gearbox

just recently i have put an engine in a nova and when i started the car it had no drive shafts in and i didn't realise it was in gear. After a few minutes i realised transmission fluid was leaking from the bottom of the gearbox. It had a hole on a small plate that bolts off the bottom of the box. When i took the plate off i realised that some gears and stuff had came out their place and grinded through. What could be the problem and what could have caused it?

the gears are out of the diff it happend to me they reliy on the shafts being in oh wel
