Not owned this for long. Only really get weekends to work on it (University commitments on weekdays) :( but made a bit of progress since I've had it.

As it was when I bought it:
http://www.iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP/1.JPG

Gave it a well needed wash and removed bumpstrips and rear badges:
http://www.iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP/2.JPG

Got myself a GSi bumper which I big-mouthed and gave a new lick of paint:
http://www.iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP/3.JPG

And a new wing which needs colour coding :p Fits well for a pattern part:
http://www.iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP/4.JPG

WIll update the thread as I make progress, but as I said it's a weekend thing unfortuntely.

Thanks. Plans:
Get bodywork mint (rear arches need a bit of attention)
Paint Astra six-spokes (on blue one) black and swap those/suspension to white one
New interior (thinking black vinyl dye on most panels/retrimmed doorcards/maybe reclining bucket seats)
GSi engine depending on insurance (insurance always ruins my plans lol)

i'm looking to get a white mk2, i loved my first one. the gte was fun, but i hated faded red paint! will fit all of the gte bits and engine to the new one when i get it! i need to find one this week, i go back to uni next weekend, and got dissertation work to do this week.

keep up the good work! fingers crossed, i'll get a throead going on my new one. i'm jealous :D

does the paint stick well? or is it a case of good lacquering?

Iain
31-12-06, 06:09 PM
Yeah it does stick well. I built it up with several layers over 2 days. You can scratch the dash with your fingernail and nothing comes off as it soaks in to the material itself. Doesn't stick badly to the harder plastic either (fuse box cover etc)

put the bumper wip pics up on here!
Quite a few pics lol

Started out with a slightly rough GSi bumper:

http://www.iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP/BumperWIP/1.JPG

I first cut the slat out of the middle with a saw:

http://www.iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP/BumperWIP/2.JPG

And a bit more to get this:

http://www.iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP/BumperWIP/3.JPG

Fibreglassed the gaps where the slat was removed (put gaffa tape over gap, fibreglass from the back to get the right shape!);

http://www.iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP/BumperWIP/4.JPG

http://www.iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP/BumperWIP/5.JPG

For the towing eye cover I fibreglassed it in the same way and sawed through the middle so it can be removed:

http://www.iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP/BumperWIP/6.JPG

Bit of filler:

http://www.iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP/BumperWIP/7.JPG

Sprayed some primer and saw what it looked like (yeah it's a shoddy filler job lol):

http://www.iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP/BumperWIP/8.JPG

Iain
01-01-07, 08:38 PM
Lick of paint (and plenty of lacquer) over the whole lot (bare plastic/filler primered before-hand:

http://www.iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP/BumperWIP/9.JPG

http://www.iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP/BumperWIP/10.JPG

Gave the splitter a coat of matt black:

http://www.iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP/BumperWIP/11.JPG

Tidied the edge up with some rubber trim (as I hadn't sanded it down to be perfectly flat):

http://www.iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP/BumperWIP/12.JPG

Also painted behind the bumper matt black:

Finished all the wiring + alarm (with r/c/l) yesterday finally, after many problems with blowing fuses and stuff it's finally done. Oh, and it runs. lol

Looks fairly tidy with the new wings on, just needs the rear arches doing. Lowered 50mm in the following pic but putting -60mm springs on I think.

how hard was it fitting the 1.6 engine loom

Wiring the engine is fine really, just 4-6 wires for the engine itself (only 3 needed to get it running). Look at my previously created threads for what's needed as I've asked that same question myself. :)

This weekends work consisted of stripping down the rear brakes, replacing a cylinder due to a sheared bleed nipple and replacing the rear bearings

Car's pretty much finished now
Dunno who I was trying to kid  Don't think modified cars are ever finished.

New OMP strut brace makes the engine bay look a bit more interesting

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP/65.JPG

Also I was having problems with my exhaust swinging about whilst driving. Thought I'd try out some poly exhaust mounts from RallyDesign. :)

Old mounts, look a bit worn:

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP/66.JPG

http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP/67.JPG

New mounts, orange ones are obviously going to be better than black ones :thumb:

Quite impressed with them actually, the exhaust now feels quite solid and shouldn't flap around as before. :thumb:

RallyDesign (http://www.rallydesign.co.uk/catalog/default.php) PolyX exhaust mountings. They're stiffer than the standard rubber ones so the exhaust doesn't move as much.

Just a few pictures of this weekend's hard work. :thumb:

Headgasket blew and was chuffing coolant out the exhaust so off came the head.

http://www.iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP/71.JPG

Yep leaking in to number 4:

http://www.iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP/72.JPG

Err wait a second, square inlet ports? It's a fooking 16SV head! You can see where the inlet has overlapped the square port, not good.

http://www.iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP/73.JPG

Needing a new head, I bought a complete C16SE engine (yeah I know overkill lol) and nicked the head

http://www.iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP/74.JPG

And spent a day modifying it! Opened up the inlet and exhaust ports a little:

http://www.iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP/75.JPG

http://www.iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP/78.JPG

And lapped the valves so they sit nice in the head

http://www.iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP/80.JPG

The head will be getting properly cleaned tomorrow and rebuilt ready for refitting. Thanks Tom Reid for your help the last few days. :thumb:

Thanks Lee :D I forgot to mention the engine is running again, here's how the engine bay looks now.

Just taken a look on the Halfords site, their cans are 300 ml for ?5.49, which seems pretty good to me, as I cant find any other 300 ml cans for less, and everyone else's are about ?4.00 for 150 ml :)

Going to have to pick some of that up this week!

http://www.iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP/97.JPG

You can definitely see it's rattle canned in the daytime. Where it's delocked and blended in to the rest of the door you can see it as it's more matt and less shiny.

Am thinking of new rear arches and a fresh layer of paint anyway as most of the panels have been replaced/smoothed/touched up somewhere.

Paint around where you've cut to stop the rusty marks that will start to run down your bonnet.

It's got a bit of primer on, but I'll do that if rust starts appearing, thanks.

Stumbled across an early tailgate I forgot I had today, so started prepping it to be painted

Oi! Iain, do us a favour, weigh your bonnet please?, I've a suspicion that it might weigh less than a fibreglass one.

Looking good Iain, love the early tailgate, thinking of getting one myself, without wiper hole and washer hole. Should look good when done :)

B@lls. Ive got some Aerocatchs here ready to fit to mine but TBH Im not so keen on the look once there fitted. They just look to big & outta place :(

Im not keen on conventional bonnet pins either, but Ive got no bonnet catch/lock or cable at all as the intercooler got in the way :(

The aerocatches look 10x better than bonnet pins though

Can you get aerocatches in white?

Paul

Nope, black only and with red pins only.

Cheers everybody.

Just gonna stick a grommet in the wiper and washer holes like my current tailgate, can't be bothered smoothing them out.

Yeah the Aerocatches look a bit 'in your face', unless they're on a black car or carbon fibre bonnet. They shouldn't be hard to paint but I don't mind the look of them though.

Tom I'll weigh the bonnet when I get a chance - would still expect the fibreglass one to be lighter though.
