When courtney do the 1600 8v turbo conversions has anyone any pics of the vacuum switch that they use or how to pipe it up to the engine or how it works?

cheers

It is run from a vac line off the inlet manifold after the TB. You can get the switch from RS electrical catalogue.

The 2 wires are wired into the TPS. Thats all I can tell you.

Thanks mate the switch was aready wired in the loom when i brought it but i didnt know if that was right and i didnt know what vac pipes went on it

Got any pics of what you are upto mate?

I sold my engine back in the summer after not running it for almost 3yrs. I really rate a blown 1.6 8v. Loadsa torque & very upsetting for RS turbos etc..LOL

That looks awesome mate.

How have you lowered your compression ratio?

Here was mine in its prime.

I assume the manifold is custom/one off? Who made it & what turbo is on it now?

Heres another impressive 1.6T.

Ive used the courtney spacer plate between two head gaskets is ok?
ive been told to run it on a standard loom with vacuum switch is this right.
someone said try standalone managment but ive never heard of this? what do you think.
why did get rid of the turbo? are they any good?

yes mainfold is one off made by a friend for ?500

this is the turbo im puting onhttp://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m89/Makwal/Picture006.jpg

So long as the boost is fairly modest (10psi max) the std Bosch injection & vac switch will be OK.
Head spacer is OK too, although I popped a couple headgaskets after I fitted some old injectors thinking they were low mileage.

Without knowing where the turbo is from I cant comment but the little T2 I had was very effective. No lag from 1300 rpm onwards.

Standalone management is aftermarket stuff that you tailor to your application & have mapped by an experienced rolling road operator (typically). You will se best results this way as the fuelling & ignition will be optimum throughout the rev range.

personally id go with aftermarket managment everytime for a "non" std engine like a turbo'd 1.6 8v as you can get FULL benefit of the turbo then rather than sort of adequate fuelling and spark that gives "good" gains, you can hav ethe ECU mapped to give "full" power etc.

green16v, that manifold is pure porn, i love it

craig green
12-09-06, 11:24 AM
I agree Stu, but it does work at 10psi+ & at 6psi (courtenay std pressure) it dosent have any trouble.

Management can add a couple thousand?'s to a conversion.

I was going for omex but have been told by someone 'standalone' where can i get this system and how much about?
craig are you saying i should either get some injectors cleaned or put some new ones in? ive heard of people putting XE injectors in is this after the they have standalone or can you place them in on standard managment?

craig green
12-09-06, 11:35 AM
XE injectors wont start with the Bosch management.

OMEX is standalone, as is Autronic & Emerald & MBE & DTA etc.

Theres loads of different stuff, best to buy whatever is recommended by your local mapper or whoever you choose to map it.

Standalone is mappable, basically.

edit; yes get the injectors cleaned.

the mainifold has been pressure tested so i know it will hold. As long as the car will start up and be able to run the car in on the standard managment with vacuum switch. then i'll get standalone and go from there.

do you need a two stage fuel pump? which is in the Mvaux kit? what else do courtney do in there conversions?

cheers for the help

craig green

Its a 2 stage fuel pressure regulator in the Mvaux kit.

This supposedly does the same as tricking the management with the vac switch. Its all about upping the fuelling.

Make sure you drop me a line when you return from Afghanistan. I really like the look of your project. If you need any help dont hesitate to PM me.

Ive dropped the car round my mates to try and finish or else i wont get it ready for the shows next year so i'll pass your details on to him. cheers for your help

Green16v
12-09-06, 01:11 PM
yes he runs his own company in the midlands doing anything to cars, ive seen him twin engine a ford fez, 4x4 escorts and cossie lump them, he will do what ever the customer wants he also does polishing and fabs anything you want. he fabed the cooler im running.

That turbo looks like a saab unit.

Im currently looking into doing this conversion myself, and am just collecting the parts

So far A Saab t25 turbo, courtney manifold and alloy intercooler
As for management i was going to be using emerald management with the parts that are needed to make it run.

As for lowering the compression ratio i will be using custom pistons hopefully with a ratio of 8:1, i did get some ally spacer plates made up, but i have decided against using them

got my mate to laser cut them http://www.scottishnovas.co.uk/random_images/DSC01515.JPG

Some interesting stuff on this thread :) Dont suppose anyone's already got a dxf file or similar cad file for either the spacer plate, or an exhaust manifold? I bought an mvaux exhaust manifold, but with my C16se being in a mini's engine bay it wont fit :( Hence gotta make my own - probably from 321 stainless.
Any one know what the inlet manifold is in that pic - guessing it was custom made, but if its standard from som'et else I could do with getting one :
http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c323/turbocraig/Craigypics/GTEt2.jpg

Just a thought about the Mvaux solution of the adjustable FPR - do I need to do anything regarding the MAP sensor also ?
Cheers,
Rich

Very neat on the lazer cutting so why havent you gone for the spacer plates? Yes i think its a saab turbo or could be a 200sx.
I heard the courtney mainfold was made from cast and it cracked easy thats why i havent had the courtney kit just the spacer plate and vacuum switch.
So where have you got this emerald man from? and how much? is it recomended?
cheers

bassaddict i can get you a custom mainfold made up like mine to fit yours if you want me to pass you his number on about ?500? and he maybe able to custom make you an inlet one aswell

Hi mate - cheers for the offer, but hoping it'll cost me quite a bit less than that for the manifold - I'm reckoning on about ?100 tops to get the two flanges lasercut, then about ?100 on 321 tube and bends and another ?100 - ?150 on labour to tig weld it all up - did find some mig wire that would do 321 but its only good to 450 degrees c :(

No-probs then if you get stuck drop us a line he wont drop below ?500 because of whats involed and that includes the polishing. his only down the M6 in walsall

heres the link to the emerald site http://www.emeraldm3d.com/em_m3dk.html

I have the courtnery cast manifold, im going to see how it does, then if it does crack i will get some made up.

Ive never been to sure on the 5th injector, i can see wheres its coming from, but just seems a bit of a bodge if u know what i mean.

Good project you got there looks a lot like my engine bay! I have a 1.6 8v Courtenay turbo conversion too! I like that manifold you got, I have a Courtenay one and it works fine but doesn?t look that good as its cast but I am thinking about changing mine too. keep up the good work!

craig green
14-09-06, 08:22 PM
Ive never heard of any stories about cracking. Ive had mine glowing red before now so I think its a myth. Tbh a lot of people like to slate Courtenay stuff nowadays probably because they cant afford anything..LOL

Just out of a matter of interest, do any of you guys have a image on where teh 5th injector sits? and also this pressure switch malarky

was wondering this my self cheeze very interested in this as i have a spare e16se lying about at the mo screaming "turbo me" "turbo me" lol

5th inj goes into the throttle body somewhere. You can bore a hole on a flat edge on te outside.

The vac/pressure micro switch can go anywhere. It has a small rubber hose from a vac line & has 2 wires that are wired into the TPS.

btw Cheeze. Why do you have 2 spacer plates & one gasket FS?

Green16v
26-09-06, 03:23 PM
Do you have to run a 5th injector?? because i'm not

Cheeze
26-09-06, 10:06 PM
it was just because a mate of mine was going to be doing the conversion also, but he pulled out so i just took both of them

Do you have to run a 5th injector?? because i'm not

Not essential with the Bosch L3.1 Jetronic.

You have to supply the extra fuel somehow though.
