I have decided to finally start the install in my nova, as i transport my bike a lot and i always seem to carry tools with me i need to keep the back of the car as clear as possible, I dont have any back seats as it is but due to the situation i have decided not to have any big subs.

Now i will be using 2 amps in this system so i have decided that the best place to mount them will be behind the front seats where the rear passengers feet, this will keep them out of the way but will allow easy access for any work at a later date and keep them cool.

There will be front and rear speakers in the car but i havent really decidied on the location of the fronts yet, i am debating making some kickpods to go in the footwells for them, the rear speakers will be mounted in the 1/4 panels.

The main speakers will be 6x9's mounted in the floor where the rear seat bench normally is, i have decided to use these as they will give me the best range of sound and take up little space.

To be honest i havent really decided what equipment i will be using yet, I have the headunit and 6x9's, most of the system is still in the design phase, the one trick peice of hardware i have is a Pro-sound DR66 electronic crossover, its a 2 way crossover that will give me a good degree of control over the 6x9's so that i can fine tune them to give the sound that i am after.

With the amps as said i will be using 2, a 4 channel amp for the front and rear speakers and a 2 channel amp for the 6x9's.

Thats pretty much all i can say at the moment, i will upload pics of the bits i have so far and i will make some sort of wiring plan that i will put up aswell.

I'd definately try and keep it all one manufacturer as it looks a bit better. lol

I always love a good WIP thread.

Unfortunatly i will be using 4" sony speakers as i dont like the sound that the smaller JBL speakers give, they always sound a bit to tinny for my liking whereas the sony speakers have a crisper sound

If your after the best sound quality then mix and match mate.

I also need to do some work on my install.

Xbox has been taken apart and switch panel seperated. Still need to finish extending the wires for this. It will then be located just infront of the gear stick. I've brought some extension leads for the controllers too so they reach into the back seats. They'll be one screen up front and two in the back. :D

Could you not just use wireless controllers matt, u puttin xbox, or xbox 360 in?

Cuz my 360 has wireless controllers

It will be mixed and matched all over the shot lmao, i am using a combo of JBL and sony speakers, clarion headunit, prosound crossover but i dont know what amps yet.

My headunit is the retro looking mp3 pioneer one DEH something or other.
Pioneer 6x9's and some 13" that I've got kicking around.

As for wireless controllers.... the one I've got for the xbox in my house if paff. I could use wireless and it would be easier to a certain extent but the xbox will be hidden... the only bit on view will be the switch panel and the drive. Its all xbox I'm afraid... 360 is a bit over priced imo.

I Got discount on our 360, ordered it 3 months before release date, through my bro's mate (paid ?156.99 included 2xwireless controllers, 4 new games, all adaptors etc etc). The 360 is mainly my bro's, but i think i play it more than he does lol.

Sorry to go off topic

I kinda figured I'd just go for the xbox as I didnt wanna chop up a 360. Plus I've got loads of games.

Little bit of an update, i havent got any pics as yet because no real work has been done. I have bought all of the materials i need to replace all of the headunit wiring.

I need to run an idea by people that i have been thinking of though.

I want to hide the headunit in the car somewhere out of the way and install an Ipod into the drivers door card. the only way i can see it being done is with an FM transmitter that plugs into the Ipod and sends a signal to the headunit.

does anyone have any better ideas as really i dont want a headunit at all and just have the ipod but i dont think this can be done i think i need the headunit as a signal carrier.

If you fitted the headunit under the drivers seat, an ipod adapter cable might be long enough to run along the sill, up the pillar, into the door....

You'd have to get a head unit with a remote though.

Mr-G
04-10-06, 02:48 PM
well you can get an Ipod FM transmitter that you tune in to a particular frequency, you can then do it all wireless and the reception isnt affected as the 2 items are so close together

Matt2107

Go for it... sounds like a good idea to me.

I think you should stick your headunit under the seat or maybe on the front parcel shelf under the steering wheel would be better for access. You could front it off with some aluminium so that it cant be seen.

Mr-G
04-10-06, 04:03 PM
I think that sounds like a plan, i might put the headunit in the glovebox though just for ease of access, apparently with the transmitter you get the full function of the Ipod so i can control volume from it aswell.

How about moving the horn and fitting a real small ipod into the steering wheel centre?

It can be done!

Buy an ipod - AV lead from Comet/Currys etc the one with yellow, Red and white end on it. Run Straight into an amp. No headunit required.

how come your using an ipod? (sorry i detest ipods with a passion haha) jus thinkin if your doin a swish install (sounds phat so far!) then maybe a creative zen would be better? creatives play mp3s better and i think the difference is noticeable and also you could get the black one where the screen isnt visible until the player is switched on? if u mounted it into a blac or dark purple dash it would be virtually unnoticeable until you turn the ignition on! if i had the skill money or effort in me to do it i would! im lookin forward to seeing pics of this when its finished!

plus i need to get a few bodywork issues sorted before i install it all :thumb:

I might be wrong but there's probably more support available on the net using an ipod as its been done before.

if it really was crap technology, it never would have taken off and become the most used piece of kit in its field. Granted, the styling is alot of the reason for buying, but if it didnt work, it wouldnt have been successful, simple as that.

Using an ipod for such a purpose would be just as effective as any other device, just pick one to your budget and tastes. Whatever it is you use though, it needs to be easy to use - and afaik most independent reviews show that the ipod has a really simple interface compared to others.

Also - because the ipod is so popular, it is correct to assume that there are those out there who will have butchered and hacked it in every conceivable way - so if you need help on ripping it apart and adapting its use, there WILL be something online somewhere.

Exactly what I was trying to say... just better lol

I've used a creative zen and its not very user friendly. I also have a iRiver thing that holds around 8000 songs which is also the same.. a right pig to use.

I actually prefer my Creative Zen Touch over the Ipod I had, just personal preference. If you can see beyond a products aesthertics and see if it suits you then go with it.

The reason for using an ipod is because you can buy a ipod - RCA lead from comet for about ?15, there isnt any other that you can!

Well after a lot of thought and looking at various products i decided what i am doing. I am now the proud owner of a 2gb Ipod Nano.

I decided that 2gb is plently big enough for what i want. now all i need to do is find a place to mount it :wtf:
