Novasport
23-09-06, 12:47 PM
Was a brand new Mk1 bodyshell that has been stored for about 12 years, it had been painted but badly and never got used.
There are no floor numbers and there was no rust :), didn't need any welding but put in some plates for a 6 point cage and a Harry Hockley plating kit.
Had this done as I couldn't be ****d to rub down the sh!t paint job and it would make sure there was no corrosion anywhere like in the seams & box sections.

What's the score with an older shell !?

I presume you need to have a close-to-new shell as possible, otherwise half of it will be missing when it's Dipped ?

Seen a few other older cars there, they usually come out looking like teabags! Even then its a good starting point so you can fit panels to clean metal and repair minor corrosion without the fear of it coming back.
They do new stuff aswell for 888, RML & Prodrive etc. Gives them a shell free of the unwanted heavy sealer & soundproofing etc.

And a few other nice bits like a quick rack in a new genuine rack casing...

Powdercoated suspension items including ARB's, tie bars, rear beam(Also poly bushed)...

And soon to be coated & poly bushed strengthened control arms...

ALL new genuine brakes front & rear...

Going to spend a bit of money on the engine & box to get them as good as the thest of the car;)

Its 888 number 9 which I bought nearly 2 years ago with 1440 miles on the clock, its now in storage over winter & it has only covered 4200 miles so far!!! Recenly given it some TLC with Maguiars Clay & 3 stage cleaner/polish/wax system.

Should be on the road for the 2008 show season, won't be doing much to it for a while as our wedding is in June so need to concentrate on that first.
Will bring shell back from bodyshop & thoroughly waxoyl it and poss put a few bits on to get it as a rolling shell but thats it in the near future.
Once wedding is paid for I will concentrate on rebuilding it & spending some money on the engine, gearbox & diff.
Cant wait to drive it, hope it wont be a dissapointment as apart from a quick run round the block in a GSi recently I have not driven a Nova or Sport since Feb 2002!!!

there was a 108 replica cam on ebay not so long ago, went for silly money!! It was advertised as an identical replica of a sport 108, aswell as an airbox and a few minor other parts

Help, I am urgently in need of an early bonnet.
I need an early one which were fitted to mk1's upto about 87, you can identify them as there is no black plastic trim where bonnet stay goes in.
Let me know ASAP
Cheers
Rich

Mate I have a bonnet from a 1988 Mk1 - sent you a pm with some pics (doesn't have any trim where the stay goes in...)

Sure pm me back if you want it.

thats a VIC check :)

if his new shell has no chassis number, then its just a case of swapping the VIN plate and reg plates over, no DVLA interference needed ;)

Thats what I thought, its not been written off and put back on the road or reshelled into another car(Ringing?) so don't think it needs checking by DVLA unless anyone knows any different.
Just like replacing panels with new items, just its all of em!
If a bodyshop reshells a damaged car for an insurance company I dont think they have to inform the DVLA

Its not his bodyshop, he only does these as a favour and only gets time on a saturday to work on them. Not sure if he's still with VW but about a year or so ago he moved bodyshops.

I think its worth it, he was miles cheaper than aywhere else I had a quote from and he knows Novas.
I don't think the travelling is a problem for Keith as he is bringing it over to Dudley to get the shell dipped anyway so he is virtually driving right past him on the way back.

Nick, From what i remember Ade painted your car quite a few years ago when Nick Caros mum still owned it, and if i remember right he did'nt paint the whole car.. but not completely sure on that.. Can't remember if Dave did any paintwork on that one or not.

a few freinds of mine, there cars have passed VIC checks with no chassis number, and i take it that your shell has no chassis number either?

I would literally swap the vin plate and number plates over from old to new, and hey presto! if you have no "new" chassis number, then what can you tell the DVLA? Nothing, so why bother telling them at all lol ;)

Nick, main reason its going to Ade Culley is because its getting dipped and e-coated in dudley first. Plus i've seen his work on nick caros, martin kelsons and martin weavers novas, and they are the novas that continuely impress me with fantastic paint at the shows.

