bottom cross member lowering

Has anyone else done this? Just fitted a let with 6speed box and rather than lower the tie bar I have decided to lower the cross member which is bolts on to. Currently only at the stage where I have cut it off but going to weld a steel plate down each side then weld it onto that and also run some square tubing throught the cross member I think and also some reinforcing plates. This will drop the tie bar around 2" I think it was but also thinking about the track control arm, welding a plate on the under side of this and bolting the tie rod to the bottom instead of the top.

2" sounds a lot to lower the tie bars. Maybe someone will correct me. Another way is to weld brackets to the underside of the crossmember & then fit the std GM tie rod brackets with longer through bolts.

Is the member in the way of the intercooler or something?

i lowered and made my cross member smaller but stronger in my opinion so that the rad could be lowered for fitting the intercooler above it.

p.s. i have a pair of bottom arms which have already been plated and fitted with poly bushes if your interested

Seems a bit extreme to lower the whole cross member, i welded two bits of 50mm (2") box at either side.

I just fitted some poly bushes to mine the other day, typical!

Reason I decided to cut it right off was to allow more space for fitting the intercooler and radiator, wanted to take the V shape out of the front of it so the intercooler would sit flat. Sure it will work out alright in the end

I chopped a section out and put in a solid bar so I could mount my intercooler in more. I'm moving to the f28 over winter and I'm probably gonna do as Rich did and weld a box in.

I had a dream last night that there was an American company doing billet alloy front ends for Novas.

Complete one peice chassis legs & fr cross member all machined from billet alloy.
It was bolted & bonded through the bulkead & had adjustable suspension top mounts built into the turret tops.

Anyway..dream on! LOL

I've been watching a lot of American Hotrod on discovery real time recently and I keep thinking if I one the lottery I'd definately get them to build me a nova hotrod. Basically a nova shell on custom chassis. Have the front end lengthened and go for a typical V8 in there! yum yum.
