or bolts to put it back on; chavs who have a personalised/show plate in the original location in hope in vain the law won't bum rape them for it; or big fat homo sausage-loving truckers who have names like "BIG BOY" on show plates in their windows.

In other words, it looks crap, it is crap, and the law will probably give you a shafting for it - thats if a roaming trucker doesn't get to you first lol

Ive always disliked that bumper on that car. Looks like it could break at any minute. Fail to see why it needs that much cooling seeing as it has an alloy rad & no other TBd XEs in Novas struggle with cooling as far as I'm aware.

But hey, life would be dull if we all had std GSi fr bumpers!

So whats wrong with the properly engineered GM slats that must be correct for the cooling/rad requirements?

lol nothing at all :)

I've always wondered what a standard grey grill would look like with body colour coded slats

Well said that man! I fcukin hate the stuff!

I'd rather have an exposed FMIC and have to replace it twice a year than have a $hite sheet of mesh preventing stones hitting it TBH!

Fair enough, however those are real motorsport cars with proper functioning intercoolers etc behind the mesh. Not a rusting lower fr panel in sight. lol

Too many cars on the road (owned by idiots) have every available space cut out & meshed. Usually badly.

Jack
06-12-06, 08:51 PM
Ahh yes, agree with you there. IMO there's no point chopping a vent out the bumper that provides a nicce cool air flow to the front valance, then filling it with rusty chicken wire lol

Matt2107
07-12-06, 11:43 AM
How about having one vent for a cold air feed and one for a little camera?

Im not a fan of a bigmouth gsi bumper at all, ruins the looks of the gsi bumper imo.
Unless you need the cutout for a IC, then it looks cool!

Also, it looks cool with a bigmouth and zafira type slats to match the grill.

Love the standard look. Don't like cutouts-looks jap-crap.

Should be looking toward euro-vw themes. They hide huge coolers on BAM 1.8 T's without cutouts.

maybe because an audi A3/mk4 golf front bumper is bigger then a nova one...

and they have intercoolers as standard...

but Rick that is basicaly defeating the whole point of having a large intercooler! by hiding it behind a bumper you are just covering more % of the core, making it less efficient!, i had an i/c made when i first started doing my car which went behind the std gsi bumper with no cutting needed, it all comes down to wanting it to "look good" or do the job it is intended for, keeping the inlet charge temp as low as possible, by taking maximun advantage of the volume/ surface area of your i/c and letting it see as much air as possible! which is the route i went downlol

personally I reckon mesh can look OK in cutout bumpers, its just rarely done descreetly.

The pic of mine on page 2 is alloy stretch mesh sprayed Rover hurricane Grey. When i first did the grille I put it in bare Silver. It was back out, blasted & sprayed the next day. It just screams attention when left bright. Dull it down by painting it black & make sure that whatever is behind it (usually not a lot) is dark. As has been said already. My lower fr panel was covered in Black insulting tape to hide the flame Red which wouldve looked cack & empty otherwise.

No offence to Matt172 or Fearless/brett W but I think the fr end of that car looks terrible. The bumper looks weak (not helped by it sagging & showing the grille pins), the mesh is too open & the colour of the car doesnt suit mesh IMO. The space behind the mesh isnt utilised I think is what I'm saying.

If it was a Black or dark Blue car for example, I reckon it might work though.

Subtle is the key.

Who said anything about mk4? I'm on about 1.8 turbo's into mk1's and mk 2's, just the same as a let into nova. Engine SHOULDN'T be there, so the intercooler has to be fitted somewhere! LOL!

oh, i assumed you meant a bigger intercooler on a standard golf mk4, plus alot of mk1's and 2's dont have big bumpers, so you can hide it.. yea, my bad
