Haven't attempted it but i reckon it'd be quite a tight fit.

not enough room I doubt.
Why not make a parcel shelf from 2 peices of 12mm MDF. Cut the centre out like the std shelf & then mount tthe 6x9s from underneath. Put some mesh accross then use grey acoustic carpet to cover the whole lot.
I did this on my 1st Nova & you'd never know it had rear speakers.
Or bin the 6x9's get some decent components, maybe in door builds?
You don't need speakers in the back, it's only for rear fill anyway.
Far better spending the money on a decent pair of comps (IMO)

True if you are using a sub(s). Bang for buck off a head unit though, 6x9s make the most noise.

Think the MDF idea is looking quite a good one

simple solution using the rear parcel shelf and some mdf
make some backing plates or mounting rings from mdf with the 6x9 cut out
cut the 6x9 holes in the parcel shelf
mount the speakers on the underside of the shelf then cover the top of the shelf in some thin black cloth
out of sight out of mind
