ok. ive decided to bring in some help with my car. a old vauxhall mechanic. my dad. mechanic and a highly trained welder. so ill keep this post updated with info.

1st job is the welding. it needs doing soon because its rotting like hell now. the engine bay needs livening up, then it needs some welding on the slam panel.

mk2 dash will be going in. the mk1 doesnt look to good nowerdays. some sr seats and the interior will be colour coded sr blue. it will be cept more or less original but it will be 20x better. the rear arches i noticed are in good shape for the cars age aswell. so thats a bonus

last night's progress...

fitted the new exhaust. looks ace i think
the rear lights what have been re-made to a higher quality.
the numberplate fixed
the new cd player put in
the engine bay cleaned abit
the new sr steering wheel (temp)

gave it a clean inside and out.
heres some progress pics
will update regularly

11-09-06, 05:19 PM
Fook me didnt realise it was that nasty! Dont worry mate mine used to look like that, as i said i used old victorian bed frame to replace the struts lol and some scrap 20 gauge all from the scrap yard + a dad who is a good welder and some under seal and some chemical metel what looks like ?400 odd of welding actually cost me next to nothing and it ended up flying though MOT so it reall isnt the end of the world!

Jack
11-09-06, 05:22 PM
Those rear lights are illegal, no reflector... Go euro :D

Adam
11-09-06, 05:31 PM

cars not looking too bad, but i can't help thinking your wasting your time, i'd rather have rotten arches then rotten rear chassis legs.

Dave.
11-09-06, 09:58 PM

12-09-06, 11:30 AM
Nice one Dave.
It looks like your getting really stuck in.

craig green
12-09-06, 11:38 AM
Love the exhaust hanger on page 1.

Keep up the hard work chap.

Dave.
12-09-06, 03:39 PM
ok i dont really want another 2 black eyes and a flat nose again so im in a pickle. a pickle onion sorta pickle.
i dont think the nova 1 is going to come off that easy. after looking at it today its still got the yellow blob of paint onit from the manufacturer. which shows it hasnt been removed. so i think its going to be a tight 1.
also ive started the meshed grill today. fixed the crappy wing mirror. (goodbye stikkie tape) and tackling the door locks what have had a screwdriver shoved in it by some scouse thief.
anyways ill get some pics for saturday at 5 or 6

o and im after advise on how to improve it. eg gsi kit alloys etc
and before any smart ars? says loose the redline sticker lights and seat covers. the redline stickers going on saturday. the lights are the only pair ive got after selling mine on ebay for ?5 and the seats are ripped and stained from what i think is... well... someones urine :P

so any good tips are greatfull.

o ye and ive bought a corgi model car of a nova to make a replica of mine. for the old shelf

Matt2107
12-09-06, 04:02 PM
I'd be inclined to try and pick up a set of vaux alloys... anything really, tigra five spokes, cav gsi or the SR/GTE/GSI 3 spokes.

If you sticking with the mk 1 look then go for GTE kit or if your going mk2 then it'll have to be GSI.

Maybe your next "mod" should be some gte/gsi side skirts.

Dave.
12-09-06, 04:06 PM
ive got some gsi 3 spokes on. thats a start
im after a gsi/gte mk1 grill. but there so hard to find. i think thatll smarten it up.

Matt2107
12-09-06, 04:08 PM
SR grills are the same too

Dave.
12-09-06, 04:14 PM
ok ive ordered some nl stickers from seymore. smarten it up abit.
what you think?

and matt i have just got a free sr spare wheel. new tyre and evrything. not even kerbd

Matt2107
12-09-06, 04:16 PM
Nice one Dave.

The novaload stickers are good for spreading the love.

Dave.
12-09-06, 04:18 PM
lol yeah. cant wait to get them.
ive got 3. so im muddled what to do with the other. but ill find a use. might put it above the windscreen mirror. itll look cool there

Matt2107
12-09-06, 04:33 PM
I think I might get some for the mondeo

Lee
12-09-06, 04:34 PM
The ole steering wheels are a bitch! Put the nut back on 1 or 2 turns, and then tap it with a hammer while someone else pulls. The nut stops you ruining the thread, and also stops the wheel flying off and breaking your snooter lol

Tap it though, dont beat it!

Dave.
12-09-06, 04:37 PM
so then how do i get it on?
if its a git to get off im guessing its a git to get on

Wilson
12-09-06, 05:53 PM

lol i was just thinking that 2 lol

stuartp
12-09-06, 07:59 PM
I remember putting a rachet strap around a roll cage to pull of a steering wheel with 2 very strong lads pulling it aswell! It was a 7.5tonne strap!!

They go back on really easy providing you dont bend that shaft!!

Dave.
12-09-06, 09:28 PM
ok im thinking of repairing the damage on the front. the slam pannel. but its been slammed harder than i thought. its bent the beam that holds it in place
whoops
any advice on this novaloaders?

Matt2107
13-09-06, 09:34 AM
New panel?

Dave.
13-09-06, 03:24 PM
just got my sri badge. it will be replacing the redline sticker.
cheers jim for donating it. i will carefully cut the i off so it says sr. then i will sstick it to the nova under the nova badge. i cant wait to see the outcome.

