I really like novas! So easy to work on and as said before easy to bolt big engines in. I first started liking novas when i was 6 years old when my brother passed his test and had a jamaica yellow 1.3 sr. I really wanted one when i went a run in a 2.0 16v gsi. It was quick and so cool!

Hated them when i was at school, bought one after killing a fiat 127 and haven't looked back apart from getting the astra, which I've still got after nearly 4 years, the sr is my 4th nova.

i hated them untill a friend got an sr when i was about 16 and i saw they werent actually that bad. he sold it and about a year passed and i was looking at fiestas escorts all the insurable cars and he said what about a nova i thought no but had a look at a few and ended up buying a mint sri had a taste and i loved it passed my test and then unfortunatly rolled it. i was looking at getting a different car but thought no i can tranfer all my mods over so i bought another white one which lasted a week untill some **** smashed the fcuk out of it. so frustratedly i looked for another nova bought an sr with twin carbs on it, modded it and used it as an everyday runner for a while, untill it got sick, and then bought a mint blue sri which im still driving so i guess it is because i dont know any different than an obsession but my mates still all take the piss out out of me.

My obsession started just because my first car was a Nova. The saloon, then I got the white SRI 3 years later.
http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i203/Shaun_ODonnell/1stnovas.jpg
I rolled the SRI and my then girlfriend (now wife) wrote off the saloon. So we replaced the saloon with a decent car built up from 2 Novas (red SR and a red spin)
http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i203/Shaun_ODonnell/rebuild1.jpg
I then sourced a new shell for my SRI and built it up.
http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i203/Shaun_ODonnell/finished.jpg
The finished projects 4 years ago. The red car is now scrapped and the blue one I sold early this year.
The current steed:

It all started for me with my first car.

It was free.
1.2 5 door in jamaica yellow.. I put some horrid seat covers in, light brows and a black sun strip.

I'll have to scan the pic I have... will be worth a laugh.

I'm amused by those saying they loved Novas from an early age (i.e. before being 17 and having one!)... erm, when I was a kid, I loved American muscle cars, fast and sporty powerful cars - not an everyday cheap family hatchback!

dannyb
15-11-06, 10:55 AM
I used to hate Novas and the percieved chav image when I knew nothing about cars, but as I started to drive my mums on and off I grudgingly realised how fun it was, despite being front wheel drive (all the others have been RWD). When I learnt a little more about power to weight ratio and what suspension bits do what, the pieces fell together very quickly! I got my first and current Nova, mums 1.2 5 door. It was only supposed to be a cheap way of having an insurance policy so I could drive my BMW with 'the owners permission' (dads insurance for 200 a year!!). I've ended up having more fun in the nova than my BMW and my RWD Volvo, purely becuase I cover so many miles in it. I think half the fun is the cheapness, it doesn't drink, parts are cheap when you break them and its fairly anonymous which I like. Especially as it will do my friends Rover 25 GTi that he just bought for 3 and a half grand around the local country lanes and roundabouts!

I've always like the look of nova's from around the age of 15/16, I got my first nova after crashing my first car on the road (2nd car owned) which I'm ashamed to say was a Punto! Ever since then (17 and I'm now virtually 20) I've 'loved' them! I sold my first one to buy a newer car and soon realised that it was no fun and ever though my first nova wasn't as fast it was much more fun to drive. So I'm currently on my second nova which is a pain cos it's always braking! but I still love it when I walk past it sat on my drive :D

I inherited my first in 1997. Great uncle died, dad went down to Kent to sort out all the arrangements etc and came back with a 1987 1.2 Merit, Jamaica yellow, less than 27k on the clock, and gave it to me.

I treated it badly, to be fair, but i loved it. Decided the brown interior wasn't for me a few years later and duely found an SR interior on the net somewhere, went to leeds and bought it. The guy selling it asked if i found it for sale on "novaload" to which i replied, "dont think so, whats that?" ... the rest is history lol.

I've had that 1.2, a black 1.3 sr, and a blue 5 door shed. Added to that, my better half has had a blue 1.2, a red 1.3 sr, a red GSi and a silver GSi (currently being stripped).

The novelty of freezing to death in winter, the ongoing rust battle and constant M.O.T worries have got the better of us now though. I would like to own another good condition nova at some point, but doubt either me or the wife will be bothered - new cars are the future!

I got my first one when I was 16, a 30 quid A reg shed. It sat on my drive for months refusing to start until I found out it was fuel pipes, replaced them started it up and the exhaust fell off, so I scrapped it lol. After that I went into of a phase where I couldnt stand them and thought they were the car of the chav lol. Everyone knew I hated them except me ma who baught me one for my 18th....never looked back since then! Ive been back in the nova game for little less than a week after owning a mondeo and a corsa after my last nova got stolen but its good to be back :thumb:

well, until I hit 17 I never had a great amount of interest in cars.

