I had a 318is Coupe E36, its the 1.9 16v twin cam, it uses the same head as the e30 M3. I had 18" wheels lowered 30mm. 140bhp standard was pretty quick gave me a surprise. 140mph with 3 people in the car and hut the limiter. Are you looking for a e30?

get a 318 rather than a 316, the twin choke carb is way better, and make sure you spend as little as possible and take it up salisbury plain for some green lane sessions. Most fun you can have in a RWD, as it will just keep going, they are impossible to kill, as opposed to a cheap sierra which will just keel over after a while!

I had mine further up a stream than some bloke in a Landy was willing to go lol

Buy a 318 E30 for less than a grand, they are good fun but a little tail happy in the wet on cheap tyres like the one I had the (mis)fortune to drive. I had a 730i which was good fun too, they are cheap as owt now.

i LOVE the E30 shape 3series

my mum had loads of em - but all sadly ended up either stolen or wrapped round the nearest tree/lamppost (yes my mum was nuts - even she got banned!)

had a nice 320 with leather, BBS's etc etc and went like fook - snorting all the way to errr 70 mph of course.

i WILL own one of these one day

I'd probably steer clear of your mates car, dont buy it just because he is selling it. Look at others on the autotrader and the like, you'll get a 318 with around 100-120k for less than a grand, and it wont have been owned by a young person whos thrashed it!! (if your totally honest with yourself, he probably has) That way, you can have the better model, and maybe buy the Alpina wheels off your mate. Personally, I'd never buy anything thats been modified, theres only one reason why people modify cars!
Insurance will be steeper than I nova i reckon, 316i start at around group 12 whereas a SRi is group 7 insurance. You might want to ring first to get a quote on one though before you go any further mate.
This is my old 730i that I got when I was 19

bmws do eat mileage well, more so the straight 6s though. if its a well looked after 150k (regular oil changes etc) , itll do another 50k no probs. is it cam chain or cam belt? the only other thing that can kill a bmw lump easily is overheating. if the thermostat is playing up or theirs signs of mayonaisse, walk away. post pics of both cars and the specs of both pls mate.
