Just got a new SR (1.4 H reg) fitted alloys, gte front calipers, piper exhaust system and have 35mm lowering springs to go on. I want to know what you reckon the best cam is to boost power, the best shockers for the money, which exhaust manifold to fit, how to sort out the shit rear brakes. and whether a k+n filter makes much difference? if anyone knows any other good mods for this engine please let me know!

best thing to do is drop some astra gsi brakes up front leave the rear, grooved disks and then suspension a proper set including shocks and also poly bushes all round you will be able to go quicker and stop quicker!

Dont bother with poly bushes, there far to hard for a light car like a nova and there feckin expensive for wot are, also dont get astra gsi brakes because they wont go under ur wheels. U could get them in if u really wanted to but ur better of going for nova GSi/SRi units and getting a bigger brake servo from an astra van, or nova GTE/GSi/SRi.

A decent set of tyres really helps with handling on fast corners. If they need replacing i'd recomend a set of Toyo proxy's, and go for like 55/60 rather than standard 65!
The k+n makes a little difference, but sounds much nocer if u have the exhaust to go with it!
Dont bother with an exhuast manifold, ul loose power below 5k rpm, and hardly gain any above, and there really noisy in a bad way.
I'd get a shrick cam for around ?175 and if ur cars done over 90k then do the followers at the same time, these cost around ?35-45 for a set!

Wot do u mean by the rear brakes? theres not much u can do with them apart from getting new pistons but its not really wort it! Once u have ATE callipers u wont b bothered about the rears m8!! trust me!

Well, thats all i can be assed to type for now so ill let some1 else have a go, maybe Ian has something to say, or disagree with, well we'l ahve to see now wont we!

errrm hello dicko? wake up? you said dont put 16v calipers on, then you said do put them on???make ur mind up???

right first get 16v brakes you will not regret it, also if you have put alloys on i presume they are 15" at least???? so they will fit.
also with poly bushes, i'd listen to someone that has tried it rather than someone who is recommending expensive mods he hasnt tried!

I'd go along with Ian's line of thinking. If you upgrade the brakes and suspension. You've made your car faster. Braking later and holding more speed through corners is probably more effective than another 5-10bhp.

A lot of cars get away from me on the straights in my lowly 1.4sr but when it gets to the bends i'm right back on em because they've had to brake so early.

I've surprised an Escort RS2000 and a BMW Z3 on backroads and power wise they're way above.

I totally agree with Fenix.....making it handle makes more of an effect on overall speed, then more power.

I too have surprised many much higher powered cars, on the twisty bits, 'cos I can break late, and can take corners quicker....I've not even got bigger brakes, but the ones I had got work miles better than the standard ones. (cav calipers - larger pistons than standard, using standard GTE disks)

I already have nova gte brakes at the front, so theyre vented, but there's not much pedal so l assume it's because the rear adjusters aren't working, l'll try to get hold of a servo but the handling is pretty shite at the mo, so shockers are the priority