Matt2107
13-09-06, 03:26 PM
Take your time dave and make sure you get it straight.
Probably the easiest way is to take some time to get a strip of masking tape on the car in the right position then line the bottom of the badge up just a tiny bit above the strip of tape.

Dave.
13-09-06, 03:28 PM
yeah to make it dead straight.
cheers matt. will do.
ok. im loosing the yellow indicators and going for clear 1s. o and clear side repeters too.
the slam panel is too hard to replace. so after a smack with a sledge hammer today its back in shape. ill filler it and paint it.

Matt2107
13-09-06, 04:12 PM

so what do you all think?

Matt2107
18-09-06, 03:41 PM
Steering wheel looks really good mate. It'll make your nova look a bit more modern inside.

I like the badge too... what colour's your car again?

next step is to get some mesh. but ?29 from halfords is abit dear.
anyone know anywhere to get cheep mash

Jack
18-09-06, 03:49 PM
Ebay should have loads of it on, fairly cheap.

Dave.
18-09-06, 03:50 PM
no ebay account.
i need something to do my grill with. or a allready meshed grill

Matt2107
18-09-06, 03:52 PM
I think you can get some from B&Q a lot cheaper than that.
They sell aluminium sheeting in the same section. You can buy all sorts of colours i think.

You wanna get some fairly strong stuff although it will be difficult to bend but it'll stop pikeys from denting it inwards.

Its worth fixing it on with "no more nails" type glue.. go for the extra strength EVO stick version. This will last years if you but a load all the way round the inside of the grill.

Dave.
18-09-06, 03:54 PM
alliminium sheeting
whats that?
sorry im abit useless with b+q

Jack
18-09-06, 03:56 PM
Was going to suggest B&Q but didn't think they did the same type of mesh...

Try something like www.speeding.co.uk or www.dcp-shop.co.uk, their prices should be a little cheaper than halfords. Failing that, get an ebay account :p

Dave.
18-09-06, 03:57 PM
o and what is mesh considered as?
landscaping? because theres none on b&q website

Matt2107
18-09-06, 04:00 PM
They do some packs normally by the arty section where they have fire places and ****.

It should be in the same rack as aluminium sheeting that they do with all sorts of holes stamped out of it and in different colours.

Matt2107
18-09-06, 04:02 PM
Probably wont be listed on their web site.

Sometimes you can get it in motor accessory supply places that do spares as well.

Dave.
18-09-06, 04:16 PM

surely you have your own idea to what you want your own car too look like, look in the features section for some inspiration.

Dave.
23-09-06, 10:39 PM
ok. so today ive had the most progress of all days. i started with my nl stickers. one on the glove box, 2 in either rear side windows. 1 on the tailgate window and 1 above the drivers head on the front window. after that i set about a trip to the scrap yard. i got a dash clock, a cowling (steering lock cover) a new ignition lock all for free. when i was on my way out the scrap yard owner shouted " hey dave. theres a beemer (bmw) over there thats getting crushed. do you want any bits off it? ". i immediatley saw the m3 mirrors ( i know all nl'ers hate them lol) but for free i just had to snap them up. even if they didnt fit my nova. anyway i got back the garage and the clock didn't fit. great. the ignition lock went straight on and so did the cowling. after that i tidyed evrything up behing the dash using insulation tape and cable ties.. then i looked at the m3 mirrors. i modified the screw holes using some old pipe and a saw and file. in 20 mins hey presto. ok looking m3's. really pleased with the result then i whipped out my mew grill and stuck it on. then to finish off removed the seat belt holders (the little balck arms). however that didnt take me all day. for the rest of the day i was fighting with thr steering wheel. 3 hours of pulling really knackared me so i couldnt get it off. so old sr one on for now. so im after a steering wheel puller if anyone will lend me 1. i went to the nova at 1pm today and got back at 10pm tonight. so alot of hard work
anyway please leave your thoughts on the car. cheers
dave

Ok i'm lost, i respect what you are doing and its very good so far, but when i was a kid i was more into getting busy with the girls and getting drunk/high etc etc. have times changed that much that even the younger generation waste all their spare time sat infront of computers and waste money on cars they cant drive? (read as, on the road and cruising around)

Dont be offended, i'm just suprised lol :D

to get ya wheel off you dont have to pull it jus hit it either side with a rubber mallet and it jus pops off? then ya new one jus goes on?

Jack
24-09-06, 08:37 AM
thats a fake :S tbh. i made it on photoshop. just to put it on the truck thats all
no1 tell hehe
Thats got to be the single most pointless faked thing ever - the police never bother looking at a tax disk any more (only if you have or don't have one displayed), they check your reg plate on the DVLA database - on which the vehicle will come up as untaxed and you not only end up with a fine for driving an untaxed vehicle but also a severe bollocking for having a fake tax disk!! :wtf:

I had one of those tax disk holders though, you can get the disk in and out quite easily without undoing the screws lol

matt1chelski
24-09-06, 08:01 PM
When i got done on my bike, the police officer didnt even ask where my tax disc was! (in my wallet). He most probley already knew it was taxed before he got out the car.