I had 3 quotes from top bodyshops here. The place that painted andysnovasport.co.uk wanted close to 3k, and another wanted 2.5k, just to paint a bare shell!!!

There probably are better painters out there, but i've not found them and decent money. I've had 2 full resprays now by what were so called professionals and both cost alot of money, so this time i'm taking no chances and going to somewhere i can trust.

Funniest thing happened yesterday. Went to local scrappy looking for a replacement bonnet & there sat outside the stores was an E plate saloon. It was untouched so asked the guy that worked there if it was a scrapper as it had keys in it & tax had ran out, he said yeah must be & drove it round the back for me. Another gut started ripping back seats out whilst I had a rifle through the boot & glovebox etc before unbolting the bonnet, as I was taking out the last bolt the guy ran through shouting to stop its a customers car!!!
Turned out an old boy had parked up while he went looking for a new grille for it & whilst I was stripping his car.lol
Quickly bolted it back up & they took it back round to him & he was none the wiser! Ooops!

Just seen this thread!!

 thats as perfect as you can get when it comes to a paint finish! glass!!

Ade's paintwork is awesome! :thumb:

He did my nova.. (everywhere except the roof and tailgate) and he gave my mums old GSi a full respray.. simply because it had pretty bad paint fade.. (the usual with red)

When Dave bought the car (3 or 4 years after Ade's paint?) he resprayed the rear 1/4 if i remember correctly..and a few other bits?? rear arches needed doing etc

When i picked up the car (from Ade) and for the duration of my mum owning it, the car was looked after by me and the paint work was flawless..

Ade comes highly recommened! :thumb:

Cheers

Right, I have neglected this thread and my car over the last 6 months, I have been continuing with is but at a very slow pace.
Decided to get my finger out and crack on to stand any sort of chance of getting it done for this show season.

So, here is a little update of what I have been upto over the last 6 months...

First of all I rustproofed it with 6 litres of Dinitrol which is a very expensive and better quality version of Waxoyl...

Then I made a start on the wiring loom...

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v305/NovaSport/CIMG0477.jpg

I dug out my electrical first aid kit

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v305/NovaSport/CIMG0476.jpg

Although it was in good condition I stripped the engine bay section, cleaned it up & carried out a couple of minor repairs. I fitted some new convolute tubing & got it ready to retape,

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v305/NovaSport/CIMG0474.jpg

Retaped the loom for the idle control unit...

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v305/NovaSport/CIMG0491.jpg

Then I had a little wiring loom issue!
It appears Vauxhall changed the sized of the hole in the bulkhead for the wiring loom at some point in the Mk1's life so when the loom was pulled through the grommet fell through with it http://www.justopelvauxhall.com/images/smilies/wacky/mad.gif
A bit gutting after spending a week cleaning & re-wrapping the loom!
The one on the left is the original and is 10mm smaller!!

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v305/NovaSport/CIMG0504.jpg

I managed to butcher a couple of looms at the local scrappie and got 2 in the correct size but then I had the problem of getting all of the engine section of the loom through the tiny holehttp://www.justopelvauxhall.com/images/smilies/MSN/032.gif
After a bit of head scratching I came up with a bright idea. I used a hoover extension tube and pushed it into the centre of the grommet to stretch it out to allow the loom to go through them pulled it out & cut it off when I had done. Worked really well!

Anyway, finally got the loom into the engine bay & grommet fits fine, thank f@@k!!

Yeah Dinitrol just wipes off with some white spirit the same as Waxoyl, also used some hard heat & acid resistant wax around the engine bay, this needs to be removed with thinners :s

Taped up bit is the wiring for fog lights, its on all standard looms.

Been buying again, picked up some decent RFX's off ChildsGTE.
Although they look a bit rough they are in very good condition, straight and not been rallied like most. Will refurb really well.

One of another set of five that I had refurbed a while back...

