Is there a difference between the inner and outer cv boot?

I've got to replace a cv boot thats about to split and have the necessary replacement boot but I've also got to reattach another boot thats slipped off the other drive shaft at the big end (held in place with nylon straps!).

Thing is this second boot looks different (has an additional "bump coil" and doesnt have the rubber ring thats built into the wide end that fits into the groove like the replacement boot has that I have. It is however a GM part...

Both boots that need replacing are on inner cv joints.

Anyone help?

yes they are different. the inner cv usually has another "bump coil" to allow for the in and out movement that the inner cv allows

I didnt realise the inner CV allows in & out movement? Ive never really looked but it might explain why I thought I'd broke it.. perhaps its not.

Makes sense anyhow.

it is allowed to move in and out due to the way the suspension works. if not then you would destroy them rather quickly

Aye, when removing the shafts if you pull on the inner cv it moves in and out.
