when fitting cav shifter where exactly do you drill the hole in the bulkkhead for it to pass through in to the bay ?

I kinda followed the Competition Build Manual, ended up having to make it slightly bigger but it'll give you something to go off.

Once the carpet centre section has been removed, an elongated hole, approximately 80mm x 25mm must be formed in the centre section of the floor panel, along its centre line, starting 80mm rearward of the tunnel to bulkhead bodyseam

The rod that comes off the Cally shifter if pretty much straight, conects up to the std Nova linkage.

TBH it doesnt really matter as long as you get it rougly right as most people cut and weld the shaft at an angle to suit. (unless you do it like the pic above which IMO is too low)
I had to cut a slightly big hole in mine because i did it a ****e way which was to angle the cage forward so the shaft points down to meet the connetor ie:

Does the cavvy shifter actually feel better than the nova one?

I've heard its no different,Lol.

When done well feels good. my 1st attempt felt a lill rough as the angles werent quite right. I will make it better for the new 'Merit 150'.
It gives a shorter throw and a closer feel. I also like the fact it i made it higher - gave a touring car feel, all controls were really close. however the main reason i did apart from experimentation was to free up the tunnel for the custom zorst for the XE.

Thats a good call, thats the main reason ill be doing it too, makes a nice route for a straight through system. Besides the manifold and the bend over the rear beam, there will be no bends!

rich would you be able to make a template of centre section of floor wih the hole cut out, just make it out of some old card ,an i ll give you some beer money for doing an pay postage ?

Once you've removed the centre bit that supports the carpet, you can just measure off the seam where the tunnel joins the bulkhead, i'll measure what size mines ended up at & let you know (probly tomorrow).
I just stuck some masking tape dowm and marked it out, then used a hole saw at either end then a grinder to make 2 slits to join the 2 holes.
Might differ slightly from car to car, probly best starting off with a smaller hole then making it bigger if the rod catches it at all.

sorry but mr drapers idea sounds way better...just replace the nackerd linkage and all rubbers etc then you get smooth as u like changes! nice.

reaplcing the rubbers will make it feel better, but it wont change the pivot action and the position of the stick, the custom cav system allows a lot more preferential positioning.

alternatively check flushes WIP thread here - http://forums.roybacer.net/index.php?showtopic=1797&st=80

i did the cav setup and rose jointed the WHOLE nova linkage. feels better but for the ballache setting up i probably wouldnt do it again lol. feesl tight though. next to get rose jointed will be the ball joint where the stick goes through the rod

direct is where its at :D but the cav shifter needs its pivot moving other wise its all in reverese.

the wip thread for gaysimon would be great if it didnt type like a spasticated 12 year old on a virus infected site lol

Most of the linkage bushes are no longer available through dealers.

Does the virus still come up? it should have been deleted, all current users arent having any problems.

im not even going to bother with RB, last time i tried i had to reboot my whole system !!

would it work better if i mounted the cav shifter a few inches further down the tunnel closer to the bulkhead ,that way it would be shorter still ?
i want to keep the carpet in mine it looks untidy without it has anyone done this

the lentgh of the "rod" from the shifter to the gearbox makes little to no odds. its the lever actions in the linkages etc that make it shorter

the rod on my cav shifter has a curve in it do you just cut the curved part so the rod is straight an weld it to the nova rod ?

yep.
see rob_lee's thread on MIG too, he's doing it at the mo, pics & al.

when you fit the shifter how far should the pipe in the engine bay go inside the pipe on end of the cav shifter,(its the knurled pipe on the end of the gear selector)
i can get it on about 10-15mm but it wont go any further when i fitted it i put the gear box in neutral an a screw driver through the hole in the shifter it went in about 15mm but i couldnt get it any further i tightened it up at that but it pulls itsself off should the full lentgh of the knurled pipe be inside the tube ?

R1CH

Think mines only in by 15 - 20 mm ? Yours should be ok tho, maybe just need to tighten it up a bit more ? could always lengthen the rod abit ? I had to alter mine a fair few times before it was right.

i used a quarter drive ratchet last time an tightened it fully it was dark ,i was using the crap 60w light in the garage an my phone to see will have another look in daylight
its deffo tight though i thought the obvous was it wasnt in far enough but it must be if yours is the same

can you use any cav shifter?

craig green
07-01-08, 05:29 PM
From a mk3. From a manual car ideally.

No idea if a smallblock (1400/1600) varies at all. Cant go wrimg with one from an SRi tbh. Plenty about.

loggyboy

As its custom you can pretty much use anything, cav, calibra, even mk3 astras had a similar but far from identical set up, that i cant see why it couldnt be adapted to fit.
