Right, after reading Ade's project page i wanna start like a little advice thread!

My car needs welding in similar places to ade's and at the mo the lad i work with is gonna come and weld them. However! This takes time money and you don't always know what standard it will come out at.

The most annoying thing is that i have a welder, i have the space, i have the time and i have a car that needs welding................. i just don't know how.

I want people to leave there comments on welding for a child, i wanna know what you need, how to do it, preperation and people hints and tips to get good quality welds.

So peeps, post away, my cars welding is in your hands.

Fire extinguisher & someone to watch & help press & hold bits of metal in place. I think novices usually struggle with welder settings & not having enough hands.

Have you thought about doing an evening college course about welding? I'm looking into doing that myself so I can actually do some work on my nova.

Get some scrap steel about the same thickness as nova steel as the thickness effects the weld, play about with the speed of your movement and the feed of the rod until you're happy. Thats what I got told to do but I've not had a go myself yet.

Before I started my nova project which needed lots of welding I signed up for a welding course for beginners at my local further education college.

It was really handy because you get to practice lots and lots with the mig welder - I also got to have a go with gas welding (which is a lot easier than you would think) and also Tig welding (very hard to master).

It was a 10 week course - 3 hours a week and cost about ?30

Best thing I did to sort out my welding skills.

Pay your ?5 subscription and have that as your little picture... or retake it with less clothes and use that instead.

Sorry had to be said.

and back to the main questions...

you can buy books, videos and dvds on basic welding techniques - theres loads on google.

I research ed it and initially didnt buy a welder as I didnt think I;d need it enough to justify the cost - however if I intend keeping my Nova and based on the size of the project I've taken on, I'm intending getting one probably for christmas. Will help me patch up the nova in the future.

The main thing is practice - I'm keeping all the off cuts of metal from the my build so I can practice on different gauges.

get some mole grips or welders grips for holding sheets together and just dive in.

I'm thinking of getting the Frost's welding kit that was shown in last months Total Vaux.

Welder, chipping hammer, mask and some other **** for ?199.