I think thats the only place it'll be mate.

It looks as though my spare time will be spent desperately trying to get my younger brothers tigra alloys for his mk3 astra sprayed up in black before the Oxford meet.

Plus the whole car needs a t-cut.

Dave.
25-09-06, 04:09 PM
lol im 13 its sorn and tax disc is now burnt
as for the vin its not not there. its come back as red. so its been sprayed. so either im colourblind red or its been sprayed blue.
i think its aruba tho. looks liek it in halfords

So your doing all this work to a car you can't drive for 4 years?

Matt2107
25-09-06, 04:41 PM
Dedication is the word your after.... I'd of gived anything to spend 4 years working on my first car before I drove it.

Lucky Luke!
25-09-06, 04:44 PM
Not really, in 4 years time the car is gonna have a whole host of new problems........

I'm sorry but i just cant see the point. God how many times did i change my mind on things between 13 and 17? respect for doing it up but my advice would be to sell it, buy a nice skateboard or BMX and get back into cars when your old enough to enjoy the fruits of your labour!

Nova-Flair
25-09-06, 06:31 PM
Never mind respect for doing it up, repect for being able to buy the thing in the first place! how much do paper rounds pay these days? Are you some kind of youth pimp/drug dealer selling pritt stick to the younger bairns? i know i never had more than ?30 when i was 13!

seriously though you should try and focus on trying to get cheap SR/GTE/GSI bits for it instead of stickers etc

Dave.

yeah thats what im doing now
lookign at a gte kit
anyway its better than having a criminal record and 3 asbos on my ****. anyway if i want to work for the place i wanna i have to have a clean sheet.
anyways would you rather have some 13yr old lad smashing and bmxing on your nova or some 13yr old lad doing up a nova that 1 day will be the only thing left?

Lucky Luke!
25-09-06, 06:38 PM
Whatever way you look at, i very much doubt you'll end up driving it.

Dave.
25-09-06, 06:41 PM
bet i will luke. i meen a bit of hours welding and a skim of filler and abit of tdying up and itll be right as rain.
anyways. seen as its in a garage with all the tools around it that it needs to be fixed with id say im pretty set
and how hard is it to swap a red top? not thinking of doing it. its for a mate. hes got a corsa sxi

25-09-06, 07:01 PM

If you're going to do it, do it good. Is the Nova currently in dry storage? As said, be a shame to sort rust out now only for it to come back later on...

Dave.
28-09-06, 10:21 PM
yeah its on dry storage. anyway the donar cars getting stripped this week so im getting locks ignition and odd bits
anway ive just been sent a set of clear mk1 indicators for free from matt. so thatll make it look smart. and the sr grill im getting will look ace onit.

Dave.
30-09-06, 06:40 PM
ok its a saturday so its nova day
today the scrap man rang me to say that they had a little white 1.2 mk2 in for crash. so i shot down there. as i was about to walk out to go the toilet i see half the front of a pale blue mk1. thought i new it from somewhere. anyhoo i was having toruble getting the centre console out of the mk2 when some lad came up to me and said you off novaload? i said yes are you? he said yes whats your name. i said dave or xxxnovaxxx. he sed yeap thought you were. im REXY. then i twigged where id saw the car. its the blue saloon off here the pickup to be. he took me over too see it and it was a minter. he opened the bonnet and my eyes popped out my head. id never seen a 2.0 in a nova before. it looked awsome. couldnt believe that someone so close to me was a nl'er too. anyhoo he asked me to get him the heater blower out for him. so i did and i managed to get it for free.
anyway he came back to the house where the novas at and had a look round it. he even tried to get the steering whell off but even he found it hard.
anyway he went off in his nova. shook the whole estate down in the process. then i got stuck in with the work. not alot done today tho but i did fix the awfull grill. i replaced it with the standard 1 and secures a sr badge to it. and fitted the clear indicators. after that i fitted the centre console. fitted ok but not brilliant. then i removed the s****y wing mirrors and put the novas old 1's back on. then i tinted the side indicators.looked ace. overall a better days work.
heres some progress pics anyway
so what do you all think. better looking or worse?

hi everyone, havnt updated the thread in ages so hear goes..

i started out by getting a gsi horn push, and a set of gte clocks (thank's rexy)

then i fitted them, but i didnt thread the speedo cable to the left side this resulting in me forcing them in and cracking them. but the next week i was there i fixed the problem and they went in piece of cake :D

then i set about finding a sr grill, unpainted and with the sr badge, and lord behold rayond had one for sale, so i snapped it up pronto, it arrived this morning and i can tell you how pleased i am with it.
anyway heres some pics, going to update it during winter and will be working onit throught winter

just got my mk1 center console n thats it then

It'll split the plastic eventually.

yeah dont want the plastic to split, due to further inspection unluckly it has hit it dead on the chassie leg, this nocking it back haklf an inch, so that needs to be sorted. then im putting a sr bumper on to cover the damage plus i hate the thin mk1s, will update soon!!!
