After being let down with the selling of some 6x9's I've decided that I'm sick of the sight of them sitting on my dining room table.

They are Sony Xplod's with some pretty good wattage.

I've drawn up some plans for a pair of boxes that will fit neatly against the back of the seats along the wheel arches in the mobile garage (mondeo estate.)

I was thinking of using 5mm mdf but do you reckon this will be too flimsy. The boxes are about 16" x 8" x 8"

ive never had any problems with MDF... Just aslong as you use decent fixings, i dont think ull have any problems

I'm planning on covering in black carpet (black because it goes with everything.)

Haven't really done this before so its a bit of new territory.
I'm thinking cut the wood, cover in carpet then drill some pilot holes for self tappers then assemble. Will have baton to screw into rather than the edge of the mdf. Is it worth gluing too?

i always glue, in my opinion it reduces any chances of vibration and solidifys it all.

5mm is a touch on the thin side, I'd go for 12 - 15mm tbh. Most of my cabs have been made out of a minimum of 18mm marine ply.

1/2" MDF - Screw or nail, silicon the edges on the inside, cover in carpet, Voila 6x9" bass box's!

Think I might go for some suede/ imitation suede.

Less forgiving if you cant get the creases out, go for imitation suede, its got more strech.

I dont think the creases will be a problem because I'm gonna cover each flat panel then assemble.

Although will probably still go for imitation as its cheaper lol

Dont do that, it will look ****. Assemble then cover, its harder but looks so much better!

IMO 18mm if it were for a sub, but tbh for 6x9s you could probably make do with ~12mm.

I agree with Luke, assemble the box, make any adjustments to it then cover.

Might seem a bit thick but how am I gonna cover it when its built?

Same way you'd do it pre-assembly :p

Just cut the fabric to shape once the box is built and glue on. When I did mine I left a bit of overlap round all the edges, and used a nailgun/stapler/weapon thing to keep it all in place.

If your clever you can do it in one. ideally you would get better results curving the edges of the box. Then put the material on the top ( or wherever the whole is ) then start glueing it down then staple on the bottom. Take time to strech/force out creases. Dont forget, its also a good idea to loose some of the slack/creases in the whole.

Got some nice strong spray adhesive.... I'm just worried about the edges, flaps and folds.

My gf has assured me she knows how to do it. lol at least now I have someone to blame if it look ****e.
