bit of an odd one, but i'm in the process of building my road rally nova. the car will be used everyday, so all the parts added have to be road legal (as per the rules) and useable day to day.

i'm fitting key parts like guards, top mounts, quick rack, cgae etc.

but am also fitting fly off hand brake, electrical kill switch and push button start.

fitted front flaps and fire extinguisher, so then started on the kill switch and push button start. thanks to s_t_e yesterday, guys and bits from work and some fearless guess work, i wired up the push button switch. i've rewired the earth off the battery and run the kill switch inline from the positive of the battery. whilst in work today i pulled in a favour with a guy who made me a rear strut brace. and he did a sweet job.

what you think?

going to drill a hole in the handbrake to put a pin through to create the fly off handbrake.

That's a nice job. Sounds like your road rally car is really coming along. I wouldn't mind giving road rallies a go either. Is there anywhere on the net where I could find the regs or would I have to get in touch with the MSA?

If you know anyone that already has a race licence, ask them if you can have there "blue book" at the end of the year. The "blue book" contains all the rules and regs for all forms of motorsport in the uk and every licence holder is issued with a new issue when they re-new there licence.

Don't know if you have, or, are going to fit a fly off hand brake. But if you haven't, the cheapest and easiest way to do it is to stick a self tapper through the hand brake lever and into the release button while it's pressed in.
Just put the screw in when your competing and take it out when your not.

trust me your better off just fitting the pin thru it,the screw sounds like a decent idea but would look proper pikey if you ask me! what do you have to do for seat rails on a road rally car? do they have to be fixed or can you still you use tilt and slides still?

Hey road rally cars arent meant to look nice, theyre supposed to be functional. When you got entry fees to pay, the cheaper the better. I bet you cant get cheaper than my fly off handbrake!!! a 2p piece duck taped over the handbrake button. I have however invested in a hydraulic handbrake to be fitted over the winter, along with putting the fuel and brake lines inside the car. If you need any tips on the art of road rallying, get in contact

Just realised I have blue book, it's from 2004 when I used to compete in kart racing but from what I remember the regs never changed that much from year to year anyway.

We used to have a suplimentry Gold Book in karting with class specific regs. Is there a similar book for road rallying or is it all in the Blue Book?

The rules and regs for building a road rally car haven't really changed as far as I know. The only thing that has changed is the cars that are aloud to compete. Once you apply to enter a rally, you will get a set of regs that will list the specific rules for that rally.

As for DIY Valvers question, as far as I know you can use standard seats, infact you must still have rear seats in the car if it originally had them in.
They don't have to functional but they do have to be there.

thanks guys, may well be in touch tinyrally1...

going to fit the passenger harness this weekend, do the hand brake, fit a fire extinguisher, fit a map light ans sort the kill switch.

i wired it in, however i only wired it into the battery positive, works when the engine isn't running. but of course the alternator keeps the car running... do i need to run the live feed from the alternator into the switch in parralell with the battery feed?

i tried wiring it into the earth and the car still runs. i'm stumped.

thanks all.

also, anyone else got any good ideas for road rallying?
i have the nova grp a build manual. as soon as i can find a good shell, i will build it up and re shell mine.

mine is not mint being red its prone to the fading. will get a pick up of the outside and inside.

rexy, are you running a cage or any rally parts?

I wasnt no, It had coilovers and front and rear ARB's. Decent tyres and a fooked gearbox.

It had two front seats, a tool kit strapped to the back seats along with a jack and two spare wheels. A navi light and that was it...

We had an absolute blinding time, i've noticed when peeps want to do road rallys they always seem to spend loads of cages etc. Just get a car, learn to drive it quickly and safely and have some fun. Thats what its all about, just having fun.

there isnt really any need to spend uber ??? on cages, seats, etc etc etc.

One quote which was said to me when i first got into road rallies..

To finish first, First you must finish.

i know what you mean...

the problem i have, is that i will be using the car as my everyday car... so it needs to survive, thats why i'm fitting sump guard and fuel tank guard. as for the other bits their just to make life easier. although i feel i need a cage and harnesses after the result of my car crash in my previous nova... guy hit me at 60 and i was basicaly stationary... car was twisted and buckled to f**k.

where abouts do you do road rallies? i'm in south wales, most are run in south/west and west wales.

Well im In Plymouth, Devon and im hoping to do the ASWMC championship next year. On club 12 cars we have won 4, come second on one and organised one.

Car is a 1300 nova with blydenstein b+ head, Kent AST2 cam, and a 32/34 webber twin choke, safety devices cage, buckets, sump guard, Bilstein B8's.