Then, it came to buying a car to learn to drive in, and my dad found an old 1.0 banger - I didn't even know what a nova looked like!

Then... I fell in love with it's hard boxy shape. And old skool looks. I'm now 19, and on my second nova. Very nearly lost all hope in it, but.... maybe I can't bring myself to tow it to a scrappy yet ;)

I was a total fan of Vauxhalls at 10 or so. I was into mk2 Cav SRi's & Astra GTE's. I discovered the Nova when in my last years of school reading the MAX POWER feature of John Shields 16v turbo at Millbrook. I recognised the shape from a Silver GSi in my street & my love affair began.
Any MAX Power or Fast Car with a Nova feature was bought for the scrapbook cuttings & I got a 1.2L in leaf green (B reg) as my 1st car.
2nd car was a flame red H plate GSi & I still have her.

My sister's first car was a Nova Swing in 1996, B reg iirc, Mexico Red. Her second was a J reg 1.2 Merit, Mexico Red. Which I bought from her in 2000 as my second car. Then bought a 2dr H reg saloon alongside that one in 2003, 1.2, Mexico Red.

Sold both mine in early 2005, and bought a GT4 which wasn't Mexico Red :(

Mum bought me an F-reg Nova 1.0 in white when I passed my test at 17. Made it into an SR replica and ran it for two years.

Then bought my black H-reg GSi in Jersay. That got an XE when I was 20 and then the LET 6 months after that and I still have that car, just in the process of having a full respray/rebuild now. (has been for 3 years)

Also had a dabble with a Renault 5GTT when the Nova came off the road, should have kept that instead of the Nova as it was the best car I ever had but sold it to get some cash to carry on with the Nova.

Then got a yellow 1.3 SR rotbox and put an XE in it and then a red GSi that I swapped the XE into. Sold this recently and got a Celica GT-4 and have fitted the LET into a Corsa SRi until the Nova comes back from paint.

Can't imagine being without the black Nova now i've had it 6 years even though its been off the road for the last three.

I saw one in a max power magazine when I was about 14-15, and loved it. Then when I turned 17 dad asked me what car I would want as a first car, and I wanted a nova!

Dad bought me a 1.2sx and got hooked since that day really! That was written off earlier this year, so had it nearly 4 years. Now ive got my 2nd which is my project car.

Funny that. I got my GSi in 99 with 94k miles it wasnt low or high mileage but about average for the age. My car has spent so long off the road for whatever reason etc. Its now almost 2007 & its on 129k.

Is that below average mileage? lol

Bought mine in 2000 with 69k on and when it came off the road at the end of 2003 it had 79k on lol. Did 5k on the 1.6 engine, 2k on the XE and 3k on the LET. Was my daily driver as well but it spent 4 months off the road at one point when I was fed up with it.

My nova obsession started when i was driving home from work in a **** grey 1.1 ford fiesta and a white nova lowered gsi kit etc was in front of me. It looked and sounded amazing plus it was the first one i had seen in years there different mainly because its all about saxos etc nowadays. But that was my starting point to proper get into novas, hence the reason a bought a white sr as my first nova:thumb:

when i was looking for a first car with a budget of ?1000, i was looking at anything but nova's, i hated them. Then my mates dads mate (who are car dealers - sounds dodgy doesnt it) got hold of a nova which was left at vauxhall, for them to sell. The old woman who owned it before had just died and the family passed it on. Anyway it was washed once a week, garaged and best of all it only had 48k on it. It was the straight-est car i'd seen and after a test drive, it was mine. Since then i've loved it to bits, but i really should of kept it standard. The only reason it became moddifed i because some one loosened my hub caps and work and i lost them on the way home. I couldn't find any others so i bought some (gay) alloy wheels, which then meant i needed to lower it, and so on and so on.....

It's been up for sale quite a few times now, but i dont think i can actually bring my self to sell it.

First day:

I was into cars as a kid, but my mum got a 1.3 astra in 1983 & suddenly I liked vauxhalls. then my grandad got a 1.2 nova merit in 1984 & I loved it, even though he only went 25mph and never did more than 5 miles in one trip. He died in 1985, and the nova became our second car. I passed my test in 1986 & within twenty minutes I was a nova driver. I had that car until 1991, fitted a home built 1.4, then it lost an arguement with a cavalier. I had 2 astras for a couple of years then one day I woke up & decided I need a nova. bought an A reg beige 1.2, & a rolled gte, and made a good one out of the 2. It finally rotted out in 2002. my current one is a g reg 1.0 base model with all of the best bits out of my old beige one. I am not obsessed at all, but I can't foresee the day I when I won't have a nova....
