There is more to cams than lift. Duration is important, but also overlap between inlet and exhaust. Manufacturers build in an overlap between opening of the inlet and exhaust so that some of the exhaust fumes are recombusted therefore cutting down on emmisions. If you can alter this then you will get good improvements. 16v engines dont have this problem, coz you can alter the timing between the two cams (inlet and exhaust) and cut down the overlap.

When choosing your cam, think carefully about what characteristics you want. Having zillions of bhp at 8,000rpm wont help you when you are being beaten by 950cc fiestas of traffic lights coz you havent got any useable low down torque!
