View Full Version : Gearbox mods - close ratio - options?

I have an F10 (Standard) on my 1.3. Has anyone ever modded one?
TBH I know fark all about boxes, so my real question is: Does anyone know a mod/ change for making your box a close ratio without paying the silly money I have seen these quafie things go for? I think you can just change the final drive cog right? but they're still a lot.
Whats then difference between and F10 and F13? Could you interchange their final drives.
thanks as always.

get an f13 CR close ratio with a 4.18 final drive, or if you have lots of money and dont care about fuel consumption then 4.53

Cheers Shane, I take it they are 5 speed and fit straight on;
Do some Vauxhalls already have F13 with those ratios of final drive then? Which model can I blag one off?
thanks,
7im.
no gm vehicle was produced with a F13cr with a 4.18 or 4.53 FD fitted. you have to mod them yourself. Ive written a guide that is now located on the PVG forum (i will be putting a backup on my sig link site).
there is a guide as to what clusters and FD's were in what cars in the speed in gear part of my sig link too.
the only ratios that you can change on a std F13/F10 are the FD and 5th pairs. the rest are fixed.

OK Stuart I looked at your lilac table and i'm not sure if I understand it (as its in German or something) but am I right in thinking that the final drive figures are in the larger table at the bottom?
If so that would suggest that I (with my 5 speed F10 on 1.3) would have an FD of 3.94 And a 1 litre Nova with a 5 speed F10 has an FD of 4.18
So does that mean I could simply swap the FD (crown wheel AND pinion?) from the box of a 1.0 L to mine? If so do you think that would be worth doing?
Thanks.

OR; Having looked again, could I put the 4.18 from the 1.0L into an F13 CR from a 1.4/1.6????

you want an F13 C/R box from a nova sri or gte/gsi, then do the F/D swap as in stu's suggestion using the crownwheel and pinion from a 'box that is allready 4.18/1 and you'll be accelerating very nicely, at the expense of top-end speed (but who needs to go over 100 when you can go round roundabouts at 50-60?).

Your F10 may already have a 4.18:1 final drive, the box I got with my SR engine did. Check the stamp on the end casing.

My nova barely gets over 100 on the speedo as it is (probably more in actual fact but like most I havn't adjusted the speedo since getting alloys) because of my large front skirt and rear spoiler. But this helps massively round corners, together with 205mm wide tyres, so like you say it doesn't matter when it beats everything on the road for cornering.
Don't think I'll have a FD of 4:18 as mine was originally an L not SR.
Thanks for the advice everyone.

Of what mate?
think he means the car....
side note, i fail to see how on a car that is as aerodynamic as a brick can "get downforce" from that air dam at the front..... meh never mind

If it has a splitter at the base of that airdam, there is a good chance it will provide downforce!
Just checked his link and he hasn't so ur probably right lol

Matt if you mean the car I have some pics on pvg - click the link below my sig.
Sorry Stu I didn't really word that right - the front dam doesn't create downforce but it minimises the amount of air going under the car and helping to lift it off the road. And the more air going over/around the car rather than under, the more stable it is.

Probably a wide ratio box then so I would bin it but there is still a good chance it has a 4.18 final drive which you could keep and fit to an F13 GTE box. Or just use an F15 from a Corsa SRi/GSi as this has same ratios as a GTE but is already fitted with a 4.18 final drive iirc
Nope the F15 dosent come with a 4.18 fd fitted... also the way the F15 is build its like a baby F16/F20 in that the pinon is part of the output shaft and the entire cluster would need stipping down to swap them over from another F15 box..... (or a quaiffe item)

Sorry.. I should try opening my eyes a bit more.

Great so I can identify a GTE box no probs but how do I identify if I have an FD of 4:18 - I take it I count the splines on the crown wheel and pinion but how many should there be on each for a 4:18?
There should be 4.18 the amount on the crown wheel than on the pinion.
Most F15cr's i've seen are either 3.74FD, or 3.94, mines a 3.74.

As I said before, its stamped on the casing.
If not take CWP out, count teeth on both cogs then divide larger number by smaller number & you will get the ratio
if you read my swaping guide on the PVG site it tells you...
but the pionon has 17T and the crown wheel should have 71.

Sorry Stuart, I couldn't find it before as it was put on there by bottletroddy and I just thought you had only done the table I found. But I had a harder look!
Good guide as always.
