I have a 1.4 carb engine out of an astra i am going to strip down and completely rebuilt it I want to no the maxium you can have the head skimmed. Also im thinking about getting it bored out and having oversized pistons. Is there a website which do oversized pistons or a kit?? cheers mark

head skimming is not going to give you huge power gains on its own.
Most decent parts factors will let you look in their piston books. there is an oversize piston that will give you 1500cc.
also look at the 1200 pistons cos they are similar bore to the 1400.
you will need to measure your head volume, and your piston volume, and also the volume the gasket takes up. then work out your cr.
I did it back in the early nineties with a 1300 bored out with 1200 pistons & had the dishes machined out a bit. It went rather well.

Theres no point of having it skimmed for fun.
Only if it needs it.

0.5mm is the most I'd go for, thats what mine is now and the starter struggles occasionaly. (1300 head and block)
