Just as title says really guys (and gals) wanting to just plate it off so it is flat on top and underneath, just wondering for the people that have already done this, what thickness of plate would i be best using dont want it being too weak or too heavy at same time!!

Thanks MIKE

for strength and weight.... 1600 gauge mild steel.
get the grinder on the wheel well drop it off pop rivet the plate over the top then simply stitch weld all around and seam seal both inside and underneath the plate, stone guard underneath too. then voila
just pop in the oven for 20minutes and it is ready to serve lol.
just call me delia.

I was thinking about this the other day funily enough, so what thickness (in mm) does the metal have to be?

i merely X braced the chassis rails (and the harness bolt hole on the rear floor. and was planning to bond a sheet of polycarb in ......

look for my stupid 1.2 in the features for piccies... the rear end is as strong/stiff as it was before hand.

*** in a scarey god like or angel on your shoulder voice***

Finish it.

Back on topic... I cant really see why anyone would want to do this unless putting in a double exit exhaust.

i done it because i just went off on one with the weight saving notion in my head... which meant i had to loose the wheel well, hollowed the doors and rear 1/4's the headlining was binned, the leccy windows are gone (have you felt how heavy the runners mechanism and motor are)
talking of polycarb, would it be poss to replace the whole entire rear floor with clear polycarb?how mint would that look lol.

losing the wheel well and re plating it will save you ohhhhhhhhhhh naff all in all honesty. as you either need to put a funky thick plate on or brave it up and thats the weight of a small bowl made of steel straight away....

youd get more benefit having a dump and skipping breakfast.

I'll be junking the wheel well this winter, I plan on using some thinnish ally plate, as the strength is maintained by my cage and rear brace.

Main reason for junking it is so I can put a massive diffuser there :D

I kind of feel that this is a bit of a no brainer, unless its for a zorst or similar.

People go & fit rear strut braces etc & anchor there harnesses down nr the boot floor & then go & cut out a wonderfull peice of GM engineering just to bodge in a sheet of square steel???

Stuart

kinda like your corsa brake mod lol. the fat tube cant possibly cause that much of a problem ;)

also i doubt the wheell well is that much of a "wonderfull piece of engineering" lol

Ford do a similar thing with the new focus ST ;)

Your perspex example aside Stu. Does it not weigh almost the same then? A sheet of steel & enough bracing material. Surely the few grams saved isnt worth the bother?

Stuart

it would weigh the same yes. but may allow for a better routed exhaust/different fuel tank arrangement etc to bring the bcak end down more etc..

The exhaust was my reasoning behind it, im wanting a pipe at each side i think the engine will sound nicer if its split out thru two pipes(but it might not!), it would be a lot easier if the well wasnt in the way, and its a place that novas can start rusting at too, mine is starting to bubble slightly, so if i cut it out and plate it, its more solid than it was before

mine has been done using approx 1.6mm plate and a piece of box section from chassis leg to chassis leg, i'll try and get some pics later on!

i done mine with 1.2mm sheet and a brace under the floor, my cars also caged up. where are you putting the pump?

actually if youve already got a cage and "proper" rear brace then removing it will make some weight difference as you wont have to use a proper thick bit to plate it or brace it

can't really see much but you can see the strengthening beam

isn't that the fuel pressure damper?

has he? where?

and i've cut mine out,
then put to bars across from each chassic rail,to surport the floor and to hang my back box from,

works fine,
but now i hate the rear box so its going in the bin...

Some piccys of mine done. Dunno what guage plate we plated it with though but it wasn't thick. I did mine because It was rotten and I wanted a center exit exhaust. Glad its done though.

looks like thre is a fuel filter, pump and pressure reg mounted under the car near the beam in the pics...

Chris

that is the standard item fitted with the pump me thinks

Chris S

did mine my self, when building the car in a rush,
then did it properly at work, and plated the whole floor, just for the clean look,

Have to agree, that does look excellent Benn, BTW what colour of blue is your car painted? Am not planning copying!! (I am toying with the idea of Type-R grey) but that looks nice, is that one large plate edge to edge?
