If hes thinking of doing wjhat i think he is,

ie welding another rim on the edge to wdien the steelies, then he needs to be shot!!!!

Ive seen so many times this done and the rim splitting to disasterous results!!

Get a grip

could probably could get hold of some steels that have been welded together, i.e so they are 10 inch wide. They were how ever used on hot rods, not the 18 litre v8 ones, the circuit racing ones.

its easy enough to do, but dangerous, and wont fit!

^^^ a freind of mine stuck his pinto powered rod into the wall at buxton recently at approx 70 mph flat chat, rim did not split or crack, it just bent it in two.
Personally i've seen some split rimmed euro steelies and i think they looked top notch and i'd have no problem putting them on my show car. (IMO!!)
After all you should see how many seam welds hold together a new astra rim, you'd be very surprised!

Lol novacabrio, those above are the very same rims i've seen!!!!!!!! They look excellent!!

stu i think your getting mixed up between banded rims and re rimmed, banded rims is where the wheel is cut and a section put in to widen them highly illegal and dangerous as you say - however re rimming is perfectly safe and legal re rimming is exactly that - the centres of a standard wheel welded into a completely new wider rim

i can see you feel strongly on the subject and appear to be against the euro look completely

it can be done, was a lad used to come to our local meet with widened mondeo steels on his mk2 escort, its called "banding" needs to be done properly, the wheel is cut in half(must be dead straight) then the band is welded in to widen the wheel.

Rednova, if you decide to get some done, let me know if you want as i'm interested in getting a set done, we may be able to get them cheaper? Must ask my mate with the hot rod who their wheel suppliers are.

Novacabrio, do you know if those wheels on the spider are 13 or 14 inch?

I was thinking about this a while ago, i would of thought it was ilegal unless done proffesional, however, i guess if it passes an MOT then it must be legal, therefore the MOT tester will be the person in the wrong for passing the wheels (obviously if you deniy any knowledge of the wheels being welded back together!) If it was me, i would probably try and buy the rims from bbs (2/3 piece style, as these were designed to be taken apart and put back together) and then weld whatever centre piece in, just have the make sure the welds are strong, in the right place, and make sure that the centre of the wheel is placed correctly in the rim so that there isnt too much stress on the welds and obviously no wobble.

Just a few guess's........

just had a look on the american site - full guide on how to do it, also shows how to powdercoat at home:thumb:

now - the new rims they fit are from a 4x4 or van, so does anyone know of any vehicles over here with 14/15 inch steels approx 7/8 inch wide, this will give me a starting point hopefully:roll:
