View Full Version : Oil Cooler

I have a 2.0 16valve engine to go in my nova and it is the last of the pre-ecotec engines (ignition controlled by a "dis-pac" not a distributor). Anyway, the engine has no oil-cooler on it and no attachments by the oil filter housing for one.

I have seen the oil-cooler bits on a 16valver at the scappy (engine blown). Would it be a good idea to get this, or would I be wasting my time because it is not needed?

The engine will be running at a higher bhp as I have some carbs for it.

Any ideas welcome

if your gonna be running it at higher than normal revs all the time then yes get one. refer to the demon tweeks catologue (aghhh) try driving with out a cooler at first to see if you do seem to run higher revs. then if you do then get one. but be carful as they can damage the engine if you get one thats too big as it will cool the oil too much and the oil will loose its performance thats gained at temperature.

You can fit the oil cooler but as the engine is a bit tight on that side of the engine bay the pipes become a problem.

Many people persevere and it ends in tears (like me) the pipes tend to get worn by the tyre which a) fails MOT's b) is a worry when you deposit all your oil at 6,000 rpm in the middle of a race. But it gives the guy your racing summit to think about :)

What most do, but no doubt people will argue differently, is leave the cooler off and use a cool running stat which can be bought from regal etc or for the same thing but cheaper order a South African spec stat from Vaux takes longer to get but is good. Also even though people say you don't need to, wire your fan up to a switch so when you hit traffic jams switch it on even though the gauge says it's cool. It gets hot under the bonnet so all that air blowing about helps. Remember your wiring loom runs about 3 or 4 inches from a very hot manifold!

I've done loads of miles in mine and It aint over heated yet so I must be doing summat right.

Tanks guys,

I suppose I'll keep it as it is then and get a cool running thermostat.
B-)

my car runs cool all the time without cooler or cool running thermostat, one thing i do suggest is manual switch for fan through a relay, i have this and is very handy to control the temp. especially for dragstripping, as one lad was having to turn his engine off and push it forward so it was at right temp to race.

When I asked people for the 2.0 fitting guide, most people seemed to take the cooler off. If you use synthetic or semi synthtic oil it will be OK at the higer temperatures anyway, in fact the thinner oil will relase a few BHP.