The rules concerning road rallies changed considerably last year allowing tin cam engines to be retro fitted as long as they retain the original injection system (no twin carbs). Other that that you got to keep the back seats in and most of the interior trim, oh and not alter the silhouette of the car.

http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a282/TinyRally/nova1.jpg

Oviously the car isnt in road rally trim in the picture, but you get the general idea. It usually had some big Cibie Super Oscar spotlights.

If you have to spend money on a few areas 1) get the best possible spotlights you can afford, no crappy halfords ones 2) get the car to handle by fitting adjustable top mounts to get some decent camber 3) get a sump guard, tank guard (aint got one yet) and weld a plate on the bottom of the bottom arms to strengthen them

i've removed the front arb, have a quick rack on the way, as well as adjustable top mounts, fuel and sump guard.

spot lights are the next thing... how does you alternator cope running them??

car looks sweet btw :)

Cheers. It doesnt look anything special and ive tried to keep the bodywork as standard as possible, just in case i have an argument with a hedge or bank.

Yeah ive revoned the ARB as well, not really any need for it when youre running a 10mm sump guard.

Ive got a 90 amp alternator from a carlton (the one with aircon, electric windows etc etc) and it copes fine. It fits straight on.

Aint got a quick rack at the mo. I bought one second hand from Eurorallye a while ago and it was knackered, so i decided to get rid and save up for a new one. I would recommend getting the alloy brackets for the steering rack, or at the least the polyurethane steerig rack mounts from Deflex.

http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a282/TinyRally/IMG_4779.jpg

So what events are you planning to do then. I hear road rallying in Wales is like nothing else. Theyre all mad

chimp007_uk
12-09-06, 09:47 PM
going to get some poly mounts for the rack. i've even got the same wheels as you :) however, mine is a dingy faded red...

i am scared of rallying in wales... they are insane!!! scandinavian flicking it into a harpin off a mainish road with road going traffic driving along it...

they love their escorts. there's some serious money been spent on most of them... basically works spec and better.

with regards the alternator, will the nova one not handle any cibies? i was looking at 100w bulbs, and thinking it is going to fry...

will get a pick of my car up asap. i also need an exhaust system, i have a mongoose middle section, a janspeed manifold and a powerflow back box... not the best.

This thread is brilliant! :thumb:

Being Welsh and coming from a rallying background I've competed in motorsport for some time now but have always gone down the circuit route. After reading this I now have the inspiration to get my car prepped for rallying and do some 'proper' driving.

So big thanks to you guys for letting a welshman realise his destiny lol

chimp007_uk
12-09-06, 11:52 PM
good s**t!!!

to be a true welshman you have to be a lunatic and balls of steel...

i was bricking it, watching them pull off the stuff they were doing on a feb night at 4am... icy raods and fog...

so, be what you were born to be!

tinyrally1

That alternator should be ok, but i would probably ask the seller if the car it came off had aircon and electric windows/sunroof etc. THe more electric stuff it had from the factory, the bigger the alternator. THe original alternator would probably run the cibies, but you also got to think about the map Potti (no toilet jokes) nav light, tripmeter etc.

I havent been to any welsh road rallies but i organised the Plymouth Rally earlier this year and loads of welsh people came down to do it. I was quite scared that they may catch me up as i was running course opening.

I was up on Epynt the other weekend for the Mewla Rally and they have a road rally class. The commitment of those guys over the crests is just insane. Its a military firing range and they hold road rallies on part of the ranges, the roads are just the best, just a little far for me to travel

Looks good. Ive got all my switches and stuff in exactly the same place as you. I took my sunroof out as well. It s amazing how much a tilt and slide sunroof weighs. Ill try and get a few pictures of the inside of the car at the weekend. One of the things that made the car drive a lot better was a deep dish steering wheel and some suede OMP gloves. Im 6 ft 2 and had a bit of trouble with my leg between the gear stick and the steering wheel, but nowm its lovely. Not a very expensive mod but a very worthwhile one.

I should have been doing some bush work on the car at the weekend but they werent delivered to work today grrrrrrr. Deflex said they should be with me by the weekend. Oh well.

i'm 6'1" and i find that to get a comfortable grip on the steering wheel i have to have the seat too close to the pedals. bidding on a sparco deep dished steering wheel at the mo. its hard to find secondhand deep dish wheels. i'm going to leave the sunroof in for a while, can be a***d with the hassle.

no pic... lol

but yeh, she's an 89 f plate. bought her for ?300, have spent out a fair bit to get her ready for road rallying, but she's not the best. pics do make her look better than she is. faded paint is the main thing...

still, we'll see what she looks like after a thrashing down some welsh lanes lol

Nothing wrong with welsh lanes!! I've spent many a fine hour down them(for different reasons), living in Pembrokeshire!

I don't quite know what happened to the picture though????
