Today was my first time ever at Donnington Park and it was fun.
Got up at 5am hitched up the trailer and had a coffee, wandered about for a while wondering why the hell I was up at this time in the morning and not in bed like the normal people do on a Sunday morning. My dad appeared and......ahh yes where off for a jolly at Donnington. So we jumped in the car and off we went at 5:45am. The journey up was uneventful, which is how I like it. We arrived at the track at about 8:15am and unloaded the car. I signed on and my mate who had booked the day had put me in the expert group!! Like I?m an expert, I?ve never even been to the place, let alone driven it. Ho hum.

The first thing I noticed was that I wasn?t the only Nova there, woohoo!!

My mate turned up in his newly acquired cosworth, mega powerful

It?s the cars first and last trackday, it was bought as a doner car for his mental RWD Fiesta that should have been there, except the engine had other ideas. Anyway. I was just getting the car ready for its first session and who should come on over but Oli(DHDev ? Great to see you), we had a chat and I promised him a passenger ride. It was soon time for my first session, so we jumped in, lined up??and thunderbirds are go!
One(or so) lap(s) later and this happens.

So back we come. Line up again and where off. What great fun! I find that playing TOCA Race Driver 3 has helped with my track knowledge(what corner is next) and my speed picks up fairly quickly, the car feels twitchy and oversteery at first but that soon settles when the heat builds up in the R888?s. With the first session under my belt I was well chuffed with how the car handled and how fast it was around the track. Session 2 was another great session that ended with the car I was following around most of the session letting me past right where I wanted to break. So I missed my breaking point and had a little wall of death run at the circane. Then I had a small ?off? at the end of the straight, ruddy hell! On the next lap I had another moment at the end of the pit straight(again!) and decided that it was time to come in. Looking at the video it looks like there must have been oil or something on the track. At the time I put it down to tyres. You can be the judge when you see the video(or maybe?.just maybe it was me?..nah). After the car had cooled for a while I found Oli, or rather he found me and so I thought it would be a good time to take him out. We jump in and off we go. Literally! At the craner curves. It only took about 30 seconds and we where in the kitty litter?****! I was only warming up the tyres! So after getting pulled out we went for a drive around the car park to shake out the gravel from under the car. Then back on the track. Woohoo!! Got a few good laps in, although my fuel starvation problem is even worse at Donnington so even with ? of a tank of fuel we pull in(A swirl pot is number 1 on my list of jobs to do). I think he enjoyed it. The last session I did was another great session and thankfully without incident.. Phew!

Here are a few more piccys of the cars

Very fast RX7 ? I couldn?t catch the bugger! Just under 400bhp apparently. The turbo was huge!! Apparently it was just a medium sized one.

I love donington! Go then whenever I do my trackdays. How did the weather hold up? I'll be there again on the 29th OIctober with a set of 888s on the front - how do you rate them? I've got Yoko a539s on at the mo and putting down power and sticking to the tarmac is an issue!!

Thankfully it was dry all day. I was worried about it being wet. I don't like wet weather conditions. Although you get some impressive slides in the wet:D

You will love the R888's, but if your only running them on the front be prepared for an intresting time. They are mega sticky compared to the yoko A539's. For example with the R888's on I was still able to keep up and pass cars running slicks.

Looks like a fun day out, i shall be there on the 29th. I have a set of toyo 888s that have been seriously abused, dont reckon they will last longer than 1 session lol. I just hope it doesnt rain for me as im fcuked to say the least if it does.

Its was a great day out. A really nice track. I was put in the expert session so I was out with stuff like a RS500, EVO FQ-400, GTI-R and even a radical! Lots of them on slicks as well. But the Nova held its own:thumb: Thankfully.

The vids are hosted.

Session2 (http://video.google.co.uk/videoplay?docid=-875559038582581863)
Session3 - Off at the craner curves (http://video.google.co.uk/videoplay?docid=6600841225338657978&hl=en-GB)
Session4 (http://video.google.co.uk/videoplay?docid=6252757207402803888&hl=en-GB)
I've got all the links on www.daXTek.co.uk (http://www.daXTek.co.uk) as well. I've also got some of my other vids there. Session 2 and 4 are good. although it all goes bandy at the end of session 2. Session one is ok and session 3 is short and sideways. Although session1 does include an almost off at the craner curves on the second lap.
Please note that on the straight with the sound measuring equipment im not giving it full beans. I suss out exactly where the mic was after a while so its not so apparent in the later vids.
I hope you enjoy them :)

lol session 3 "****" !!! also does the diffuser make much difference??

Philsutton
16-10-06, 04:59 PM
thought you might go off there, thats where most people do, doesnt look that bad until your going full chat into it. A scooby went flying past my mate backwards there last we there lol

Dar
16-10-06, 05:15 PM
lol Its a bugger when you get it wrong!
The diffuser is not really meant to be a downforce aid on my car, but rather an aid for the air to get out the back of the car quickly. With the spare wheel well out of the way the bumper hangs down and acts like a parachute getting pulled backwards through the air. The diffuser stops this. I could have had the same effect by just using a flat piece of ally. But the diffuser shape looks better and adds strength. Im faster around Castle Combe with it on.

would be ace to get it in a wind tunnel to see how much difference it does make and wether or not it does aid downforce

Ace videos! Are you running a diff by any chance?

Interesting to see how your car drives compared to mine. They seem similar speeds into the corner I just struggle putting the power down coming out (let and no diff!).

p.s. that 1st bend at craner curves is an ass! It took me all day to build up the courage t go into it full chat without breaking or lifting off - and I was in the wet! lmao

not had chance to look at all the vids yet Dar, just session 3. I had a couple of off's there in july with Benji in the car due to the geometry being all over the place. Even keeping you foot in wouldnt of saved that one but it looks like you got it straightened up just in time before you went into the noisy stuff.
