View Full Version : Subs vs Bass tubes

Payday is approaching and I want some better bass in the car than my cheap 6x9's produce, (i'll replace them at the same time, but) I've been looking at the sub& deals on caraudiosecurity, and based on the rep off JBL for cheap-but-good stuff, I've narrowed my choices to this (http://caraudiosecurity.com/shop/product/products_id/4901.html) and this (http://caraudiosecurity.com/shop/product/products_id/3002.html). However, there are times I like to make use of my boot, with and without the back seats folded down, so I'm also considering bass tubes such as this (http://caraudiosecurity.com/shop/product/products_id/1253.html).
The rest of my setup isn't brilliant, just this head unit (http://caraudiosecurity.com/shop/product/products_id/4481.html), some 10cm 2 way sony's mounted in the parcel shelf under the dash, and some cheap sony 6x9's in the parcel shelf that I'll replace anyway. With regards to sound, I just want a bit more bass than 6x9's can give me clearly, I don't need a 'mega bass' option as such.
Does anyone have any experiences to share with bass tubes?

How about one of those active sub boxes with built in amp?

Im in the same boat, but ill not be getting one till i pass my test. I like that base "tube" out of all the ones iv looked at, but i think ill go for a fli trap active sub, with built in amp. Not the pink one though! lol
ive got a fusion encounter sub (boxed with port) and amp i might be selling - the 1 hellfrauds were selling as a kit for 300 ?? was only in my car for 4 months then its just sat on top of my wardrobe ?? ill be putting pics up later anyway

The 10" FLI one looks ideal now that you've pointed it out :).
edit: demon tweeks stock them, i'll go have a look later :D.
The Fli are horrendous. I tryed one out and went for a "proper" Vibe instead, sounds loads better and fits into the car much better as the Fli is an awkwards shape to get in the boot. It's a CBR10 Active IIRC.

I was quite impressed with a JBL bass tubey/amp combined type effort. Its got a steel tube running along each edge. IIRC Its a 10"
Personally I'd always recommend a boxed sub, Kenwoods are very bassy subs & a good amp is just as important. I was looking on ebay at amps the other day. There was a Kenwood PS for less than a ton.
the 12" fli trap is very good for when you do not have enough money to buy a proper VIBE

Err, without trying to be sarcastic, I cut some holes. Passenger side was much easier than the drivers side. Had to cut a lot of the shelf out and a lot of the grille/fascia from the speaker aswell.

..although they look like they're in the way, they've been like that for a week or two now and nobody has kicked them, so I canceled my plans to make a pair of guards for them.

Wouldnt they sound pants though as there is nothing acting as a baffle around the speaker.

Its not a brilliant setup anyway, but they sound better there than one did in the dash (passenger side) and the original speaker in the drivers side. I gave up on trying to access the drivers side one and installed them there.

Exactly, they arent directed at anyones ears & there isnt a baffle. Theyd sound better in a shoe box tbh.
However I have seen worse. Atleast you capped off the screws so they wont stab anyone in the shins!

From behind!
i always find it easiest to mount from behind, sound quality might not be the best but you can really hit the bass notes

Do i sense some inuendo? :p
EDIT: I couldn't find a shoebox, so I mounted this tissuebox from the rear instead:

and it sounds awesome.
Anyway, getting back on topic, the FLI trap is a nono then, that JBL bass tube a maybe, and I'd be urged towards a 'proper sub' ?

JL :D You can often pick up older JL subs off ebay for ?sod-all... And unlike some other makes, these things actually push out the power they quote lol
