Ooo aye it will i think, as the shafts turn the diff, and the speedo ring then turns.
Whether in gear or not.

If I drove everywhere in a whine of reverse, will the mileage go down? I might have to try this to see, 10 laps of Halfords car park....

Of course it will. The speedo and mileage is mechanically driven from the crown wheel which will turn regarless of the gear selected or ignition being turned on/off.

The last post was about the first question. If you want the mileage to go down why don't you just take the clocks out and turn 'em back with a precision screwdriver. It's a lot cheaper.

Edit: And I don't think that works on a nova anyway. Apparantly it does on some older cars though.
