If i were to put a 1600 gte engine in my mk1 1400sr, would i need to strengthen the engine bay at all?

I doubt it, the GTE`s have a thicker chassis but the engine won`t be a lot heavier.

Nope, the engine is virtually identical. It is slightly bored out and has a longer stroke to get the extra cubes.Main difference will be a larger flywheel so you will have to either fit a 1.6 gear box or swap your 1.4 flywheel on to it but I don't know how well that goes or if it is advisable.