Dont see many of these, brand new chassis legs:D

Picked this little beauty up last November aswell, was well chuffed to get it

Unlucky mate, I searched high & low for this. I knew who used to have it but took a bit of tracking down. Apparently it originally came from the Droop Snoot Group.

WOW this project is awesome!! saw the start of it last year but completely forgot about it.

This is clearly going to be the nicest sport when its finished, I take it its only coming out in the 'decent' weather? Not that we get much of it though.

Fantastic progress. Not only is the shell to an awesome standard but so is the build up & you take good pictures to document it.

Crack on!

btw; is copper/nickel brake pipe a common thing?

Novasport
08-01-08, 10:02 PM
Yeah, its also known as Kunifer. Its a lot more sturdy than copper so produces better bends & its got a nicer finish.
Also it does not corrode afaik, I personally hate copper so it was either this or steel pipe but steel is a bitch to work with

There is not that much to do to be honest, most stuff is ready to be bolted on and I can strip and rebuild Novas with my eyes closed! Main problem is getting brake pipes done as its taking a few attempts to get each pipe right.
Engine is ready to be built so that will only take a few days and I just need a couple of bits powedercoating then its just assembly

Just trying to sort the engine at the mo.
AST2 cam is in, head is cleaned up & valves ground in, new piston rings are fitted & all new rebuild parts are waiting to go on including....
New genuine hydraulic lifters
New genuine Oil, water & fuel pumps
New genuine top & bottom gasket sets
New bottom end bearings & piston rings
New head bolts, manifold studs & nuts
New Kent AST2 camshaft kit
New Irmscher vernier pulley
Irmscher cam cover
New recon dizzy
Etc, etc...
Borrowed a decent honing tool so should sort that shortly so it can be completed.

Picked up another tasty item....

Prob best known as a Mk1 Astra GTE tool kit, they were actually an accessory for Sporty model Novas aswell.
Its brand new & unused.

I still get a deep down sick with jealousy feeling everytime i look at that shell lol

My collection of gm parts helps ease it though as you're not the only one with chassis rails! Also got both rear quarters and a complete front panel/crossmember. Just the rest of the car to find lol

Done a bit to the engine...

After stripping what turns out to be a VERY mint engine I thought I would give it a freshen up. Got a feeling it might have been a recon engine.

Acid cleaned the cylinder head

Looking good Rich. Are you going to leave the cylinder head / cam housing in bear alluminium? I tried a Alluminium VHT paint on mine, it looks great on application, however I can't see it being that durable, that matt finish doesn't like oil/grease/dirt etc. I may need to reconsider the finish.

Are you renewing the big-end, main shells too?

Dec

Novasport
23-02-08, 09:27 PM
Yeah, I am leaving it bare aluminium & hoping it does not corrode in a hurry.
This engine will only be in for a year or so until I build a better tuned engine with the spare I have.
I am not too keen on painted engines apart from block engine enamel as if it start to flake or peel off it looks horrendous.
I have new genuine main shells & big end bearings which will be going on.
The engine appears to be a recon/replacement unit as it was mint when it was stripped. All the items we have removed to replace look new and the water galleries are clean & rust free.
I just thought it may as well have a freshen up while it was stripped.
I have everything new to go on once built aswell inc, dizzy, breather, water & oil pumps, studs & nuts, etc. I even found a brand new Irmscher manifold I forgot I had in the loft:roll:

Clean, bare metal is definently best for heads/cam housings, looks so much better than painted.

krobinson

Good work Rich! Engine looks spot on!

I left mine in bare alloy and it wont corrode as long as you spray with some WD40 or silicone spray to seal it.

Engine is built, all suspension items etc are powdercoated ready to get it on its wheels. Just need to get gearbox sorted & one brake pipe made then I can get it together.
Currently painting my living room after a redecoration turned into a rebuild when I ended up stripping it back to brick!!!
Hopefully the lad will be coming to pick up the SR shortly so I can start clearing some space so I can work on it again.
