You could try and take 1st and 2nd outta a smaller car eg. 1.2s have closer ratios. PLS DONT DO THIS UNLESS IT WORKS COS IAM ONLY GUESSING :-/

What gearbox you on about? You could lower all the ratios by fitting lower ratio diff, ie out of an astra van?

I`ve got similar problems. Now I`ve increased my power, first and second gear are far too short. I need to be able to hit more than 60 in second, and first is dangerous as the revs fly up so quickly. I think I`ve got a close f10, as I can only hit 55 in second, 100 in 4th and 130 in 5th (none of these are past the redline). 5th is quite week, and once I hit 115 it takes time to reach the end of the clock. Any ideas? I am quite happy to strip down the gearbox myself, but I`d rather get parts from other gearboxes than pay mucho dollars for custom made stuff.

CP did you use the original gearbox with your 1.6, or did you use the GSi one?

I haven't got a clue what gearbox I have except for it's the original one for the 1.6 GSI engine and its 5 speed. how do I find out as there seem to be loads of different ones? What I would really like is a relatively high 1st gear followed by even ratios similar to that between 3rd and 4th. 3rd 4th and 5th are the best part of driving the car.

Sorry I didn't read the question properly, I thought you wanted to lower the ratio. Ive seen a sprint nova where he lowered the ratio and used second gear to start and only ever used first to park or put the car on the trailer, not very practical for an everyday car though. Check the Diff/gear ratios in the haynes manual. Your box is probably an f13 the code should be stamped on it near the gear selector.

Can people post what speed they get in each gear at the redline? It might help me find a more suitable box. What boxes will fit my 1.4?

According to Haynes its a F13/5 CR.
All models have a 1st gear ratio of 3.55:1 and most have a 2nd gear ratio of 1.96:1.
However mine has 2nd gear ratio of 2.24:1 for some reason which explains the jump up to 3rd which aggravates me.

Yeh first gears useless, and so is second, 3rd and 4th are ok and 5ths for cruising. (GTE)
